Sixth Form Enrichment Programme

At Culford, we firmly believe that education should be challenging, enriching and fun. This is especially true in the Sixth Form where learning should extend way beyond the confines of the classroom. Being in the Sixth Form at Culford is a very special time; students become young adults and role models within a large and supportive community. Being a role model carries with it responsibility, but also the opportunity to have a positive impact on others. We want our Sixth Formers to seize this opportunity and to fully explore and extend their potential, developing confidence and personal skills such as leadership, teamwork and resilience. Our Enrichment Programme is exciting and diverse and it enables all our Sixth Formers to significantly develop their talents and excel in a wide range of activities. Throughout the year there are a series of conferences and seminars, ranging from three day residential leadership programmes to shorter courses developing a whole range of life skills. In addition, all Sixth Formers are expected to lead activities for younger members of the school – perhaps running a sports club or teaching a language. Students also run their own active social scene, arranging parties and lavish Balls through the year. By getting fully involved, students should leave Culford as confident and independent young adults, equipped and ready for the challenges ahead.

Getting Involved As well as enrichment afternoons and termly conferences, there are many ways that Sixth Form pupils can develop their talents. Sixth Form Committee Sixth Formers are encouraged to get involved in the running of the Sixth Form itself. This includes organising social events at their own Paddy & Scott’s coffee shop, or academic and careers events in the dedicated Sixth Form mezzanine in the library. School Leadership As well as prefect roles, all Sixth Formers are encouraged to develop leadership skills by running clubs and societies for other pupils and by mentoring pupils lower down the school. There are also many opportunities to lead the running of charity events such as fashion shows and concerts. The Headmaster’s Leadership Awards recognise significant individual and group leadership. Sixth Form Activities A number of our weekday and weekend activities are for the Sixth Form only. These are led largely by the Sixth Form themselves and driven by the passions and interests of the students concerned: from self-defence training to cookery courses.

Open University Modules We have teamed up with the OU to offer academically gifted students the chance to study a wide range of undergraduate modules at first year degree level alongside their A Levels. Working at this level builds confidence, encourages independent learning and, importantly, it differentiates pupils competing for university places. Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) The EPQ is a self-directed project where pupils are free to choose their own area of study. It is worth 50% of an A level and is popular with universities as it exemplifies the initiative, creativity and confident independence of the learner. Malawi Expedition Every summer holiday, pupils entering the Upper Sixth are given the opportunity to plan and execute an overseas expedition to Malawi, including a significant element of community work. Staff are available to support students but the planning, including the fundraising, is the responsibility of the students themselves.
