Connections Spring Term 2014
International Saatchi Prize Winner Contemporary London art institution, The Saatchi Gallery, has selected Old Culfordian Harry Reidy as the winner of its prestigious Art Prize for Schools. As one of the largest international competitions in the world, the competition this year received over 16,000 entries from school pupils in 33 countries. The win rewards Culford’s art department with £10,000, as well as £2,000 for Harry to spend on art and computer equipment. Harry left Culford in 2013 and is currently studying at Kingswood College, South Africa. Inspired by the grounds of Culford School, Harry created the sculpture as part of his A-level studies at Culford whilst in the Upper Sixth last year.

Best concert you’ve ever performed: Always the last. What would you be doing if you weren’t a teacher: Anything to do with music, most probably composing. How did teaching start for you? To me, music and teaching go hand in hand. It was a natural path for me to get into teaching as one of my passions is getting people together and creating opportunities for people to share music. What piece of music would you like played at your funeral? The slow movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto K488. It is simply the most beautiful and sad piece of music I’ve ever heard. What is your favourite one liner joke? Woodworm found dead in brick. I like really bad jokes! What are you working on right now? We’re in the planning stages for a big Strings Festival in the Autumn term, and we also have The Stringcredibles coming in the Summer, which will be inspiring. Whose brain would you like to have had? Shakespeare’s. What is the world’s greatest work of art? Anything by Van Gogh. Is there an instrument you would like to be able to play? Definitely the violin. Which current musical group would you like to join? Take That. Gary Barlow is just a great guy – and about my age too… If you could have written any song, which would it be? One that would make me lots of money…..Lennon and McCartney’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band most probably. What is the single most valuable thing you have learned? Always look on the bright side of life. We welcome Helen Medlock as our new Head of Strings who comes to us from King’s School, Ely, with a wealth of experience.

Young Musicians Three Culford pupils have qualified for the final round of the West Suffolk Young Musician of the Year competition and will perform in the Finalists’ Concert at The Apex in July. The youngest of the pupils, Rosie Williams (U2) won the level one strings section of the heats and will perform her violin concerto at the finals. Hannah Littlechild (U5),
who triumphed in both the level three piano and level three strings sections, and Katie Hargreaves (U6), who came top in the level three voice section, will also perform at the concert and as level three winners, qualify to compete for the overall title of West Suffolk Young Musician of the Year.
A Taste of the Industry Up and coming band, Polar Collective, and V Festival opening act (2009), Bronwyn Cooper, gave pupils an insight into the music industry when they visited Culford to hold singing, performance and song-writing workshops as part of a county-wide schools tour. Following the workshop series, the best musical talent graced the stage of The Apex in Bury St Edmunds to perform to an audience
of more than 400 people for the West Suffolk Schools Rock and Pop Awards. Culford School’s King Blood, a threepiece Rock band made up of Aaron Powell and Robbie Day (both L6) and Old Culfordian Sam Hollis, put in an outstanding performance and were awarded the prize for Most Up and Coming Artists.
We Will Rock You! Culford Hall was once again rocking to the rafters this term for our annual Rock Concert, C2014. The concert, produced entirely by pupils, featured acts performing songs from artists as diverse as Arctic Monkeys, Pink, The Who and Chaka Khan. The show was enhanced by professional lighting, and pupils, parents and staff alike commented on the high standard of musical performance. C raises funds for Nordoff Robbins, a charity delivering music services and therapy that transform the lives of vulnerable people of all ages across the country, by giving them the ability and confidence to express themselves through music.
Other Spring highlights The Spring Concert featured groups, ensembles and choirs from all three schools. Culford’s Choral Society and Senior and Prep School Choirs presented Mozart’s Requiem to an audience of over 300 at St Mary’s Church, Bury St Edmunds. The Scholars’ Concert showcased the talents of our music scholars of all ages and was a real treat for those who attended. Held in the magnificent surroundings of the Billiard Room, the Prep School Soloists’ Concert
gave all pupils in the Prep School the chance to display the hard work from their instrumental and vocal lessons this term. The inaugural First Form Concert was an opportunity for parents to get a glimpse into what happens behind the scenes in our First Form Instrumental Programme and to marvel at the emerging talents of their children.
Pre-Prep Music Morning The music morning in March proved to be a wonderful display of the wide spectrum of music teaching that is going on at Pre-Prep. Mrs Combes directed the whole performance with recorder ensembles from PP2 and ocarina skills from PP1. PPR sang beautifully and the Nursery confidently performed Peter Rabbit. Other highlights included The Lost Sock Lament, Land of the Silver Birch, and everyone’s favourite, Spring Chicken.
Senior School House Concerts have also taken place this term and delivered a varied programme of evening entertainment, including video, drama, dance and a host of musical performances.

