MEMBERSHIP GUIDE 2016

WHAT AN EXCITING TIME TO BE A COLORADO BUFFALO! Loyal CU Supporters,

A

t this time last year, we asked you to help us take CU Athletics to the “Next Level.” You responded with unparalleled support, and many of you increased your giving to the Buff Club for the first time. Thank you!

Since we joined the Pac-12 Conference in 2011, momentum and enthusiasm regarding the future of CU Athletics has reached new heights, and the performance of our student-athletes across all sports has not disappointed! The motivations for our transition into the Conference of Champions were many, including an alumni base in the Pac-12 footprint more than three times as large as our former conference, enhanced academic and research alignment with peer institutions, and the fact that California is CU’s largest source of non-resident students. However, whether close to home or across the country, our most important stakeholder group will always be our loyal alumni, donors, and fans that contribute to the Buff Club each year. Buff Club members are the lifeblood of our operation, and we simply could not be successful without you. Much has changed in Boulder in the last year, but the work is not yet done. We are in the midst of the most transformational capital and endowment fundraising campaign CU Athletics has ever undertaken – the Sustainable Excellence Initiative (SEI). We are committed to building a foundation and providing the resources necessary for each of our athletic programs to reach the highest levels of success in the Pac-12 and nationally. Our goal is aspirational, yet achievable: $105 Million We must continue to build a robust network of philanthropic support and alumni engagement if we are to reach our full potential. Buffs everywhere must be aligned with us and share our vision for sustainable excellence. Anything less would be to fall short of our stated mission when we joined the Pac-12 Conference. Whether renewing your Buff Club membership or joining for the first time, we are asking you to partner with us by making a financial commitment today. Join us in this historic pursuit. Join us in the Drive for $105M!

RICK GEORGE, Director of Athletics Buff Club Donor

What’s new in 2016 T

he Buff Club is excited to share several new updates and benefits designed to make your membership experience more rewarding.

The 2016 Buff Club Membership Year runs from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016. This timeline coincides with the Athletic Department’s fiscal year. • This membership model is designed to provide donors the maximum amount of time to complete pledges and establish an annual membership level and priority ranking. The membership level and priority ranking you establish in one year drives the benefits you are eligible to receive in the following year. • In contrast to past seasons, in 2016 all donations, including football and basketball priority seating donations must be paid in full by June 15, 2016 in order to establish your priority ranking.

• Due to construction impact, football parking procedures for 2016 have not yet been finalized. Your priority ranking as of June 15, 2016 will determine your eligibility for football parking and we will communicate extensively as this process continues.

NEW BUFF CLUB BENEFITS!

W

e have publicly stated that we will operate in a fiscally responsible manner and achieve a significant improvement in our financial condition by 2016-17. One of the achievements of which we are most proud is the fact that we have had a balanced budget for the last two years. By focusing on operating efficiently and increasing revenues through well established and innovative initiatives, we are on a path to sustained financial stability. Fiscal responsibility is the new standard for CU Athletics, and we could not accomplish this without the generous support of our Buff Club donors. REVENUES

THE NEED: BUILD FOR THE FUTURE. DON’T FIX FOR TODAY

S

ince Rick George’s arrival in 2013, he has driven an unprecedented investment in the future of Colorado Athletics. At an estimated cost of $156 million, the Sustainable Excellence Initiative represents the most significant commitment to athletic facility enhancements in the CU’s history. Our vision of Sustainable Excellence is about transforming opportunity. In achieving this vision, each student-athlete that takes the field in black and gold will do so bolstered with the knowledge that they have every resource necessary to be successful. Inspired by the passion of our Buff Club donors, we believe that the resources we are investing today will lead to success for decades to come.

THE PROJECT: BUILDING SUSTAINABLE EXCELLENCE

T

hanks to the generosity of our donors, we have achieved incredible progress in the last year, but our work is not finished. When complete, the elements of the Sustainable Excellence Initiative will improve the student-athlete and fan experience with access to facilities and resources that will be second to none in the Pac-12 Conference.

DID YOU KNOW?

The National Buff Club Cabinet consists of 205 members spanning 20 states and the District of Columbia.

T

he National Buff Club Cabinet (NBCC) is an exclusive membership program for CU Athletics’ most generous annual supporters. Comprised of alumni, parents, friends, business and civic leaders, and even CU coaches and administrators contributing $10,000 or greater annually, NBCC members receive unique benefits and event invitations throughout the year. In appreciation for their impact on our pursuit of sustainable excellence, we host a weekend for NBCC members each football season to discuss the current state of our programs and future plans for CU Athletics.

Incredibly, members of the NBCC accounted for 70% of total giving to CU Athletics in 2014-15. In 2016, we are poised to build upon the generosity of this loyal segment of the CU family to advance our vision of becoming a premier intercollegiate athletics program. With the backing of our NBCC members, our ambitious goals are attainable, and we are on the path to unprecedented academic and athletic achievements. Consider becoming our newest NBCC member today!

SECURING THE FUTURE OF

COLORADO ATHLETICS

ENDOWMENT GIVING

E

ndowment giving provides an opportunity to establish a legacy of support for CU Athletics that will survive in perpetuity.

