May 14, 2022 Dear Graduate: One of the greatest honors for the University of Colorado Board of Regents, the institution’s governing board, is to be part of this commencement ceremony. Your success is a success for us all. Your degree is a measure not only of an accomplishment of dedication and talent, but also notice to the world that you have the skill and discipline to contribute greatly to any endeavor you pursue. This commencement ceremony, like every University of Colorado graduation since 1935, will close with the reading of the Norlin Charge. As originally expressed by former CU President George Norlin in 1935, graduation “marks your initiation in the fullest sense of the fellowship of the University, as bearers of her torch, as centers of her influence, and as promoters of her spirit.” Welcome to the ranks of CU’s alumni family, which is over 475,000 strong. Congratulations on achieving this milestone. Well done and well earned! Sincerely, The Regents of the University of Colorado

COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER _____________________________ Thomas Evans, a.k.a. Detour Thomas Evans, a.k.a. Detour, is an all-around creative specializing in large scale public art, interactive visuals, portraiture, immersive spaces, and creative directing. His focus is to create work where art and innovation meet. A born collaborator and “military brat,” Detour pulls from every conceivable experience that shapes his landscapes and perspectives. Explaining Detour’s work is no easy task, as ongoing experimentations in visual art, music, and interactive technologies have his practice continually expanding. With his everevolving approach to art, Detour’s focus is on expanding customary views of creativity and challenging fine-art paradigms by mixing traditional mediums with new approaches—all the while opening up the creative process from that of a singular artist, to one that thrives on multi-layered collaboration and viewer participation.

HONORARY DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS 2021 ____________________________________________ Lauren Y. Casteel Born in Nebraska and raised in New Rochelle, New York, Lauren Y. Casteel is the daughter of renowned Civil Rights leader Whitney Moore Young Jr. and educator and author Margaret Buckner Young. After graduating from the University of Colorado Denver in 1977 with a BA in speech and communications with a minor in English Literature, she was appointed by Denver mayor Federico Peña to develop and implement proactive communications strategies to support his public policy. Lauren has shown a life-long commitment to social justice in all forms. She is a passionate advocate for a more humane world, with a focus on the most vulnerable members of our society—women, children, and the underserved. With more than two decades of philanthropic leadership experience, Lauren has many “firsts” to her name. Most notably, she is the first person in Colorado to lead three foundations—the Hunt Alternatives Fund; the Temple Hoyne Buelle Foundation; and currently, the Woman’s Foundation of Colorado. As a member of the senior leadership team at the Denver Foundation, Lauren launched the Inclusiveness Project, which has become a model for encouraging and training nonprofit boards to increase the diversity of their membership. The Project received the National Council on Foundations’ Critical Impact Award in 2009. During her time at the Denver Foundation, Lauren also instituted the Foundation’s Nonprofit Internship Program, which creates opportunities for college students to intern at nonprofit organizations. Currently, Lauren is the President and CEO of the Women’s Foundation of Colorado, where she brings her passion and intellect to bear in driving the Foundation’s research agenda, community partnerships and lobbying efforts. With her trademark asset-based approach to leadership, all parties’ voices and strengths are listened to, respected, and projected for outcomes that benefit women and families of every background and identity. Her data-driven and nonpartisan approach to policy has made Lauren and the Foundation trusted voices and leading advocates in the State of Colorado. Since 1987, the Foundation and its public partners have helped pass more than 50 measures in Colorado, and its list of accomplishments include greater access to high-quality childcare, minimum wage increase, elimination of barriers to pay equity and gender pay gap, and greater access to long-acting reversible contraception for low-income women. In 2014 Lauren was inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame. In 2015 she was named one of the 25 Most Powerful Women in Colorado by the Women’s Chamber of Commerce. She was presented the Mayor’s Monte Pascoe Civic Leadership Award in 2016, and in 2018 she received the Anti-Defamation League Mountain States Region’s Civil Rights Award. Given Lauren’s extraordinary achievements in philanthropic leadership, her life-long dedication to social justice and equity, and her exemplary public service, it is with deepest gratitude that the Regents of the University of Colorado award Lauren Y. Casteel the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