Scholars’ Focus
Baroness Cox with Head Girl Isabel Davies, Head Boy William Chapman and Alexia Glassbrook, Assistant Head of English.
Our Scholar’s programme, themed this year ‘Politics and ...’, is in full swing, attracting outstanding academics and fascinating speakers to Culford. Sixth Form Scholars were given an insight into a life investigating crime by Lee Presland (OC 1984 -1986), Senior Investigating Officer for the Metropolitan Police, who returned to Culford to give a seminar on the Politics of Policing Crime. Nick de Bois MP (OC 1967-1977) spoke with great authority and clarity about the symbiotic relationship between politics and the media, outlining how each relied on the other to go about its business. Nursery teacher Michelle Bainbridge has been awarded a distinction plus for her dissertation which focussed on children who use English as an additional language.
He also explored the nature of the public’s engagement with politics and considered why such apathy was evident in this country. He was challenged to defend his views by the pupils in some direct and penetrating questions which he did cogently and with flair.
Challenging Maths Recently the top sets from our Fourth and Fifth Forms sat the National Intermediate Mathematics challenge. They performed very well and gained 4 Gold, 13 Silver and 12 Bronze awards. The Gold winners were Jack Veitch, Haroon Majeed, Maria Alfaro and Martin Sharples (all U5). Jack scored the highest in the school and has been invited to sit a second round paper.
Pre-Prep Castles Day Weston Hall was transformed into a medieval castle this term as PP2 spent the day in Castle workshops run by History off the Page, kindly funded by the PrePrep PTA. Crafts in “the Bailey” included weaving, illuminating, and candle making. Some children were asked to catch food and cook it - the rat stew looked particularly appetising! Others were taught how to fire arrows before battle commenced. The day ended with a feast in the Great Hall with entertainment provided by the children.
Prep Roman Day
Pre-Prep Pirates Day
EPQ This year five A level pupils have taken part in the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ): Kate Balding (To what extent do changes in society dictate the development of the English language?), Isabella Anderson (Forest Schools), Annabel Muir (The relationship between HIV and the status
of women in Malawi), Ruth Friswell (Designing and creating effective study bedrooms for students) and Emily Hounsome (“The Poet,The Madman and The Lover”: what was Shakespeare’s representation of madness and mental health issues in the context of postreformation England?).
PP1 had a fabulous Pirate-themed day, creating characters with interesting habits such as not bathing or changing their socks, and composing exciting pirate adventure stories. They took to the high seas in their class ship, The Good Ship Lollipop, and read books in the Pirate Reading Cove. Everyone had fun painting pirate faces on paper plates, digging for treasure, doing pirate exercises and making treasure chest snacks!
How Hating Harvard Made Me Successful Meg Rosoff, prize winning author of Just In Case (2007 CILIP Carnegie Medal), What I Was and The Bride’s Farewell, led a writing workshop and spoke entertainingly to Fifth Form pupils about her life – from hating Harvard, to her less than successful career in advertising, beginning writing in her forties and how your decisions can change the course of your life completely.
Medical Society Culford’s Medical Society, open to U5 and 6F pupils, offers an extracurricular programme for pupils interested in medically related vocations through a series of after school activities and talks. During January, pupils dissected and navigated their way around a pluck of pig organs, relating what was seen to what is
Chinese New Year at Nursery Our nursery children celebrated Chinese New Year with an array of themed activities. The story of ‘The Race’ was read, and children heard how and why each year is named after an animal. Our intrepid group enthusiastically tasted noodles, tried using chopsticks, explored Chinese calligraphy and learned how to say ‘Happy New Year’ in Cantonese. This was followed by dragon dancing and, to honour the year of the horse, imitating horses and making our own horses to race around the garden!
taught in A level Biology and taking their learning a step further where possible. The heart and lungs were the main focus. The picture shows pupils studying the trachea as it branches into the primary bronchi at a place called the carina which, when touched, triggers the cough reflex, though thankfully not in our dead pig!

