StephenBerman,MD,wasbornin1947inWilkes-Barre,Pennsylvania.He graduatedfromTempleUniversityMedicalSchoolandcompletedhispediatric residencyatCUSchoolofMedicine,servingaschiefresidentfrom1976–77. Earlyinhiscareer,hewasmentoredbydepartmentleadersincludingC.Henry Kempe,BonnieCampandFredBattaglia,andinfluencedbycolleagues,Doug JonesandDickKrugman.Steverosewithinthedepartment,takingonmany leadershiproles,includingserviceassectionheadofGeneralAcademic Pediatricstwiceduringhiscareer(1981–89and1998–2007).In2005,hereceived theChildren’sHospitalColoradoEndowedChairofGeneralPediatrics.In2008, hewasnamedaCareerTeachingScholarbytheDepartmentofPediatrics.
Asapassionateadvocateforchildren,Bermanhelpeddraftmultiplehealthcare billsenactedbytheColoradoStateLegislaturetoimproveaccesstocareand insurancecoverageforchildren.In1989hewasnameddirectoroftheColorado MedicallyIndigentProgramwherehedesignedandimplementedtheColorado StateChildHealthPlaninColorado.HeservedaspresidentoftheAmerican AcademyofPediatricsfrom2001–02andinthisrole,hecarriedastrongfocus onchildhealthadvocacy.HewascreditedwithchampioningtheMediKids HealthInsuranceActof2009.
Asanactiveclinicalandoutcomesresearcher,Bermanreceivedsupportforhis researchfromtheWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)andmultiplefederal agenciesincludingtheNationalInstitutesofHealth,CentersforDiseaseControl andPrevention,AgencyforHealthcareResearchandQuality,andseveralother nationalandlocalfoundations.BermanwasaspecialadvisortoWHO,thePan AmericanHealthOrganization,andtheUnitedStatesAgencyforInternational Developmentaswellasaconsultanttomanycountriesthroughouttheworld.
Wellknownforhiscontributionstopediatriceducation,heheldmanyleadership rolesinthedepartmentincludingdirectorofthePediatricPrimaryCareResidency andPediatricHousestaffProgramCommitteeandimplementedanadvocacyand globalhealthtrackforpediatricresidents.Heauthoredthepediatrictextbooks “PediatricDecisionMaking”and“GettingitRightforChildren–StoriesofPediatric CareandAdvocacy”andpublishedover100peer-reviewedresearcharticles.He hadspecialinterestsinepidermolysisbullosa,acuteotitismedia,acute respiratoryinfections,vaccineresearchandimmunizationregistries.
In2011,BermanwasappointeddirectoroftheCenterforGlobalHealthatthe ColoradoSchoolofPublicHealth,apositioninwhichheserveduntilthetime ofhisdeath.Inthisposition,heservedasthepediatricclinicalresearch consultanttotheNationalAcademyofSciences’BoardofScienceand TechnologyinDevelopingCountriesprojectontheetiologyandepidemiology ofacuterespiratoryinfections;aprojectcarriedoutin12countries worldwide.Heandhiscolleague,EdwinAsturias,MD,establishedthefirst Children’sHospitalColoradoandUniversityofColoradointernationalclinical siteforeducation,serviceandresearchinruralGuatemala.
Bermanwillberememberedfora50-yearcareerdedicatedtotheimprovement ofthewell-beingandhealthcareofunderservedchildrenatthestate,national andinternationallevel,forwhichhereceivednumerousawardsforhisworkin healthservices,healthpolicyandadvocacy.Atleastthreegenerationsof pediatriciansinColoradorecognizedSteveasanadvisor,mentorandfriend.

SinceJuly2019,WisehasservedastheJuvenileCareMonitorfortheU.S.Federal CourtoverseeingthetreatmentofmigrantchildreninU.S.detention.Since February2022,hehasalsoservedasthesenioradvisortotheSAFERUkraineand GazaEmergencyinitiativeswhichhaveevacuatedmorethan1,700childrenwith cancerfromtheseconflictareas.Hehaspublishedwidelyandhis interdisciplinarycontributionshavebeenrecognizedbyelectiontotheAmerican AcademyofArtsandSciences.
