General The island of Torcello is the first human settlement in this area. It’s the place where the inhabitants of the terraferma fled from the barbarian invasions at the beginning of the Middle Ages. Later the urban core was built, formed by a Byzantine Cathedral

(Santa Maria Dell Annunziata) and a basilica (Santa Fosca) which are still survive. Nevertheless, as the settlements in the remaining islands were consolidated, giving origin to the Medieval and Baroque Venice, Torcello was depopulated and today it is a practically uninhabited island but of great charm that has received many visitors in recent times.

From Venice
Concept Torcello is surranded by other islands such as Burano, and Mazzorbetto. There are regular passenger boats between these islands and Venice. The old pier is located in the southwest of the island of Torcello. It’s a normal pier and far away from the urban core. I started the project from the landscape point of view, trying to improve the experience of approaching the island. At this moment, there is a constant view of the island when people are arriving, and it’s such a pity that they cann’t enjoy a sequence of magnific and changable views during the journey. Therefore, I located the new pier in the northeast of the island, which is very near to the urban core, too.

Lagoon View One of the magnificent view in the lagoon, in which we can enjoy the tall tower and the ancient cathedral with the beautiful background of the snowy mountain.

Site Both the new pier and the museum are located in the urban center, next to the cathedral, the basilica and the current historic museum. The edge of this area is now untidy, occupied by deteriorated houses and garden without maintenance. The proposal tries to put in value the center of the island through the reordering of the public space and remodeling of the former museum.

Urban Core A beautiful perspective of the urban core of the island, in which we can see the cathedral, the basilica, the tower and the three buildings of the current museum.
Main Square This is a photo taken in the main square of the island, where you can see some pieces of stone lying on the ground. Some of them with historical values will be exhibited in the new museum.

Generation This is a remodeling and enlargement project of the current museum. First of all, it is created a central body composed of three pieces. The two sides are aligned and related to the both existing pavilions. The highest central volume, with the roman domus form (a compluvium up on the ceiling), serves as a bond and glue the two sides.

Lapidarium It’s an essential historic element, which I maintained in the project. It used to be the wall of the Palazzo of 15th century, and now an outdoor exhibition wall of the current museum. In my project, I took advantage of its linearity and directionality, transforming it into an entrance-gallery, which intensifies the meaning of the wall.

Organization Observing the site plan, you can see that there are two squares generated by the own arrangement of the the museum and the pier. The one between them, more geometric, links the two buildings and suggests that the visitors leave the pier and continue their visit to the museum. The lapidarium, which serves as the boundary of first the square, maintains its sculptures in the original place and generates an attractive route. The other square has more organic character. It hasn’t been touched almost anything except that a stone path is created which helps connect the exit of the museum with the existing main road. It is a minimal operation and the intention is to keep the situation as it is right now, since it is a place that has been generated over a long time and has a special value and beauty as a square before the cathdral and the basilica.

Material - Function The ground of the central body is grass, and it feels as if the organic square penetrated the museum. In contrast to the adjacent bodies, which have more closed spaces, either by glass, or by brick wall, the central one is more open. The sculptures of the lapidarium are placed in their original place. The most important pieces will be placed in the four niches while the others will be put in the exihibition areas in the interior of the pavilions.

The New Pier The project of the pier has the idea of generating a filter between the two limits which are the land and the water. In order to achieve this, four walls are constructed that separate five situations and people will feel a soft and continuous change during the process of approaching the island. The ceiling has also been conceived and designed as a replica of the museum entrance gallery ceiling, generating a more unitary experience.

Karst Topography Karst topography is a landscape formed from the dissolution of soluble rocks such as limestone, dolomite, and gypsum. It is characterized by underground drainage systems with sinkholes and caves. The Garraf Massif happens to have this kind of fantastic topography system. The picture below shows the interior world of the cave Emili SabatĂŠ, one of the magnificent work by the nature, which will intervene in the project.

The Mountain Products There are many gastronomic programs celebrated by the local government, taking advantage of the great variety of products of the mountain. The Park in the Table is one of the program that proposes to enjoy the nature of the park through delicious food and local wine. The associated restaurants offer dishes made with natural products. Mushrooms, snails, partridges or wild boar are some examples of the basis of the menus.

Concept Located in the Garraf Natural Park, the first thing that I have found is the fantastic karstic system there, thanks to which produces numerous caves. And at the same time, the modern people’s unhealthy way of living motivates me to propose a place in nature, in which they can experience the most primitive life that our ancestors of the Paleolithic age have, who are capable of hunting, fighting against animals with a very strong body. The project provides such an integrated experience in the Garraf Massif. The people who are living there have to learn how to hunt, how to clean hunted animals, and how to cook with fires and grill. In a similar way to our ancestors, there will also be meetings and rituals held in the sunken terrain designed in the project. The buried rooms with a skylight on the ceiling, also somehow remind us of the life of prehistoric times.

Concept After a previous analysis of the site, we first obtain that the urban border is not defined. And secondly that there is no park found in this community. GSEducationalVersion
New Urban Park
With this project, we want to provide a green public space in the urban edge, fulfilling at the same time the role of filter between the monuments and the community.

In order that the project does not go out of dimensions with respect to its surroundings, we decided to bury most of the constructions, leaving some cylindrical bodies that exceed the ground, which serve both as entrance to the building, and as patios of lights.