Charities
High-Flying Ciara The Road to Malawi Every year our Lower Sixth undertake a host of fundraising ventures to ensure a successful and often life-changing trip to Malawi. This term, the 2014 group presented well-researched projects to an appreciative audience in the Billiard Room. Funding from The Rosetta Trust will provide £1,800 for three borehole recovery projects, £1,000 for the Liwonde National Park Wildlife Conservation project, £1,000 for teaching materials as part of the Charchar Educational chest project, and £3,000 for the construction of new toilet facilities at Good News Orphanage. Fund-raising so far has raised £10,000 for this summer’s work experience and projects, and continues with a book sale in the library and concert in the May half-term. All those participating would like to say a big thank you for the continued immense support of the Culford community for our much needed work in Malawi.
As part of her personal £2,000 fundraising target for the Malawi trip, Ciara Morrell (L6) bravely decided to take on a solo sky dive from 13,500ft. She made the leap in February at Beccles Airfield, raising £1,800. She said the jump was ‘an amazing experience’
despite shouting ‘I do not want to do this’ as she leapt from the plane. If you haven’t already donated to the Malawi fund and would like to support our L6 in this amazing challenge, please contact the Senior School Reception.Your support would be greatly appreciated.
Sponsored Row for SSAAFA Ross Houghton (U6) and Alex Harley (L6), now known as The 24hr Boys, organised (and stayed up for the duration of) a 24-hour rowing challenge in aid of SSAFA, a charity offering lifelong support for our forces personnel and their families. 100 Edwards’ boys, an Assistant Housemaster, a Housemaster and a Matron rowed 294 kilometres between them, more than double their original target, raising over £500 for the charity.
Sporting Wacky Socks for Charity Our Pre-Prep and Nursery pupils sported their wackiest socks and held a charity bake-off in order to raise £83.60 for Sport Relief.

Drama Jack and the Beanstalk The musical based upon Roald Dahl’s reimagining of Jack and the Beanstalk was an ideal choice for the inaugural Second Form Production. It gave every child in Lower and Upper Second the chance to have a fantastic time performing the catchy songs and pithy - if rather revolting - lines. The whole cast rose to the occasion, singing with confidence and
conveying a range of dramatic moods effectively. Dressed as farmyard animals, market traders and farmers, they looked a picture and captured little details of their characters convincingly. This fun and pacey pantomime was over all too soon but memories of the production will abide for those who were fortunate enough to see it or take part.
Cabaret Director of Drama Maria Kane’s swansong production of Cabaret proved a fitting celebration of her work. The show invited the audience to engage, drew bold performances from an excellent but inclusive cast, ensured that set changes and technical elements ran smoothly and interpreted the show in a way that was both classic and creative. The whole cast acquitted themselves superbly, especially in the jarring finales to each act when the beguiling Tomorrow Belongs to Me suggests a society sleepwalking its way towards a violent awakening. Whether goosestepping in the kick lines or tapping out a tune, the company coped well with Heidi Stubbings’ demanding but well-judged choreography. A stark performance of the discordant closing sequence suggested the approach of war particularly movingly.
Pre-Prep Speech and Drama week PP1 immersed themselves in a variety of activities for S&D week: learning and reciting individual poems; working on developing their performance skills; and improving their use of expression. PP1 performed a wonderful group rendition of The Boneyard Rap in assembly and everyone particularly enjoyed acting out The Funky Chicken routine!

