01 IN THE VALLEY,MORNING SING ANCIENT VILLAGE RESIDENTIAL RECONSTRUCTION
Collaborater: Aohan Li Instructor: Yi Dong Location: Gangtou Village, Guangzhou, China Architectural Design - Competition Proposal Design 70%, Drawing 70%, Physical Model 50%. Project Duration: 4 Weeks
"In the valley, morning sings" originates from one of the eight Gangtou phenomenon, which means in the harvest season, people who live in leisure and affluence sing in the morning. As time goes by, although this scene no longer exists, the optimistic and positive attitude towards life and the rich and harmonious collective lifestyle of people in Gangtou village have been inherited. Based on the consideration of cultural customs, daily activities, and economic benefits of Gangtou village, Huadu, Guangzhou, this design chooses the combination of Cantonese opera performance and tea-drinking activities as the internal driving force of architectural design. The core space of this design is the semi-outdoor sinking theater and the new roof The skeleton continued and coiled from the roof of the original building, completing the gradual change from the roof to the wall body, which creates an interesting gathering place for local villagers and tourists, hoping to inject new vitality into Gangtou village through a new interpretation of traditional cultural activities.
Original Building
Collapsed Wall
[Original Situation] 1. The original site is a traditional village house with a front yard with collapsed brick wall. 2. There are 2 vacant ground with different size on the west and north of the site. Both ground can be used in the new proposal. 3. The site is located in the center of the village, a great spot for local activities.
[Site Plan] 5
10
Step 1: Define the original site to be a tea house and the vacant sites to be show space and landscape. Build a new roof system based on the old wall to make the height sufficient for two stories so that both vacant sites can be adequately viewed from the new proposal.
Step 2: Propose a new rooftop for the west site to form a concentrated show space for the traditional Chinese theatre play. The new rooftop on the north site also forms a backyard to create an open space in the relatively narrow village alley for an implication of the potential new building.
Step 3: The -1 floor is introduced to the building to make the center stage more engaging. At the same time, the show stage is set between the -1 floor and the ground floor so that pedestrians from the street can also be introduced into the tea house.
Step 4: Meanwhile, a second floor is designed with the same agenda. The tea house is now operated with two major activities: tea and Chinese theatre. These activities are happening in three different levels, which gives the village a different typology, a combination of the new and the old.

02 Nantong CBD Landmark (270m) THE LANDMARD WITH THE MOST HEIGHTS IN NANTONG, JIANGSU, CHINA. (CONSTRUCTION IN PROGRESS) PROFESSIONAL WORK Collaborater: Hongyi Cai Location: Nantong, Jiangsu, China East China Architectural & Research Design Institution Skyscraper Design -09/2020-06/2021 Design 70%, Technical Drawing 30%, Render 100%. Project Duration: 10 Months
This major project went through my previous professional career, the tallest building in a Tier 4 city in China. Initially, the project was suspended due to a design problem. The central conflict in this project is among client, government, and design. The government would like the building to be the landmark of Nantong, which indicates the building to be different on the exterior facade. On the other hand, the client would like to profit from this project by defining it as a high-end residential building since the domestic residential market can only be sold in the form of a high-end residence. In that case, I proposed an integrated commercial function on the lower level to form an exciting TOD typology and high-end residential on the higher level with a large scale atrium with six shared platforms with different tasks throughout the atrium. Moreover, an exclusive club is arranged at the top of the building, accessible to the residence and the club members. Speaking of residential and commercial, I proposed an atypical entrance for the residence. On the south side, through a long escalator, the residence can access a grand dome hall.

Ground Floor Plan The commercial mainly occupies the north side of the ground floor since it is directly connected to the subway system both on the ground and under the ground. Since the block has a small podium, and the regulation indicates no facilities on the walkway, the cooling tower will be situated on the 4th floor to make the ground cleaner. The south side is designed as the residential entrance, with a cantilevered canopy to create a welcoming environment.
How It Generate The whole architecture is generated through a relatively simple procedure that uses a couple of different ellipsoids to shape the massing and create entrances, atrium, facade identity, rooftop, and lobby.