Endowments allow a donor to establish a fund in support of any CU athletic program. Each year, distributions from these endowed funds are used for a specific purpose, as defined by the donor. Endowments can provide support for scholarships, facilities, academics, or any other area about which the donor is passionate. Comprised of over 100 funds, CU Athletics’ endowment is currently valued at more than $15 million. While we are grateful for the contributions of so many loyal endowment donors, this figure is dramatically lower than many of our peers and competitors throughout the Pac-12 Conference and the nation.

Our ultimate goal is to build a much stronger pool of endowments, providing much-needed annual financial support. We must increase our focus on this vital source of revenue as we strive for Sustainable Excellence.

PLANNED GIVING

SCHOLARSHIP DONOR PROGRAM

S

tudent-athlete scholarships will always be among Colorado Athletics’ largest annual expenses. The Athletic Department spends over $10M each year to support the scholarships of over 300 student-athletes.

SENIOR, TRACK & FIELD

ABRIANA

TORRES

The Scholarship Donor Program is an initiative to secure resources specifically designated for these annual scholarship expenses. Being a Scholarship Donor is an exceptionally rewarding way to make a positive and lasting impact on the lives of our student-athletes. Scholarship Donors have the opportunity to build uniquely personal relationships with student-athletes, getting to know them outside of the field of competition. A commitment to the Scholarship Donor program begins at $10,000 per year. Five year commitments are preferred, providing an opportunity to remain paired with a student-athlete from the beginning of their career through graduation. Scholarship donors also receive many additional benefits, including invitations to exclusive events, a premium gift each year, and other experiences that are unique to our scholarship donors.

T

he Buff Club encourages donors to consider planned gift vehicles such as charitable trusts, gift annuities, bequests, life insurance policies, and other tax-wise tools. There is a planned gift option to suit nearly every circumstance, and each strategy has distinct benefits for you and CU Athletics. Please contact the Buff Club to learn more about planned gifts in support of CU student-athletes.

SUPPORTING ALL OF OUR ATHLETIC PROGRAMS The purchase of season tickets is a great way to support your favorite CU athletic program, but many of our programs do not sell season tickets. If you are passionate about supporting a specific program, please consider a contribution to our Student-Athlete Excellence Fund or the Golden Buffalo Scholarship Fund. A Buff Club representative would be delighted to visit with you about opportunities to support any of our outstanding programs.

Frequently Asked Questions QA

Who can join the Buff Club? All CU fans are encouraged to join the Buff Club.

QA

What is the minimum contribution to join the Buff Club? A donation of any amount qualifies you as a Buff Club member. Benefits of membership begin with gifts of $100. See page 10 for additional details on the benefits of Buff Club membership.

QA

Is my contribution to the Buff Club tax deductible?

Yes, the Internal Revenue Service allows a full deduction on contributions where there is no tangible or intangible benefit to the donor, otherwise an 80% deduction is allowed when the benefit is received. Contact your financial advisor for detailed information. Please note that contributions are non-refundable.

QA

How is my gift to the Buff Club used?

Your gift to the Buff Club is used for student-athlete scholarships, facilities, academic services and general operating budget needs of the athletics department. With over 300 student-athletes on campus, the role the Buff Club plays is essential to the success of the Colorado Buffaloes.

QA

Can I join the Buff Club if I don’t want season tickets?

Yes, the Buff Club is Colorado Athletics’ main source of private support. Being a Buff Club member at any level helps CU Athletics build sustainable excellence in strengthening its athletic programs and helps to drive CU’s stature as an elite national university. A successful athletic program needs funding to provide the resources critical to the success of its student-athletes. Annual gifts to the Buff Club are what make all of this possible.

QA

Why is my Buff Club donation due in full by June 15, 2016?

To maintain the department’s goal for fiscal responsibility, it is important that we can accurately project revenue for budgeting purposes. Additionally, meeting the deadline of June 15 is important to secure your seating and parking benefits for the upcoming season. Deadlines allow for the fair treatment of all Buff Club donors. If you do not meet the June 15 deadline, your seating and parking benefits will be subject to cancellation.

QA

Can I pay my Buff Club donation in installments?

Yes, you can make monthly payments toward your Buff Club pledge. Equal monthly payments can be charged to your credit card. All donations must be paid in full by June 15. Please contact a Buff Club representative to discuss payment plan options.

QA

Can I transfer priority points, tickets, or parking?

Tickets can be transferred and the Buff Club would be pleased to discuss this process with you. Unfortunately, priority points and parking cannot be transferred, as these benefits are uniquely associated with each individual donor.

QA

How do I improve my Priority Rank?

Because priority rank is based first on your annual giving level as of June 15, you should first consider increasing your level of support to the next membership level (for example, from Varsity to Coaches). If you are unable to move to the next level, you can improve your priority point ranking within your current membership level. This can be done by making an excellence gift above and beyond any required season ticket contributions. You should also consider adding season tickets. Please contact a Buff Club representative to discuss the best strategy to improve your priority rank.
