Different Holidays Around the World It’s not just Christmas Season Jordan Nash, Staff Writer
As the weather starts getting colder and the year reaches an end, bright lights, colorfully decorated trees, and merry songs signal the beginning of the holiday season. In our part of the world, the most commonly celebrated holiday is Christmas, and because Christmas is such a big deal we often think of this time of year as “Christmas Season” and forget all the many other holidays that are celebrated at the same time. Even if we don’t always think of them, there are many other holidays with their own unique meanings and traditions that are celebrated this time of year. One of these holidays celebrated this time of year that you may have heard of is Hanukkah. Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a Jewish celebration that normally begins on Kislev 25 (normally in December) and continues for eight days. It celebrates the miracle of only a day’s supply of oil lasting eight days when it was needed most after a hard-won battle. Hanukkah is a joyous festival that lacks many work restrictions, but there are still many different religious and non-religious customs included in the celebration of Hanukkah. One of the most important traditions is the lighting of the menorah each evening. The Menorah is a candelabra with nine branches: one for each candle per night and one for the shammash (servant) candle. On the first evening of the celebra-
tion, the first candle is lit, and each night after one candle is lit and a blessing is given until all the candles are ablaze on the final evening. Hanukkah also has other religious traditions such as the daily reading of Scripture, recitation of some of the Psalms, almsgiving, and singing of a special hymn. In some synagogues and homes The Scroll of Antiochus, an early medieval account of Hanukkah, is read aloud. Along with daily prayers, thanks are offered to God for the deliverance of evil into the hands of the good and the strong into the hands of the weak. In addition to the religious traditions, Hanukkah also includes non-religious traditions. Potato pancakes (latkes), doughnuts (sufganiyot), and other treats fried in oil (recalling the miracle of the oil) are enjoyed throughout the holiday. Gifts of money and presents are given to children, often in the form of chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil. Games, such as card games and a children’s game with a dreidel, a small spinning top. are also common during the celebration. Another holiday that you might have heard of celebrated around Christmas is Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa takes place primarily in the United States from December 26 to January 1; it is celebrated to affirm African family and social values. The name and the celebration were created in 1966 by Mulana Karenga, a professor of Africana studies at California
State University. Although Kwanzaa is primarily an African American holiday, it is also celebrated in the Caribbean and other countries where there are large numbers of African descendants. There are seven principles of Kwanzaa (unity, self-determination, collective responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith) and each day of the celebration is dedicated to one of these principles. The number seven reappears as there are seven symbols for the holiday: fruits, vegetables, and nuts; a straw mat; a candleholder; ears of corn; gifts; a communal cup (symbolizing unity); and seven red, green, and black candles, symbolizing the seven principles. Similar to Hanukkah, each day of the celebration the family comes together to light a candle in the kinara (candleholder); at this time, they also discuss the principle for the day. On December 31, a community feast called the karamu is held in which many families join in; some participants wear traditional African clothing for the festivities. One final holiday that is celebrated around Christmas is Winter Solstice. This day occurs on December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere, and while many of us may only recognize this day as the day with the shortest daylight hours and longest night, there are many different celebrations for this day in many different cultures. Cullman and German Traditions in Cullman A look into the holiday season in Cullman Christen Sorrow, Editor in Chief Christmas, a time where we celebrate giving back to the community and the real reason for the season. In Cullman, Alabama, we have some wonderful traditions we do here. Our beginning of the Christmas season kicked off with the Christmas Open House, which was held in the Warehouse District. There are plenty of fun activities you can do with your family as well as getting some Christmas shopping done. Following the open house, you can find many places to go to look at Christmas lights, a popular spot for most families would include Sportsmans Lake. The Christmas parade is
something very fun for Cullman as well, we do this parade each year for the tree lighting. This is very popular for families because special guests like Santa and his elves come to see the kids of Cullman. The parade and tree lighting bring families from all over Cullman County together for the holidays, and it’s such a great experience. Going back to downtown Cullman, as of 2 years ago, our German Christmas pyramid. Our Christmas pyramid, which is known as the Weihnachtspyramide, is a German tradition that we incorporate into our other traditions here in Cullman. The beautiful
30ft tall wooden centerpiece has an incredible mark on Cullman. The new tradition started in 2019. Our German heritage has brought us many beautiful things to this town, including this one thing specifically. The pyramid stands 6 tiers tall and has Founder, John G. Cullman, on the sky high centerpiece. These are just some of the things we have here in Cullman to kick off the season, If you have time, drive the street’s of Cullman Historic District to see homes decorated for the season Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Hilight Staff.