HONORARY DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS 2022 ____________________________________________ Don Johnson Through his extraordinary leadership, service, and philanthropy, Don Johnson has made a transformative impact on the University of Colorado. Don is third in a lineage of five generations of CU graduates and students. After receiving his B.F.A. in interior architecture from CU Boulder in 1962, Don made significant contributions to the fields of architecture and urban planning. In 1972, he founded Aegina Associates, a major architecture and planning firm. In 1993, he began designing and building Erie Village, which would become one of the most desirable real estate developments in Boulder County. Today, Don serves as Managing Trustee of the Dr. C. W. Bixler Family Foundation, which supports educational, arts, and community initiatives in Colorado and across the U.S. The Foundation commemorates and continues the legacy of Don’s grandfather Dr. Clarence W. Bixler, who graduated from CU’s School of Medicine in 1907. Through Don’s role at the Bixler Family Foundation and through his personal philanthropy, he has made a wide-reaching impact across the University of Colorado. He served as a Trustee of the University of Colorado Foundation from 2010-2016 and is a member of the Benson Society and Heritage Society in recognition of his incredible generosity to the university. Don has made an especially significant impact on CU Denver’s College of Architecture and Planning (CAP), where his philanthropic gifts have made him the largest donor in CU Denver’s history and where he provides ongoing thought leadership as a member of the CAP Advisory Board. Don’s investments in CAP reflect his fundamental goal of expanding access to learning experiences that can transform students’ lives and careers. First, he saw an opportunity for international learning and cross-cultural knowledge sharing. The result was the Bixler Global Initiatives, an exchange program between CAP and architecture schools in Finland, Japan, and Spain. Next, he saw the need to widen the reach of experiential learning opportunities, inviting more students to apply design principles to real-world problems. The result was the Colorado Building Workshop, where students learn the practical application of architectural theory by constructing buildings for communities in need. In addition to these unparalleled gifts to CU Denver, Don and the Bixler Family Foundation have invested deeply in arts education at CU Boulder through gifts to the College of Music and the Department of Art and Art History. Don and the Foundation have also made generous gifts to the CU Anschutz Medical Campus to advance care in breast cancer and pulmonary disease. For his visionary role in redefining student experiences at CAP and for his generous support of student success, research, and creative activity across the University of Colorado system, it is with deepest gratitude that the Regents of the University of Colorado award Don Johnson the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

HONORARY DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS 2022 ____________________________________________ Tenzing Rigdol Born in Kathmandu, Tenzing Rigdol is the son of Tibetan parents who were refugees in Nepal. Tenzing was brought up with a foundation in a number of traditional Tibetan arts. Ultimately, he came to the University of Colorado Denver, where he received his bachelor’s of fine arts in painting and bachelor’s in art history. Since then, Tenzing has emerged as one of the leading global contemporary artists to address political and ideological issues coming out of the Himalayan tradition. His artwork reflects the history of the Tibetan diaspora. Not only does Tenzing advocate values important to displaced Tibetan communities and Nepal, he has also been able to share the complexities of Himalayan tradition with audiences that are unfamiliar with the culture. In 2011, Tenzing transported 20 tons of soil from Tibet through Nepal to neighboring India at great peril, so that exiled Tibetans could walk on the soil of their homeland. The installation, entitled “Our Land, Our People” was blessed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and allowed his people to reconnect with a piece of their homeland. The journey to smuggle the Tibetan soil across three borders is documented in “Bringing Tibet Home,” a documentary that was awarded the Young European Jury Award at the 27th edition of the International Festival of Audiovisual Programmes. Since his first solo exhibition at the CU Denver’s Emmanuel Gallery, Tenzing’s work has been on show at some of the most prestigious art museums and institutions around the world. In 2014, Tenzing became one of only two contemporary Tibetan artists to be included in the exhibition, “Tibet and India: New Beginnings” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. His work, “Pin Drop Silence,” is now part of the MET’s permanent collection. Tenzing is the first Tibetan artist whose work has been acquired as part of the MET’s permanent collection, which contains over 2 million works representing the great masters of art to the very best examples of historical antiquity from the world over. Most of the proceeds from sale of Tenzing’s artwork goes to fund an artist’s residency he founded in Dharmshala, India. This residency supports Tibetan artists in their poetry, visual art and writing endeavors, with particular focus on disadvantaged Himalayan artists. Tenzing is also a brilliant public speaker and poet, regularly speaking on issues important to the Tibetan diaspora. Of note are public conversations at the MET which included eminent scholars of Buddhist studies: Elliot Sperling and Donald Lopez. In conjunction with solo exhibition, “My World is in Your Blind Spot,” Tenzing also gave the prestigious Logan Lecture at the Denver Art Museum. Tenzing is CU Denver's most celebrated visual artist, and his work will continue to resonate throughout our communities, the state of Colorado, and far beyond. Considering all that Tenzing has done for Tibetan art, issues of the Tibetan diaspora, and what he has brought to this university, it is with deepest gratitude that the Regents of the University of Colorado award Tenzing Rigdol the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

