A distinguished figure in the pharmacy community, Dr. David Elm has made extraordinary contributions to the profession, dedicated himself to serving veterans, and left an enduring legacy through the creation of the C. David Elm Pharmacy Practice Scholarship.
David Elm embodies educational excellence and lifelong dedication, earning three degrees from the University of Colorado: a PhD in Pharmacy (1977), a Master of Science in Health Administration (1974), and a Master of Science in Pharmacy (1972) As a proud alumnus and steadfast supporter, he continues to champion the CU Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
Dr. Elm’s remarkable career spans decades, much of it spent as the manager of The Apothecary, a fullservice professional pharmacy on the CU Boulder campus. Known for his unwavering commitment to the profession, Dr. Elm has been a pillar of support for students and colleagues alike, offering invaluable guidance that has shaped the futures of countless pharmacy professionals His leadership at CU Pharmacy and his dedication to advancing pharmacy practice have made him a beloved and respected member of the CU community
One of Dr Elm’s most significant achievements is his heartfelt dedication to honoring and supporting veterans This passion is deeply personal, with both his son and grandson having served in the military His commitment to giving back to those who have sacrificed for their country inspired him to create the C David Elm Pharmacy Practice Scholarship Through this scholarship, Dr Elm is ensuring that veterans who have served their country will have the opportunity to continue their service this time, in the healthcare field.
Dr. Elm’s contributions extend far beyond his professional achievements. A 2013 graduate of the university’s PhD program in Pharmacoeconomics, Dr. William Padula has made transformative contributions to the field of health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), cementing his place as a leader in both academic and professional spheres.
Dr. Padula’s journey in health economics began with his groundbreaking doctoral thesis, *“Comparative Effectiveness of Quality Improvement Interventions for Pressure Ulcer Prevention,”* which laid the foundation for a career dedicated to improving healthcare systems through innovative research
methodologies and economic analysis. His work has been integral in shaping the future of healthcare delivery, particularly through his focus on cost-effectiveness analysis, a critical tool in today's healthcare landscape.
Currently a Professor of Pharmaceutical & Health Economics at the University of Southern California (USC), Dr. Padula is also a Fellow in the Schaeffer Center for Health Policy & Economics. His research contributions have expanded across numerous medical fields, including vaccines, oncology, surgical outcomes, cardiovascular health, neurology, and immunology, resulting in over 100 scientific publications that have provided pioneering insights. His ability to bridge data science with health economics has revolutionized the way medical cost-effectiveness is understood and applied in the real world.
In addition to his academic success, Dr. Padula has successfully applied his expertise in health economics to the pharmaceutical and medical device industries as Principal and Co-Founder of Stage Analytics. His innovative strategies have helped these industries implement cost-effective healthcare solutions, driving meaningful change in healthcare delivery on a global scale.
Dr. Padula’s visionary approach to health economics, coupled with his scholarly excellence and global leadership, makes him an outstanding recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award. His work not only advances the field of health economics but also ensures that patients around the world receive higherquality care.
A 2014 graduate, Dr. MacBrayne has been a shining example of excellence in the pharmacy profession, combining her passion for clinical care with a commitment to mentoring the next generation of pharmacists.
Dr. MacBrayne's path to success has been nothing short of remarkable. After earning her PharmD, she completed a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at Children’s Hospital Colorado and then pursued a prestigious two-year post-doctoral fellowship with the Colorado Antiviral Pharmacology Lab under the mentorship of Dr. Jennifer Kiser. These experiences laid the foundation for her specialized expertise in infectious diseases and antimicrobial stewardship.
In 2017, she became the Infectious Diseases and Antimicrobial Stewardship Clinical Pharmacist Specialist at Children’s Hospital Colorado. In this role, Dr. MacBrayne’s work resulted in numerous publications and national speaking engagements, and she earned the distinguished honor of serving as the sole pediatric pharmacy member on the NIH COVID-19 guideline panel. Her contributions during this challenging time made a lasting impact on pediatric healthcare.
Dr. MacBrayne’s leadership journey reached new heights in 2023 when she transitioned to Clinical Pharmacy Manager at Children’s Hospital Colorado-Network of Care. Her leadership is characterized by her deep commitment to mentoring, a skill she has honed throughout her career. As a leader, she inspires and guides her colleagues, sharing her knowledge and experience to cultivate growth and success within her team.
One of her proudest professional milestones came with the publication of her first manuscript, which focused on therapeutic drug monitoring levels of HIV medications in a patient post-gastric bypass surgery. This accomplishment, a collaboration with Dr. Kiser, remains a testament to her dedication to advancing the field of pharmacy.
For current and future pharmacy students, Dr. MacBrayne offers valuable advice: diversify your experiences, develop your soft skills, and seek mentors who can provide insight and guidance. Her career serves as proof that mentorship and seizing diverse opportunities are key to thriving in the pharmacy profession.