Arizona celebrate the winter solstice with Soyal. There are many ceremonies and rituals including purification, dancing, and sometimes gift-giving. They craft prayer sticks to be used for various blessings and other rituals. Kachinas, or protective spirits, are welcomed from the mountains during this time. In Iran, the Persian festival Yalda has celebrated the winter solstice since ancient times. It marks the last day of the Persian month of Azar and is traditionally viewed as the victory of light over dark. This festival is celebrated with special foods like nuts and pomegranates, and some families stay awake all night to welcome the morning sun. Dong Zhi in China is another important festival celebrated around the Winter Solstice. Families get together to celebrate the previous year. They enjoy special foods such as tang yuan and time to reflect on the year together. As you can see, there are many different holidays other than Christmas celebrated this time of year. While each of these different holidays has its own unique traditions, one common theme throughout all of these is taking the time to celebrate together and spend time with those we love most. So, no matter what holiday you may celebrate, enjoy the special time this holiday with those you love celebrating the things that mean the most to you.

A short overview of Maya Angelou’s life Elley Atchison, Staff Writer Harriet Tubman, Michelle Obama, Malala Yousafza, Frida Kahlo, and Ruth Badar Badar Ginsburg. All remarkable women who have greatly influenced society. One woman less frequently talked about is the extraordinary Maya Angelou. Through her lifetime, Maya Angelou attained unobtainable things and achieved things despite tremendous hardship. Maya began her life in St.Louis, Missouri, but later had her life transformed when her mother dropped Maya and her brother, Bailey, off at Stamps, Arkansas, where Maya’s grandmother lived. In the small, segregated town in Stamps, Maya received a formal education. To be black and a woman at this time, it was exceedingly rare to attain thorough schooling. By staying attentive during school, Maya gained exponential knowledge and grew a love for wisdom. Maya stayed at Stamps for a substantial time of her childhood but was abruptly moved by her mother one day and taken to California. At this time, Maya experienced things she wasn’t used to under the guidance of her grandmother at Stamps. When in California, Maya was sexually assaulted by her mother’s boyfriend. After some time, Maya’s mother found out about the assault and was mortified. Maya later testified in court against her mother’s boyfriend, which eventually led him to prison. Because he was sentenced to time in prison, Maya felt incredibly guilty. She later said that she thought her voice hurt people. Maya did not speak for the next six years. Later in her life, Maya Angelou moved to the big city of San Francisco with her mother and brother. She had ambitious dreams and would use her tenacity to achieve them. One of these dreams was to be a conductor on one of the streetcars zipping through San Francisco. The thing about this dream was it had never been done before by a woman or a black person. However, Maya Angelou had one thing the others did not: persistence. Maya Angelou sat at the streetcar office every day until they let her be the first-ever black woman to run a streetcar in San Francisco. Maya was not only ambitious about her personal goals, but she was ambitious about the goals of civil rights, too. In May of 1964, Maya Angelou lived in Ghana. In this country, black people had sig-
nificant roles and the country, and it thrived. This country had equality, while America had hardly any. Malcolm X heard that Maya Angelou had moved there, and went to pay her a visit. At this time, he formally asked if she would accompany him in his work for civil rights; she accepted. Tragically, shortly after Maya had returned to the United States, Malcolm X was assassinated. Maya later wrote her first response to this news, saying, “In seconds I was outside in the clear air. Bleakness and grief welled up in me, and I started to cry” (A Song Flung Up To Heaven, 2002). In 1960, Maya Angelou was asked by Martin Luther King to be the coordinator of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. She humbly accepted, packed her things, and moved to New York City. This job entailed raising funds for the conference and spreading awareness of what it stood for. Maya learned a great amount during this experience and grew a strong relationship with Martin Luther King. What has defined Maya Angelou has been her talent to express herself through literature. In 1969, Angelou published her first book called I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. This book was an autobiography that was also filled with poems. Many adored this book, but like all published items, it took some criticism as well. All in all, Maya Angelou’s book had tremendous success. In Maya Angelou’s lifetime, she learned six languages, published seven autobiographies, became a professor, and was an authentic person. She overcame situations that would have broken others. Maya Angelou was truly a “phenomenal woman.”