UNIVERSITY MEDAL 2021 ____________________________________________ Rick Gardner As a pioneer in the field of cognitive psychology, a dedicated champion for students and faculty, and a revered leader who shaped CU Denver’s Department of Psychology into its modern form, Dr. Rick Gardner has left a lasting legacy at the University of Colorado Denver. After earning his PhD in experimental psychology from the University of Nevada, Reno, Rick set out on a career that would span more than 50 years. He began at the University of Southern Colorado as professor of psychology for over two decades, advancing to chair of his deparment. In 1991, he joined CU Denver’s faculty as the standout candidate to lead the Department of Psychology. He served as chair for 11 years, growing the department’s faculty and improving its culture significantly before assuming his current role as professor emeritus. Over the course of his career, Rick published 67 journal articles, 7 book chapters, and 3 books, and he secured significant NIH funding to support his research. He became a leading expert in the study of body image and its links to eating disorders. Students and colleagues knew him as an excellent classroom instructor, combining the rigor of experimental psychology with a practical approach that applied scientific findings to real-world contexts. He also wrote a book, “Psychology Applied to Everyday Life,” and developed a course by the same name at CU Denver. Rick also used his personal experience of loss to give back to the research community and those impacted by Alzheimer’s. Following his wife’s, Betty Ann’s, passing after a long battle with the disease, Rick wrote “Journey Through Alzheimer’s,” recounting his experience alongside his wife interspesed with lessons from psychology about the disease process and symptoms. As graduate students, both Rick and Betty Ann benefited from financial assistance, which inspired them to pay it forward to the CU Denver community. Their support has ranged from student scholarships, to departmental programming, to initiatives across the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). Rick established both an undergraduate research fund and a faculty scholarship fund. He has encouraged fellow faculty members to support CU Denver and has been a frequent contributor to others’ memorial and honorary funds. Perhaps the couple’s greatest legacy is the Rick and Elizabeth Gardner Endowed Doctoral Fellowship, which they established for PhD students in CU Denver’s Clinical Health Psychology program. The fellowship helps the Department of Psychology attract and support diverse cohorts of talented students, bringing the best and brightest to CU Denver. The couple designated a portion of their estate to sustain the Gardner Fellowship in perpetuity. Rick is a Trustee of the University of Colorado Foundation, Chair of the CLAS Dean’s Circle, and a member of both the Benson Society and the Heritage Society, which celebrate the university’s most generous donors. He also remains closely connected with the CU Denver community by meeting regularly with recipients of the Gardner Fellowship to offer mentorship and support and to learn about their research projects. In recognition of his decades of leadership and generosity, and for his ongoing commitment and service to the university, it is with deepest gratitude that the Regents of the University of Colorado award Dr. Rick Gardner the University Medal.

