Proposal for “House of Architects”, headquarters for OAR, Dobrogea affiliation Constanta 2013 Competition entry
The goal of this competition was revitalizing an abandoned building which was erected in the 20’s and somehow managed to survive the changes that happened in the urban structure of the city- the demolition of old houses, replaced by stereotypical blocks of flats. Taking a look at the site plan it is easy to see the discrepancies between the two types of urban tissue, the small plots with buildings fragmented by courts and yards, against the massive buildings, symmetrically arranged, lining the street fronts. The building proposed for the intervention has remained alienated in its initial context, guarded by massive blocks of flats, very picturesque in its isolated beauty. In order to accomodate all the functions that were necessary for the headquarters of O.A.R. Dobrogea, some extra spaces needed to be added. We wanted to keep as much as possible from the original building, taking advantage of its fragmented layout. Rather than engulfing the old building into a new, massive volume, we opted for an assembly of intertwined parts, hosting different activities and programs, while permitting the development of public space around them. competition entry / team with arh. Residential Ovidiu, Siutghiol Lake, Constanta 2013 Under construction
The existing plot offers a great view of the Siutghiol lake and that factor was very important to the development of the project. Thus, the living area is situated at the rear part of the building and opens up to the lake through a glass wall. The front part, that is adjacent to the street, is protected by a metallic perforated screen, which shields from the sun and offers privacy to the user. The volume is quite compact, with balconies that distinct themselves as white boxes attached to the body of the main building, emphasizing the viewing points, the connection between building and landscape. archit_bia / arh. PROPOSAL FOR DINING AREA
STAIRS AND LIVING AREA
The designing of the interior space had to take into consideration the beautiful surroundings of the plot and open up to the view of the lake. The concept evolved from a two story livingroom to an open floor that reunites the dining area, lounge and recreational area into one open zone with flowing access. The modern fireplace shapes the space with its horizontal lines and creates a focus point that can be seen from every corner of the living area. The minimal furniture and materials used emphasize the quiet beauty of the natural environment.

marked area proposed for reconversion
Situated in the center of Mangalia, this building was designed in the ‘60s using the distinctive features of the period. Its initial purpose was to accommodate the Post Office. Recently, the Municipality decided to transform more than half of the ground floor into a public library that would benefit children and the youth, as well as seniors. The intervention on the main facade had to be kept in the same parameters as the building, but still accentuate the public character of the reconversion.
Our proposal for the exterior consists in extending the interior space with a sheltered terrace, which is conceived as an open, comfortable meeting place.

The height of the ceiling allowed the insertion of a split level, needed to accommodate all of the new functions. The initial plan had to be slightly altered, in order to create a larger reading area and a separation between public and auxiliary space, used for storage and personnel access. It was important to also include a cafĂŠ, which had to be connected with the terrace. The main aspects that were considered are functionality, durability and price. Within a low budget, the feel of the interior had to be kept modern, comfortable and public friendly.

View of the lake promenade
The municipality of Mangalia wanted to present a project of landscape remodeling in order to convince local investors, owners of small and medium businesses situated in the resorts nearby, to invest in the longterm development of the place. The idea was that, by upgrading the public space, creating promenades that would enhance the beauty of the natural environment, more and more tourists would be attracted to come and spend their money while enjoying the public amenities provided. The area to be considered is located between the beach and the lake system that spreads for several kilometers along the costal area. While the beach is intensively used especially in the summer, the lakes and their surroundings are not properly equipt and left abandoned all year long. Another important aspect was to regulate the way investors build and redecorate the existing buildings in order to maintain a certain degree of unity in the local architecture. In order to achieve this, specific materials were suggested for using. Textures and materials used for enhancing the natural environment - basalt, white gravel, wood flakes, wooden deck, white plaster walls, reeds roofing and fences
Detail of the promenade surrounding the lakes

The proposal intents to create a continuous promenade along the lakes, with different types of spaces to contain various activities. Fishing, swimming and sunbathing, playgrounds, skate parks and other sports can all take place in this improved scenario. While pedestrians find more ways to enjoy walking around the resort, the interaction with cafes , restaurants and clubs would also increase and the local businesses would bloom, thus making the initial investment profitable for both tourists and businessmen.

“Lentiarion” Visitors Center Constanta, Mosaic Museum 2012 Diploma project
Ÿ An archaeological site is often
misjudged as a vacuum, scarring the urban skin. The goal of this proposal is to become a link between different worlds that sometimes collide in the same place. Ÿ The vestiges of the ancient thermae are outlined through the sandblasted glass facades that provide sufficient light while blurring the outside world. Ÿ The gesture of descending in order to acces the exhibition area stands as a symbol for every archaeological discovery that starts with the hard work of digging up the mystery. The interior space narrows down to accentuate passages or opens up according to functional needs creating a dynamic experience. Ÿ Translucent concrete replenishes the wall of the old storehouse, giving the foyer an eerie atmosphere. Controlling light and visual connections enhances this ambiance, throughout the exhibitions visitors see only what lies in front of them. The lighting is mostly zenithal. Ÿ The public lounging area is the only exception from this rule. Situated at the upper part of the building, it opens up to embrace the harbor, while still preserving a visual connection with the vestiges. Furthermore, the tip rises above street level, becoming an extension of the public space, a promenade with a perfect view of the Black Sea. diploma_project

Ÿ Almost 2000 years ago, Tomis was a flourishing settlement that was developing
fast, mostly because of its strong connection with the Black Sea. The social and commercial activities took place along the coast, in majestic edifices built by leveling the slope of the shore. Nowadays, evidence of the past are visible in any part of the peninsular area of Constanta, blending between newer ruins and modern buildings. Ÿ Along with the Mosaic Edifice (where the trading took place), the so called “roman thermae” is one of the most important remains of those ancient times, although its purpose could not yet be established. Archaeological digs discovered the word “Lentiarion” inscribed above one of the stone portals of the building. The meaning of this Latin word lead the archaeologists to assume that its initial function had something to do with linen sheets. Other facilities such as water piping under the marble floor and the double wall that enhanced the ventilation of the sapce suggested that the building could have been used as a public bath or maybe a workshop for linen processing. Ÿ The poetics of the ancient significance of the space, with its morphology twisted by the passing of time, has become a fundamental reference point and an essential conceptual element of the project. Though the architectural gesture of the waft of the covering as a metaphor for canvases turned to stone, the proposal tries to regenerate the lost spirit of the place and restore its profoundly social atmosphere.

Ÿ The starting point for this

project was the urban and social context of the given site, the old “Antrepozite” building assembly. Its architecture, although remarkable for its time, lies abandoned between the degradation of the fragmented urban tissue and the social decay of the vicinities. Ÿ Trying to glue up what is left of the buildings, the proposal combines function with public space, in order to reanimate what was once a welcoming neighborhood. Ÿ The program chosen is a cultural one, a center for promoting science in a more engaging fashion, with interactive spaces and unusual exhibitions, where visitors can experiment and discover science in a different way. Ÿ The four branches of natural science, biology, chemistry, physics and astronomy are contained in four distinctive boxes, rising above the ground, overlapping in the specific order given by their attraction to earth.