Original Proposal The atrium is the production of the idea of being unique. The atrium serves the residents with different functions, such as recreation, business, etc. Moreover, the north entrance is designed as the commercial concentration to become a TOD typology project. The south entrance becomes the residential lobby that faces a large scale of green space to create a more pleasant living environment.
Structure & Space [Final Proposal] Different sizes of spheres form the entire building. Starting from the bottom on the north side is the commercial dome, which lures pedestrians from the street and the subway system to come inside the building. On the third floor, the somewhat more giant white dome is the residential lobby. Residents can access the hall through the south entrance. The space that organizes the residential is a vast atrium with various platforms to separate the residential into several parts. Each forum has an enormous truss system to support itself, creating a unique structural design.

03 S HADOW FABRICATION PRE-REVOLUTION RESIDENTIAL RECONSTRUCTION
Individual Work Instructor: Qiuyu Chen Location: Wuhan, Hubei, China Architectural Design - Core Studio(2017 Spring) Project Duration: 8 Weeks
"Qi Fa" Neighborhood was created during a particular history segment - "The Big Leap" in the 1960s. At that time, China was trying to uprise quickly so that we imitate Soviet collectivism and their house form. The neighborhood had developed since. During the 1980s, more residentials were built indifference under the background of China's economic boost, and a couple of more in the 2000s. Nowadays, the neighborhood is occupied mainly by landlords and renters. In the 1970s, collectivism was at its prime; acquaintance society, a by-product of collectivism, was brewed secretly. Surprisingly, the mechanism of shadow play matches the social form at that time, which was very popular in the local area. The combination of shadow play and the collectivist background will retell this magical place's story in the form of architecture and human activities.
Strategy 1: Collectivism & Shadow Play
Strategy 2: Break the "Grid"
The specific society and neighborhood form is created under the influence of collectivism socialism, which breeds the potential Aquantence Society. The relationship is similar to the traditional Chinese art - Shadow Play, the combination of shadow play and Soviet From architecture vividly tells the story of this special site. Projection of different period are as follow.
The old Soviet form residential is mostly grid and rectangle, but since the economic reform, the civilian’s need is recombined more and more special need has occurred. In this site. There are actions of remoding the street void space with Abnormal Shape and dynamic objects that indicate the local site’s grid needs to be broken. The method to break the grid is divided into three degrees.
Large Scale Strategy Split the neighborhood's major street to activate the inside vibes and commercial potential. Also, the rise of the central street will increase access from the outside to this originally closed block. The zig-zag shape breaks the rigid grid that was created back to the1960s for collectivism.
House Scale Strategy
Module 3m is a scale extracted from the original architecture as a basic scale of module to reshape the street
Human Scale Strategy Local civilians began to create self-built space since the original collectivist dorm could not meet the need of their daily life. For example, there is only one kitchen per three dorms, so locals do their chores outside under their selfbuilt room with canvas, threads, trees, and poles. These spaces represent the recombination of people's needs after the end of collectivism. Nowadays, the difference is coming into obvious.
Typology Catalogue
Module Catalogue
The original activity typology exists on the site. I list the total four most active typology, including their composition, space order, and location.
TYPOLOGY The Basic Module is transformed from the original typology I studied earlier; the scale not only fits the human scale but also fit the original scale of neighboor

Step 1 Install the Hinge Joint The main loading structure of the building in the triangular structure which uses hinge joint to passes the major load into the ground. And it doesn’t create any other force on the old buildings.

Step 2 Remould the Building The third level of the project has an extended area of the kitchen of the food stall, which requires a remolding of the old building.
Food Stall
Step 3 Assemble the Module Assembling the modules according to the customized number and typology of each elements to form the main body.
Step 4 Create the Shadow The last step is to install the shadow element-animal curtain, the process can be decided by users whether to put on a wall or door or transparent curtain.
Chess
Ground Floor Plan Ground Floor is designed for personal sellers and pedestrians. As the most important street in the neighborhood, it is set to be the widest pedestrians road considering the situation of people lining up for the snack around the rush hour.
2nd Floor Plan The second floor is designed for people who would like to grab a bite quickly. This circumstance mostly happens on office group nearby, who prefer food with lower price and a place to social with their co-workers.
3rd Floor Plan 3rd floor is designed based on the original commercial deli on the first floor. As the ground floor is occupied by a snack cart, the original food stall is moved to the third floor. Kitchens are arranged in the old Resi to make the upper level more alive. There are two bridges connecting from the third level to the fourth level.
Top Floor Plan The roof floor focuses on pleasure activity. Since high towers surround the neighbor, sunlight is hard to gain with the narrow road between buildings; we are trying to lift the activity level to the rooftop to increase the quality of the old’s life.