UNIVERSITY MEDAL 2022 ____________________________________________ Thomas Noel The University of Colorado Denver, Auraria Campus, and the broader community have greatly benefited from the passion, commitment, and vision of Dr. Thomas Noel, Professor Emeritus of History at CU Denver. For his obsession with the Highest State, Tom is also known as Dr. Colorado, a title affectionately bestowed by the CU-Denver PR department. For 15 years, Coloradans tuning in to Channel 9/NBC would often see Tom appearing as Dr. Colorado on the “Colorado and Company” show. After joining the faculty at CU Denver in 1977, Tom established the Public History Program, the CU Denver Historical Studies Journal, and taught a full load of courses nearly every term for 50 years. He served as the chair of CU Denver’s Department of History from 1992 to 1996 and vice chair from 2017 to 2020. As a historian and educator, Tom focused on Colorado and public history, teaching courses on everything from the American West to historic preservation to national park history. Students from well outside the Denver metropolitan region sought out CU Denver’s Public History and Preservation program because of Tom’s reputation for teaching exciting courses. Taking education beyond the classroom, he conducted many tours for CU’s extended programs and other public institutions. For the Smithsonian, he conducted a seven-day exploration of Colorado on all surviving passenger railroads called Railroading the Rockies, which continued for 24 summers. Tom was known for his ability to guide students into their first jobs as historians. He assembled a network of contacts within Colorado’s public history field, and he enthusiastically leveraged those contacts to help graduate students find their first internship. Tom also helped make published authors of many CU Denver history students by launching the annual Historical Studies Journal, which publishes the best student work and gives students the experience of translating their research into academic articles. Tom has made outstanding contributions to Colorado history, authoring or co-authoring 55 books. His book, “Buildings of Colorado,” won a top prize from the Colorado chapter of the American Institute of Architects. His “Colorado: A Historical Atlas” won the High Plains, Angie DeBow, and Colorado Book prizes for best Colorado history title. His most recent work, “Boom and Bust Colorado: From the 1859 Gold Rush to the 2020 Pandemic,” was published in September 2021. As a longtime former Sunday columnist for the Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post, Tom has also written at least a thousand articles, columns, and reviews. He received The Colorado Center for the Book Prize and the Frank Waters Prize, among others. Among numerous awards and accolades, Tom was appointed State Historian for the State of Colorado in 2018, received the Dana Crawford Award for outstanding contributions to Historic Preservation from Colorado Preservation, and has been a member of the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame Advisory Board Member since 2007. For Tom’s lifelong passion for the Highest State; his dedication to the next generation of historians; and his decades of service to CU Denver, the Auraria Campus, and our state and national communities, it is with deepest gratitude that the Regents of the University of Colorado award Thomas Noel the University Medal.

UNIVERSITY MEDAL 2021 ____________________________________________ Lola and Rob Salazar As community leaders, philanthropists, and advocates for education, Lola and Rob Salazar have made an enduring impact not only on the University of Colorado Denver and its students, but also on the quality of education throughout Denver and the state of Colorado. Lola and Rob grew up in Denver and attended Denver Public Schools. Both were raised by modest, hard-working parents, whom they cite as their inspiration. Lola and Rob met at a high school football game and married the next year. They then set out on the hard work of building their lives and careers. They took turns finishing college while supporting their growing family. As a first-generation student, Lola received a bachelor's in Elementary Education from Metropolitan State University of Denver and a master's in Curriculum & Instruction from CU Denver. She then taught for eight years at Jefferson County Schools. Rob graduated from Adams State College. At age 26, he founded a CPA and consulting firm. He then co-founded a healthcare management company. After his company achieved substantial growth, Rob sold his shares to launch two new family initiatives: Central Street Capital and the Salazar Family Foundation. Central Street Capital is a private investment management company, where Rob serves as president and their children, Isiah and Angelique, serve as principals. Its office also houses the Salazar Family Foundation, where Lola serves as president. The Salazar Family Foundation’s mission is to encourage students to achieve their educational goals. Since it was established in 1999, the Foundation has awarded over $20 million to organizations committed to improving the quality of education and expanding student access, with special emphasis on youth empowerment in the Latino community. The Foundation has consistently supported the Denver Public Schools Foundation, the Latin American Educational Foundation, Metropolitan State University of Denver, and CU Denver. In 2017, the Salazar Family Foundation pledged its largest single donation to support the construction of CU Denver’s first named building, the Lola & Rob Salazar Student Wellness Center, and to sustain its ongoing operations and student services. Since opening in 2018, the Lola & Rob Salazar Student Wellness Center has become the heart of CU Denver, promoting a culture of wellness and community through its innovative design and programming. Sitting at the center of campus, it is often referred to as students’ “home away from home” that offers a full range of wellness programs—from exercise classes and equipment, to mental health services and meditation spaces, to financial coaching and a community food pantry. In appreciation of their incredible impact on the Colorado community, Lola and Rob were honored with the 2019 Outstanding Philanthropist Award by the Association for Fundraising Professionals Colorado Chapter. They are also members of the Latino Leadership Institute’s Hall of Fame, among many other honors. To recognize their transformative gift to CU Denver and our students, as well as their decades of investment and advocacy in advancing education in our city and state, it is with deepest gratitude that the Regents of the University of Colorado award Lola and Rob Salazar the University Medal. 20