Sport Girls Pre-Seeded to National Finals Culford’s girls’ tennis team have been pre-seeded to the National Championship Tennis Finals taking place in Sheffield during July. This is the first time a Culford team has gone straight to the finals without needing to qualify. Four teams in each event are pre-seeded, based on the British Tennis Ratings of the top four nominated players within each team. Culford’s squad will consist of: Maria Andrews (U5), Emily John (L6), Lizzie Pam (L5), Kira Reuter (U3) and Hannah Vickers (U5). Prep pupil Laurie Cruickshank (U2) was given direct acceptance by the LTA into the Grade 2 10U National Tour Event in February. The LTA Staged Winter National Tour is the top level of winter competition for juniors in Great Britain for age groups 9U through to 18U.
U16 Hockey Boys in UK’s Top Ten Teams Culford’s U16 boys’ hockey squad are ranked as a top 10 hockey side in the country after finishing as runners up in the eastern round of the Boys’ Schools National Cup Competition. The team also earned the chance to make it to the national finals for only the third time in the school’s history. Held at Culford, the national playoff match saw Guildford progress through to the finals but nevertheless secures Culford’s hockey team as ‘one to watch’ for the future.
LTA Best Tennis School Culford has been named the county’s Best Tennis School by the Suffolk Schools Tennis Association. The award was presented to David Hall at the association’s AGM which was held at Ipswich Sports Club during February.
Mini Tennis Maximum Success Culford Sports and Tennis Centre’s Mini Tennis Teams have had success in the Junior Winter League Finals, with both the Red (ages 5-7) and Orange (ages 8-9) teams winning their respective finals.
Tom Trains with GB Ski Lucy’s England Call-Up Senior School pupil Lucy Holder (U5) has been selected to represent England in the U16 England hockey squad of 22 players. Lucy will be competing in training camps held at the English Institute of Sport at Lilleshall and Bisham Abbey training grounds, and will play for England in competitive matches against other European nations, culminating in the Four Nations Cup, to be held in August this year, where she will play alongside the best players from Germany, Holland, and Spain.

Thomas Hudson (U3) is currently in Italy with the British Ski Academy. He is training with the GB squad for 3-4 weeks in all disciplines (Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super G) in preparation for the British Championships in Meribel from 8th April. The photograph shows Tom competing for Culford in the Equity Interschools Slalom race in which he finished a creditable 6th (in the medals) out of 62 competitors; a fantastic performance considering he has recently been resting due to a broken collar bone.
Bath Cup at London’s Olympic Park Aquatic Centre Six of Culford’s swimmers, Emma Lees (L5), Emily Wood (L5), Hannah Brecknell (F4), Olivia Nicolai (F4), Annabel Heywood (F4) and ChloeJeane Parsley (L3), participated in this year’s prestigious Bath Cup swimming competition, held in the Aquatic Centre at London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. The competition, the first the pool had hosted since the Paralympic Games, is open by invitation only to the best squads from independent schools across Great Britain. It is the first time Culford has taken part and the girls’ nerves were matched only by their excitement at the prospect of racing against some of the fastest swimmers in the country.
Emma, Emily, Olivia and Hannah participated in the 4x50m freestyle relay and the medley relay, putting in two absolutely fantastic performances during their heats against over1000 swimmers that were taking part to qualify for the A final in both events. In the freestyle relay final, Culford finished just outside the medals by 0.22 of a second with a highly commendable 4th place finish in 1:56.87. The medley relay final saw the girls finish just outside their heat time, swimming a superb race to finish in 5th position.
Other Spring highlights
In January, Culford hosted the Suffolk Schools Cross Country B Race, with over 300 youngsters from across the county taking part. The top eight runners were automatically selected to compete in the Anglian Schools Competition for the Suffolk Schools Cross Country team. Charlie Wakefield (U2), pictured above, did very well to come 4th in the minor boys’ race, as he had been recovering from an injury. Over the Christmas holiday, Lucy Taylor (PP2) passed her Level 6 ski award, qualifying her to ski on any
slope. She had to show perfect control in any snow condition, including vertical side slipping, parallel step turns, good posture, pole planting, swing to the hill, mogul skiing and leave carve marks through several linked turns as well as make advanced manoeuvres very quickly.
Our Pre-Prep Netballers continue to train hard every Thursday after school. They are learning to work well as a team and their coach, Mrs Butcher, is very impressed with their developing netball skills.
U9 Rugby Festival Prep School hosted an U9 A and B rugby team competition during March, welcoming nine teams and over a hundred players to the school. The A team competiton saw five teams from across the region compete in some tense matches, with Finborough School triumphing to take home the trophy. In the B team competition, four teams were pitted against each other and yet again, showcased some fantastic play. Barnardiston Hall claimed first place with Culford finishing as runner up.
Players in Demand Culford’s rugby players boast an impressive CV of recent appearances
between them, including England U16 squad member Tristan Rawcliffe, Lambs squad member Juyin Oluweyami, London & South-East Clubs and Schools squad member Toby White and Kenyan international Malcolm Onsando (all U6).
Reeds 7s Winners Culford Senior School’s rugby players triumphed at the prestigious Reed’s School Sevens tournament, winning the all Eastern Counties final v Felsted School. Setting aside bad memories of conceding a four try lead over Felsted in the group stages, Culford established an early lead, and despite brave attempts from Felsted to repeat their comeback display of the earlier stages, Culford’s players furthered their lead, winning the final 36-24.

