Welcome to Prep School Prize Giving Honoured guests,

I am delighted to welcome you to our Annual Prize Giving for 2014/15.

I do hope that you enjoy this very special day when we celebrate the achievements of all our pupils and, in particular, our prize winners and all the children for whom this may be their last day at the Prep School. For those children and families who are leaving us today, I hope that you will look back on the years you have spent with us with fondness and will treasure many highlights as the next phase of your education begins. My personal thanks go to all our pupils who make our lives so rewarding; my Common Room and I genuinely delight in all the children’s achievements celebrated here today and throughout the year. It gives me great pleasure to welcome our Guest of Honour, Sarah Matthias. We have known each other for some time through her son James, who was in my boarding House when I was a Housemaster at Culford Senior School.

Sarah is an Old Culfordian (1970-1976) who went on to study Law at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, and became a Barrister. From there she turned her considerable talents to writing children’s books and had a number successfully published from 2006 onwards. In fact, we are her first public appearance for some time, Sarah having recently met her latest publishing deadlines. Some of her books are already in our library and I am sure those due for imminent release will also find their way into both the Prep School library and the wonderful new library scheduled to open in September.

Finally, I hope you all enjoy this special day. With my very best wishes to you for a wonderful summer,

Mike Schofield BEd Headmaster, Culford Prep School

Each year we hold a competition for the children to create a cover for Th’inkwell, the Prep School’s annual magazine. This year’s cover design winners are shown by year group above. As the Prep School has so much news to celebrate and share across the year, in future we have decided to produce a Prep School version of The Culfordian which will be published later this year.

Celebration Day: 22 May 2015 Culford Prep School parents and pupils enjoyed an exciting last day before the half term holidays at their annual Academic and Creative Arts Celebration Day. Parents and guardians were invited to join their children for the day, taking part in activities such as ‘Have a Go Lessons’ in art and science and ‘The BIG Bible Quiz’ in religious studies. They were also given the opportunity to see first-hand what the pupils have been learning throughout the year in a range of subjects such as English, geography and history, by visiting their classrooms and viewing some of the children’s work. The children showcased their creative abilities and entertained everyone throughout the afternoon by acting, singing and dancing in several performances. Lower and Upper First children worked in small groups to write and deliver their own puppet shows using carefully crafted wooden spoon characters. The audience were captivated by their inventive stories, animated delivery and fantastic puppets. In the afternoon, all the children took part in a Music Showcase and Workshop. Each year group worked together to perform a song with some also playing musical instruments. The day finished with all parents, pupils and staff enjoying afternoon tea in the sunshine.