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD 2022 ____________________________________________ Wayne Cascio As a founding member of the University of Colorado Denver Business School and a faculty leader for more than 40 years, Dr. Wayne Cascio set a standard of excellence in his research, teaching, and service that has advanced the field of management and distinguished CU Denver’s Business School on the national and international stage. Wayne received his PhD in industrial and organizational psychology in 1973 from the University of Rochester. Following faculty appointments at Florida International University and the University of California, Berkeley, he joined CU Denver in 1981 as a tenured full professor. In 2009, Wayne was named the inaugural Robert H. Reynolds Chair in Global Leadership. Today, he serves as professor emeritus in management and human resources management. Over the course of his career, Wayne has published more than 200 articles and 33 books, including “Applied Psychology in Talent Management,” considered the seminal textbook in industrial and organizational psychology and included as required reading in many top graduate programs. Wayne is revered not only for his prodigious output, but also for his personal mission to bridge academic research and business practice to enhance how organizations operate. He repeatedly developed practices that were cutting-edge innovations at the time and have now become established ways of doing business—from implementing non-discrimination policies in hiring, to developing analytics to evaluate HR practices, to establishing certification standards for HR professionals, to promoting thoughtful and data-driven approaches to downsizing. In recognition of his outstanding research contributions, Wayne has received numerous awards and honors. To name just a few: In 2008, he was selected by the Journal of Management as one of the most influential scholars over the past 25 years. He was a recipient of the Michael R. Losey Excellence in Human Resource Research Award (the lifetime achievement award from the Society for Human Resource Management) and the Herbert Heneman Jr. Award for Career Achievement (the highest honor of the Academy of Management’s Human Resources Division). At CU Denver, Wayne has been widely celebrated for his impact as an educator and leader. His students have voted him “Outstanding Teacher” and “Professor of the Year” across multiple programs and over multiple decades. In 2011, the University of Colorado Board of Regents named Wayne a Distinguished University Professor in recognition of his leadership and outstanding contributions in teaching and research. In addition to investing his talent and energy in building CU Denver’s Business School, Wayne has also made significant philanthropic investments in its programs, its physical spaces, and—most of all—its students. Wayne is a Fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources, the Academy of Management, the American Psychological Association, the Australian Human Resources Institute, and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, where he also served as president. He was on the Board of Governors for the Academy of Management and the Board of Directors for the Society for Human Resources Management, including one year as chair. For his commitment to excellence as a researcher and educator, his extraordinary contributions to the field of management worldwide, and his visionary leadership in helping build the CU Denver Business School, it is with deepest gratitude that the Regents of the University of Colorado award Wayne Cascio the Distinguished Service Award. 21

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD 2022 ____________________________________________ Rebecca Kantor (posthumous) The University of Colorado Denver’s School of Education and Human Development (SEHD) and higher education in general have benefited greatly from the passionate leadership, innovative spirit, and inclusive approach of beloved Dean Dr. Rebecca Kantor. Rebecca was a forward-thinking, influential, tireless education champion who served as Dean of SEHD for nearly a decade, touching the lives of innumerable students, faculty, and staff. Rebecca was also a consummate academic leader, setting an example through her prominence as a scholar, educator, and leader. With a storied career in education that spanned more than four and a half decades, her unbridled passion for reimaging the potential and education of young children led her to become a national leader in early childhood education. At a time when the importance of early childhood education was not yet widely recognized by policymakers, Rebecca generated over $20 million in grant funding in the field. This helped bolster the legitimacy and vitality of this critical area of study, and it elevated the field through her pursuit of enriching and culturally affirming early care and education for young children. Driven to ensure the best outcomes for children, Rebecca spent her entire professional career in roles that supported these goals, both as a teacher and as a university administrator. At CU Denver, Rebecca led the continuing transformation of SEHD into an innovative school that offers contemporary, responsive, and flexible educator, counselor, and researcher preparation. Under her leadership, SEHD also made gains in diversifying new hires and developing programs focused on equity and diversity. It is thanks to Rebecca’s efforts that today, justice- and equity-focused knowledge is fairly and transparently built into the curriculum at SEHD—at all levels. Rebecca earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester in developmental psychology and linguistics, and her master’s with teaching certifications in early childhood and deaf education, as well as her doctorate in language and cognitive development from Boston University. She spent 27 years at the Ohio State University—first as an assistant professor and the Director of the Teacher Preparation Laboratory School and, ultimately, as Director of the School of Teaching and Learning, achieving rank and tenure as a full professor. Her scholarship was focused on the study of classrooms as social contexts for teaching and learning, and reform of teacher preparation in partnership with schools. She published numerous articles, book chapters, and books in her areas of expertise. As a thought leader in the education space, Rebecca was frequently interviewed by national media outlets for her expertise in early childhood education and served on multiple early-childhood task forces and advisory boards. In 2018, she joined the Governor’s Education Vision Council and was appointed by Governor Jared Polis to Colorado’s Early Childhood Leadership Commission in 2021. Rebecca was woven into the fabric of not just our campus community and Colorado at large, but also the international community. For her service to CU Denver and decades of dedication to the field of education, it is with deepest gratitude that the Regents of the University of Colorado posthumously award Dr. Rebecca Kantor with the Distinguished Service Award.