After the invasion of western colonizers in 1890, western products started pouring into the Chinese market. Concession culture became the symbol of Shanghai, even if it was the footprint of colonialism. Today, Shanghai is still the city with the most Starbucks in Asia. But not only material products but also the city's ideology is blended. As time goes by, Power Station of Ar t, the f irst government- owned contemporar y museum, seems to become the portal of western ideology and the tool to control the public.

The Shanghai International Settlement originated from the merger in the year 1863 of the British and American enclaves in Shanghai, in which British subjects and American citizens would enjoy extraterritoriality and consular jurisdiction under the term of treaties signed in the 19th century with the Qing Dynasty, which was established following the defeat of the Qing army by the British in the First Opium War. The international settlement came to an abrupt end in December 1941 when Japanese troops stormed in immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The power station was the product of imitating the British Shanghai electric company but then was taken over by the Japanese army during the war. The power generators were detained and used by the Japanese military to generate electricity. This period of history very much imprinted the land of Shanghai.
[POWER] After the Shanghai Expo, the area that PSA locates is defined as a cultural and art area. An art & artist incubator is what the government wants. The price of housing has tripled since the opening of the Shanghai Expo. But art is a very persuasive methodology, which the government would like to control by themselves. Then comes the proposal of PSA. Power Station of Art is merely a museum, a factory, or architecture; it symbolizes power. Power Station of Art is the first government-owned contemporary museum. The government entirely entitles the power of choosing and curating a modern art exhibition. Meanwhile, the art market in China has been one of the hottest markets in the world recently. And among all of the auction authorities, POLY is the most powerful institution, which is also government-owned and makes its living by manufacturing weapons. Rising the price of art can benefit the government to clean plenty of corruption funds and promote a specific type of artwork that the government would like to promote. To form a closed loop, PSA promotes the work to the public and convinced public with a certain artistic taste.
[STATION OF ART] The art exhibited in the PSA is carefully picked and reviewed by the authorities. Artwork should be not only modern, but also politically insensitive. Once it fits the artistic taste of the auction market, it will be immediately arranged on the exhibition agenda. Especially when the curator or the artist has the experience of studying aboard, or westernized ideology, the public will be willingly to purchase the tickets and post them on the social media.

Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. Urban & Architectural Design - Fall, 2021 Design 70%, Drawing 70%, Physical Model 60%. Grade: High Pass (Top 5%)
The major viaduct over 155th street with Macombs Dam Bridge establishes an important connections between Upper Manhattan and the Yankee stadium centered recreation infrastructures in the Bronx. Our project seeks to connect the larger scale to neighborhood walkability, using the post office site as an important intersection between modes. A more friendly and lively pedestrian experience is generated by the introduction of optimized walking routes passing through new and preexisted open green spaces on the ground level and bridge linking across the Harlem River Drive. A total amount of 620 affordable housing and market rate units are designed to address the demand for affordable housing in Bradhurst. The program also advocates for enclosed and outdoor commercial spaces and various community service programs, such as after school, co-working and community library, integrated into the residential volumes to further facilitate an involving diversity of urban lifestyle in the neighborhood. These design strategies attempt to elaborate possible solutions for a local dynamic urban narrative. The post office site, therefor,e is transformed into an ‘URBAN BLENDER’.

