TURTLE LAKE EXPO (exo) SKELETON FLOOR 101 (ASPLUND) DRAWINGS AND STUDIES

FRAGMENTED AFFILIATION is a mixed use project(200 000m²), placed in Istambul (next to the Sapphire Tower),in the financial district (Levent). The site is marked by its problematic surrounding, represented by a Highway oriented toward the facade, in the opposite side there is a huge, dense and highly fragmented neighborhood developed on a small slope and with no urbanistic logic,no grid and no regulations. On the other remaining parts, the building is flanked by a “belt” of highrises, also with a very sporadic placement. Our proposal( Vlad Cuc,Gregor Schindler,Larissa Kondina,Mihailo Belsoevac) was a small scale version of Istambul. In stead of giving out building a mesianic role, as the one building that will solve all the urbanistic problems of the region, we agreed on treating the problem in a more profound way, with an inclination towards the social problems that Istambul is posing, especially in the Levent region. Taking this in consideration we created a fragmented mass that breaks from the conventional tower organization, creating a complex, more accessible circulation that connects the 3 main blocks(with their own dominant program).Instead of using a visible formal tranition between the belt of towers and the dense and fragmented houses, we replicated the unique associations between the atypical problems created by the region. The unussual proximity between privat and public was materialized(into the building) in the nearness between the interlocking volumes with no related, mostly opposite program(creating moments like in the 1954 “Rear Window” by Alfred Hitchcock) Another result of the interlocking “L” shape masses create one open void, penetrated by multiple terraces. Also, most of the openings are oriented towards this void in such a way that it would be possible to indentify the different programs and abnormal visual nearness from almost anywhere inside the building or terraces.

MODEL

TURTLE is pavilion made by a group of four students from industrial design and architecture. The entire structure was generatel using mostly grasshopper, with Rhinoceros 3D as part of the Digital Design and Fabrication class led by Mag.arch.MArch (Harvard) Andrei Gheorghe. The modules are the key element of the project.Every module is made from one plane sheet of cardboard, which slightly folded gives a rigid component characterized by its double curvature. Different deformed grids were tested for the overall shape(with karamba),but the most stable ome was a regular one, because the module could not support a big deformation without losing its rigidity. The regular grid was then applid to a arch based shape combined with a double surface, giving the pavilion enough resistance to be a selfsustained structure.

This project was made in my highschool senior year.(2010) The perspective drawing(on the left) was made in 6 hours, the model was dore in 3 days. Also, the project had a 30 pages theoretical part ,and some plans (similar to the one at page 16) With this suite of work i obtained my professional diploma as a draftsman in architecture.

(eXo)SKELETON

(exo)Skeleton is the result of a small study over the modalities of moving a specific weight (in this case 2-5 kg),in a new kind of “bag” .The conventional way of carrying object(s) trough backpack or purses was not taken in consideration. The intentin was to have a new “bag” that looks as a part of the body and has some extra unique features. The response was an exoskeleton (working on one existing technology developed by Honda), modifying it(in a formal way) so it can become a long distance travelling mechanism. The skeleton gives the legs some extra strenght and do not disconfort the back as much as a conventional backpack.

Floor 101 is an exercise that is used as a tool for learning how to cerate spaces, create a balanced circulation with different flows of people by using just changes in floor heights. This particular exercise was used to create a “library of movements, spaces and manipulation trough ramps and stairs.

The floorplan that resulted is composed out of two paths that flanks a third path,in the middle. That third path,is the most active part of the floor plan, managing most of the level changes, and creates the most dinamic spaces in the entire volume, contrasting with the more flat/monotone two surrounding paths. These paths are continuous mostly composed out ramps, that are creating spaces in stead of connecting them(how are used conventionally). Also, handrails play one important role in the creating and classifying the spaces. They evolve from solid 1m high platforms (that also have theire roles as inhabitable platforms/spaces) to faceted surfaces to translucent handrails that are used for amplifying dramatic spaces. The solid handrails(platforms) are placed on the more discrete paths, restricting the vertical movement through units of 1m. In order to have a realistic and easy to aply program ,the floorplan is divided in 50% flat horizontal space,30% accupiable ramps , and the rest of 20%, aesthetic geometry used mostly for transition between floors.

FLOOR 101

This sum of movements, ways of creating spaces alongside the importance of the ramps and the transition from platforms to handrails are right now applied to the my current studio project, which is the extension to the Asplund Library in Stockholm,a recent competition.

* this studies can be divided in two categories -drawings of volumes/buildings made after my own concepts and ideas -drawings of existing volumes.traditional buildings/structures specific to Northern and Southern Romania (on the last page) ALL drawings were made in maximum 6 hours, including the concept and volume * the drawings were made between 2009-2010 (including the Pland to the right)