The Norlin Charge to Graduates

___________________________________________________________________ From the baccalaureate address by President George Norlin of the University of Colorado, June 1935. ___________________________________________________________________ “You are now certified to the world at large as alumni of the university. She is your kindly mother and you her cherished sons and daughters. This exercise denotes not your severance from her, but your union with her. Commencement does not mean, as many wrongly think, the breaking of ties and the beginning of life apart. Rather it marks your initiation in the fullest sense into the fellowship of the university, as bearers of her torch, as centers of her influence, as promoters of her spirit. The university is not the campus, not the buildings on the campus, not the faculties, not the students of any one time—not one of these or all of them. The university consists of all who come into and go forth from her halls, who are touched by her influence and who carry on her spirit. Wherever you go, the university goes with you. Wherever you are at work, there is the university at work. What the university purposes to be, what it must always strive to be, is represented on its seal, which is stamped on your diplomas—a lamp in the hands of youth. If its light shines not in you and from you, how great is its darkness! But if it shines in you today, and in the thousands before you, who can measure its power? with hope and faith, I welcome you into the fellowship. I bid you farewell only in the sense that I pray you may fare well. You go forth, but not from us. We remain, but not severed from you. God go with you and be with you and us.”

THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO

THE HISTORY _______________________________________________________________________ The University of Colorado Denver is the leading public university in Denver. CU Denver offers 42 undergraduate degrees and 59 master’s degrees. Doctoral programs are offered in Public Affairs, Health and Behavioral Science, Leadership for Educational Equity, Education and Human Development, Design and Planning, Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering and Applied Sciences, Applied Mathematics, Clinical Health Psychology, Health Economics, Geography, Planning, and Design, School Psychology, Integrative and Systems Biology and a joint degree in Computer Science and Information Systems. Programs are tailored to meet the needs of a diverse student population, with special emphasis on assuring professional opportunities after graduation. Classes, serving nearly 15,000

students, are offered during weekdays, evening hours and on weekends. The University of Colorado’s Department of Correspondence and Extension was established in Denver in 1912 to meet the needs of a growing population. As course offerings expanded, so did the demand for degree-granting status. The Denver Extension Center was renamed the University of Colorado-Denver Center in 1965, and by 1969, 23 fields of undergraduate study and 11 of graduate study were offered. In 1972, the Colorado General Assembly appropriated funds to build the Auraria Campus, CU Denver’s current site, and renamed the “Center” CU Denver. Two years later, the University of Colorado reorganized into four campuses – Denver, Colorado Springs, Health Sciences Center (Denver)

and Boulder. On June 30, 2004, the University of Colorado Board of Regents gave final approval to the consolidation of the University of Colorado at Denver with the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. At CU Denver, faculty members bring their work experiences to the classroom; they are aware of the challenges and advances of the urban environment and are responsive to the needs of students and the community. This combination of talented faculty and a highly motivated student body creates a vital and exciting educational environment. The goal is to offer its students the unique educational opportunity to combine real-world experience with academic excellence.