06 Miniaturized Hong Kong CENTRAL ESCALATOR SYSTEM RECONSTRUCTION CENTRAL, HONGKONG, CHINA Collaborater: Yuan Tian Instructor: Ting Yin Location: Hongkong, China Urban & Architectural Design - Summer, 2019 Design 70%, Drawing 70%, Modelling 70%. Project Duration: 8 Weeks
Hong Kong's central escalator system has existed for almost 40 years; it served the city as the product of high efficiency. During morning rush hours, 6 a.m.-10 a.m., the escalator function from south to north (foot of the hill) aims to serve the office crowd. From 10 a.m.-24 a.m. escalator runs in the opposite orientation for travelers and civilians. But after 40 years of evolution, the escalator can no longer fit the local identity; strategy is in need. The particular characteristic of the Hong Kong process is unique; cultural identity varies from block to block dramatically. We hope to show the high-efficiency quality and extreme Culture Diversity. The strategy we apply can be split into the urban level and the humanscale level. On an urban scale speaking, we input a new closed commuting system which works on two-level (escalator level, cable car level), to increase the efficiency from 6 a.m.-10 a.m. Human scale speaking, the most basic component is a special module that fits both track and cable car systems. The station represents the strategy on an architectural level; each station's form or specialty is extracted from the local block to show the most significant aspect of the neighborhood. The first station is reconstructed based on the original famous Central Market, the second station represents the famous street market, the third one is based on the Soho Bar area, and the last one enlarges the XieLi St. Mosque.

Mosque station is the last station of the commuting line, and it functions as both a station and a mosque. The module track goes into the station beneath the major architecture directly into the bathing area. From there, the passenger who is willing to get off can start his ritual as a Muslim, from bathing to praying or going to the top of the tower. Meanwhile, the underground has extra space for module DIY; for example ,cutting hair and bathing module fits the station for its function. 07 Social Condenser WASTED PIER GROUP RECONSTRUCTION WUHAN, HUBEI, CHINA
Collaborater: Wandi Jin Instructor: Mei Jiang Location: Wuhan, Hubei, China Urban & Architectural Design - Core Studio, 2018 Design 70%, Drawing 70%, Modelling 80% Project Duration: 12 Weeks
Wuhan's Hankou Beach Wharf Group was once the busiest and most vibrant area in central China. With the development of modern transportation, the Hankou Wharf Group has gradually declined and has fallen into an obsolete and lifeless place, even separated from the rest by fencing. We want to activate the whole pier area along the Yangtze River and endow this industrial heritage with new functions and significance by renovating one of the piers. We define architecture as a modern social condenser. We use several logics to arrange the activities. The most important one is that activities go from the public (social encouraged) to private so that social action can be promoted on the ground floor. An exciting vibe can be spread from architecture to further areas in a linear order. Secondary logic is that installations are arranged based on their property, whether activities happen in water or ground. Happiness is regarded as the intrinsic driving force of the social condenser. Each installation is created based on one specific pleasant activity people would like to do in the riverside area. Architectural forms and structural systems are drawn from the image of the boat of the ancient pier, the Monroe sparrow, every day. So that people can re-see such urban photos and landscapes. Meanwhile, a certain period of history can be respected and remembered in this way.
Urban Scale Generation The Hankou Wharf area still has two working piers as the ferry boat for transportation and view, contributing to the visitor traffic for the site. The renovation project is not only for the single wasted pier but for the whole area, so an urban scale strategy needs to activate the linear region.
Step 1 Take Down the Wall Taking down the wall that prevent the area from urban profile can enable the basic sight contact.
Step 2 Float the Station Make the ground floor more fluent by overheading the station to increase the urban fluency and accessibility
Step 3 Build the Bridge Build the bridge on the second level to make a pedestrian path and connect the other station
Step 4 Reuse the Cable Car Reuse the cable car as a tourist-based transportation system and also a installation itself
Step 5 Input the Architecture Architecture can form a aggregation effect with the park nearby to generate a activity center in the area. The site is located at the Hankou Wharf, which consists of dozens of wasted piers and several working ferry piers that provide thousands of people. Many residents live around the site who have lived here for centuries. Their activities are generated through the interference of the Yangtze River. Meanwhile, the area is going through some changes that would bring a new crowd to the site.

Installation is a combination of the major activity-Climbing and minor activity-Gaming, also inserted the interference of the Vertical Wall.
Installation is a combination of major activity-Ferris Wheel which is a way for people to observe different activity happening in architecture which function as a elevator.
Pleasure Condenser The result is various based on the specific logic you use to array the activity events. The logic we use is that from bottom to top, the events go from social to isolate so that the event at the bottom can attract more people and spread the vibe to a wider range of areas.
Top Floor Plan - The Canvas The top floor of the Pleasure Condenser aims to create an environment of peaceful atmosphere and self-indulgence, so it mainly consists of meditation, peak, bungee, and the intersection of the vertical elevator.