Trips & Activities Messing about on the River The Pre-Prep’s first residential trip was a resounding success. 26 PP2 children and four members of staff spent a fun-filled and action-packed three days at Whitwell Hall in Norfolk. Amazing team-work and organisational skills were displayed by the children who had enormous fun in all the activities including orienteering, tracking and mini beast hunting. The group even set about making boats and, on the final morning, strolled down to the river to race them. There was great competition, lots of capsizing and some sticking in the mud before the winning boat crossed the finishing line!
How Green is Britain? Children in Lower 1st enjoyed a day of weather watching and eco-friendly activities at the Green Britain Centre in Swaffham. They all made it up the 305 steps to the top of a 60m wind turbine to see amazing views and watch the clouds rolling in. They learnt about different forms of energy and investigated making electricity using wind-turbine models. Included in the trip was a recycling game in which they sorted materials into buckets from a conveyor belt including using a magnet to find steel or aluminium. The children listened with interest as they were shown different types of electrical and wind-powered vehicles. It was a fascinating day for all reinforcing the geography and science topics this half-term.
Geography Trip Recently 23 L6 geography pupils travelled to North Yorkshire for their unit 2 fieldwork and research. After a lovely evening at the Cranedale Centre in Kirby Grindalythe they travelled to Scarborough to assess the success of rebranding in the seaside town. A transect down the high street, fish and chips on the harbour and a walk around The Sands enabled pupils to evaluate the spatial patterns of rebranding. The trip culminated in a drive through the Vale of Pickering followed by walking a transect from Old Malton, along the River Derwent, assessing the risk of flooding in the area. The fantastic teaching of the Cranedale staff, enthusiastic Culford pupils and a weekend of sunshine resulted in a great field trip.

PPR Visit RAF Lakenheath Our Reception group visited RAF Lakenheath to learn more about birds and machines of flight. The children met several birds of prey that are used for bird scaring, including a 27 year old owl called Twinkle and a 7 month old bald eagle. The children watched in amazement as the busy airfield was used by jets and helicopters, before being shown the equipment that pilots must wear when flying. They were able to try on helmets and life vests, and look through night vision goggles. The highlight of the day, for both children and teachers, was being allowed to sit in the cockpit of an F15 fighter jet alongside the pilots; an incredible and unique experience for them all.
Female Captain Inspects CCF This year’s inspection was taken by Group Captain Clare Walton of the Royal College of Defense Studies. The inspection was followed by a drill competition and after lunch an Air Rifle competition, Obstacle Course, and First Aid and Hostage Rescue displays. Minden Platoon were the overall winners. The day concluded with a formal Mess Dinner in Culford Hall enjoyed by over 80 parents, pupils and invited guests.
Model Pupil India Thompson (U5) was selected from over 250 entrants to model for Velvet magazine’s AW13 Fashion Show, held in aid of Niamh Henry’s Fairy Wish Fund which raises money for children’s wards at West Suffolk and Addenbrooke’s Hospitals.
Lottie Wins Ladies’ Open
OC Artist Shares Her Talent
Lottie Ingleton (L6) was cheered on by her Culford School friends and delighted parents as she rode to victory in the Ladies’ Open at Ampton Point to Point. Riding a horse owned and trained by her parents, she trailed the leading pair turning into the home straight, but drove the horse forward to win by a neck and a half length. It was the first success in the saddle for Lottie on King Du Berlais.
Senior School pupils were treated to an art workshop with talented artist and Old Culfordian Harriet Johnson (1995-2005), in which they learnt about multi-textural work and expressive use of paint. Harriet conducted the workshop prior to holding an exhibition in the newly opened Foundation Art Gallery along with fellow artist Madeline Churchill. Harriet’s works included multi-textural seascape paintings of her favourite places in Cornwall, where her use of paint mimics the movement of the sea. The majority of work was sold during a Private View with 10% of the selling price being generously donated by the artists towards The Campaign for Culford, specificially to development work in the Art Department. You can find out more about the campaign by visiting www.culford.co.uk/foundation.