THE MACE _______________________________________________________________________ For centuries, in academic and ecclesiastical processionals, a mace has been carried by the marshal to symbolize the official opening and closing of a formal event. The design of the mace encompasses all aspects of education. A globe representing the worldly scope

of education is the base of the staff. The middle of the design, which is the shaft, represents the profile of the Denver skyline and the Auraria campus. At the top of the mace, flames spiral upward representing the colleges and schools, sending her graduates as bearers of the torch into the community and world.

The mace was designed and created by Michael Brohman, instructor in the College of Arts & Media visual arts department, with special emphasis in sculpture and a CU Denver graduate with a Master’s in Architecture and Planning ’95.

THE ACADEMIC REGALIA _______________________________________________________________________ The pageantry and dress of the academic procession have been inherited from the medieval universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries where academic life began, first in the church, then in the guilds. The teaching guild was the guild of the Master of Arts. The Bachelor was the apprentice of the Master, and the dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. Principal features of academic dress are the gown, the cap and the hood. Early in its evolution, it became necessary for universities to set rules to preserve the dignity and meaning of the academic dress. Two English universities, Oxford and Cambridge, are particularly noted for the development of the authentic academic costume, which through the centuries has changed only slightly. Formal academic attire for American campuses was established in 1895 with the adoption of the Intercollegiate Code, which prescribed the patterns, colors and materials for each part of the regalia for the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. The American Council of Education presented a revised code, which generally governs the style of academic dress today. The Gown The flowing gown comes from the twelfth century. While it originally may have been worn as protection against the chill of unheated buildings, today it has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship,

for it covers any dress of rank or social standing underneath. Gowns vary in their trimming and the sleeve design. The doctoral gown has velvet facings down the front and three velvet chevrons on the bell-shaped sleeves. These velvet trimmings may be black or the prescribed color of the academic area. The master’s gown has oblong sleeves, open at the wrist, while the bachelor’s gown has long pointed sleeves; neither has trimming. The bachelor’s gown is always worn closed; master’s and doctoral gowns may be worn open or closed. The Cap When Roman law freed the slaves, they won the privilege of wearing a cap. The academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship as well as responsibility and dignity. Old poetry records the cap of scholarship as square to symbolize the book. The color of the tassel denotes the discipline. The square black mortarboard is the recommended cap, though some schools have adopted other styles. Doctors may wear a velvet cap with a gold tassel. The Hood The hood identifies the level of the degree, the school that granted it and the academic area. The silk lining of the hood is the color or colors of the school. The color of the facing denotes the discipline represented by the degree. Some of the colors you may see represented today are: Architecture – Blue Violet Arts – White Business – Sapphire Blue Dentistry – Lilac

Education – White Education Specialists – Blue Engineering – Orange Environmental Design – Brown Fine Arts – Brown Journalism – Crimson Law – Purple Medicine – Green Music – Pink Nursing – Apricot Pharmacy – Olive Public Affairs – Peacock Blue Science – Gold The Honor Cords Silver and gold honors cords are worn by graduates who are awarded the following honors by their school or college: Summa cum laude (with highest honors) Magna cum laude (with high honors) Cum laude (with honors) Special honors Honors Distinction The gold and royal blue honors cords designate members of the Golden Key National Honor Society. The red and white cords recognize those students who have served through their participation in Student Government. Red, white and blue cords are worn by millitary veterans.

THE UNIVERSITY SEAL _______________________________________________________________________ In its history, the University of Colorado has used three different seals. The current seal, adopted in 1908, depicts a male Greek classical figure sitting in front of a pillar and holding a scroll. Next to the figure, laurel branches frame a burning torch. The inscription in Greek reads “Let Your Light Shine.” The seal’s designer, Henry Read of Denver, chose the classical motif because Greek civilization “stands as the criterion of culture.”

The laurel symbolizes honor or success, the youth suggests the “morning of life” and the scroll represents written language. From 1893 to 1908, the University seal was a copy of Wyon’s medallion, “Science Trims the Lamp of Life.” In this version, a Greek woman knelt before a lamp, and stalks of mariposa lilies decorated the border. Before 1893, an adaptation of the Colorado State Seal was used, but it was never adopted by

the Board of Regents. The seal is used primarily on official documents, such as diplomas and transcripts that have been issued on behalf of the University. The Board of Regents uses the seal on its official documents and publications. The seal also appears on the President’s Chain of Office, the University Mace, Regent regalia and various formal publications.