08 CLOUD & RAIN ON SITE WOOD BUILDING PROPOSAL
Individual Work Instructor: Ping Wang Location: Louna, Guizhou, China Architectural Design - Competition Proposal Project Duration: 12 Weeks
"Cloud & Rain" tries to emphasize reminding the traveler to pay attention to the local context. LouNa is famous for its soft weather that almost half of the year is drizzle day, so the local architecture uses sloping roofs to drain the rain. But since we aim to arrange for the traveler to experience that characteristic, we design the roof in an opposite way that collects the water by the central funnel installation. Rain will follow through the central hole and fall down to the water canal on the ground. The form was inspired by the traditional Chinese toy "East, South, West, North ."Each part is responsible for a living function. South for living room, North for entrance, East for bedroom, West is for half outdoor space. All nodal structure points are designed with premanufactured structures, nails, and screws. The on-site assembling process is guided with the simplest instruction that can be handled by three students
Shape Origin Rain Sun Cloud
The form transformation is abstract from the local's natural environment - karst landform and local residence. The housing typology in Louna is unique; people try to lift the building from the ground to avoid humidity and rain. We reverse the roof slope to create a funnel to collect rain for the solo traveler to experience the particular context.

Diaojiaolou, also known as a stilted building, is a traditional residence of Miao, Zhuang, Buyi, Dong, Shui, Tujia, etc. There are a total of five wildly used typologies. The stilted building is designed to fit the local weather, which has many rainy days around the year and a humid environment. The way each typology fits different environments varies according to the varying mountain shape and weather. Moreover, each typology can develop into a housing proto-type of a traveler's dwelling. The similarity they share makes the form more reasonable.
The form of the house is abstract of traditional Chinese paper art - "Dong, Nan, Xi, Bei," which splits from the center into four bodies of the same size. We try to adjust each part for different living functions, such as living, sleeping, etc. Finally, we achieve the goal of balancing other functions' areas and structure the rationality of dwelling.
Construction Process The on-site construction process should consider several factors, such as the number of constructors, local weather, and material processing difficulties. Nine steps total are considered to be done. From placing the concrete foundation to paving the bamboo cover, each step aims to take the shortest period for quick build on site.

Step 1: Use short-pedriod and water proof concrete to form the foundation
Step 2: Install the four center columns and tie them to create a center structure.
Step 3: Tie the thread of the four dual columns to center structure .
Step 4: Use the pre-installed structure to fix the four "Y" columns.
Step 5: Install the secondry structure of the architecture to combine column system.
Step 6: Use thin wood strips to fill the ribs for roof and platforms.
Step 7: Install the roof and platforms with wide wood strips and nails.
Step 8: Install the bamboo made walls and water channel which create privacy.
Step 9: Waterproof the entire house to prevent it from frequent raining.

Relationship With Context "Cloud & Rain" not only emphasizes the relationship between the traveler and raining, but it also explores the relationship between architecture and nature context, in this case, the cornfield. Louna is rich for its agriculture, mainly consisting of a cornfield. Putting the architecture on a relatively flat mountain corner covered by cornfields can give the traveler a peaceful environment that is the middle point between nature and human activity. From "Cloud & Rain," you can see a pure heart on one side of the platform and the village on the other, which is covered by the roof.

Corner Joint fuses several compelicated joint at corner and also decrease the sharp space feeling for the traveller
"Y" joint spreads from one wood pillar into two bridges. Using inherent insertion of steel board to reinforce joint.
Bottom Load Joint
The joint uses triangle joint to reinforce the intensity of three bridges joint here.
Central Pillar Joint
Mountain shape component solve the problem of the joint between bridge and pillar

Section & Foundation Detail [ Relation with Context & Roof Material Plan ]
The section describes the detail of the roof and central funnel structures while presenting the relationship between building and environment. Foundation detail articulates that we use several pre-installed components with quick-dry concrete to create a solid foundation for a building. Other than components and foundation, the rest of the building is made of wood. The tilt angle of the element is small enough to hold up the load of itself.