The free bird leaps on the back of the win and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wings in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky. But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing. Maya Angelou with her book “I Know Why Caged Birds Sing.”
The caged bird sings with fearful trill of the things unknown but longed for still and is tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom The free bird thinks of another breeze an the trade winds soft through the sighing trees and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn and he names the sky his own. But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing

The Other Side of Christmas
Taking a moment to appreciate the little things. Areli Leon, Advertising Editor Gifts, family, and joy can all be things associated with Christmas. Conversely, this can also be accompanied with stress, loneliness, and depression. In less fortunate families, children might be excitedly writing a letter for Santa or wondering whether they’ll be able to receive any gifts at all. Likewise, their parents are filled with stress in order to try and ration so that they can make Christmas as normal as possible for their families. Growing up, as students return from Christmas break, no one hesitates to ask what gifts others received for the holidays. But have you ever thought of those people who stay quiet during those enthusiastic conversations?
The truth is, many people speak about being grateful for everything during the holidays, but most don’t realize just how much they have to be thankful for. In a society that has been absorbed by social media, it is easy for people to pretend like their Christmas break was wonderful; unfortunately, that’s not always the case. Although in a location like Cullman, we are not always used to being exposed to those who are less fortunate, that does not mean there are none. Although most might not be experiencing poverty like it is often seen in large cities like Birmingham and Atlanta, there are still a large portion of people who struggle to make ends meet. These
families work hard to keep wtheir household stable, which is very important in a place like Cullman, which I recently found out has no homeless shelters. Therefore, parents and guardians work hard each day to help support their families. In addition, as Christmas approaches, they also want to make sure their family has a special time and experiences the spirit of Christmas no matter their situation. This can be very difficult for parents, as they would have to work very hard to provide this for their family. Parents have to develop tight budgets throughout the holidays in order to be able to afford dinner and gifts for their children. Planning get togethers like these are already filled
with stress, it is 10 times worse having to figure out if you’ll be able to provide what is needed to pull these events together. All in all, it is very important to reflect upon the various privileges we have, because even though it may not seem like it, there are many people in our community who are struggling to attain the same things we often take for granted.

Top 5 Conspiracies to End the Year
Conspiracies from the end of 2020 and through 2021 Alecia Scott, Staff Writer
During 2020 and 2021, many conspiracy theories have sparked . These include anything and everything during the Biden presidency, Travis Scott, and Covid-19 vaccinations. Here are five of the wildest, most debated conspiracy theories of 2020 and 2021. At #5 is the 5-G conspiracy. This happened at the end of last year, but it carried over to this year. The conspiracy states that Covid-19 vaccinations have microchips in them, and 5-G is being used with the micro-chips to melt our brains. Not actually; what it actually says is that the chips and the 5-G power lines are tracking all of us, and the boosters are being used to make us easier to manipulate. I find this theory to be really interesting, but it realistically has no factual standing, the first part at least. The government, or Bill Gates, or whoever does not need microchips to track you. You carry around a chip with you everywhere you go, it’s called a phone. The brain-melt thing is mildly more understandable. This theory is based on the idea that all people are “sheeple” and can be easily controlled to get the vaccine anyway. If people are already “sheeple,” what would the vaccines further do to the already “easily manipulated” people? #4 was very big when it happened. In February, Texas suffered a severe winter storm, and they went dark.
Many of the citizens did not have power or heat. This is Joe Biden’s Dark Winter. Many Facebook users stated that Joe Biden caused the storm as “warfare,” and he used “jet streams” to do it. The conspiracy entails, jet streams were used to seed the clouds to result in a large winter storm. Let’s think this through. Jet streams somehow seeded the clouds with what? Megasnow? That seems illogical. Weather can not be altered in the way stated in the post, but many people took it and ran with it. I think it is very interesting how far people will take conspiracies.
#3 is the Capitol Riot Conspiracy. Who did it? That is what these conspiracies are supposed to “prove.” The first states that the left-wing sent in “spies” to make the right-wing look bad. The second says that Trump sent in his followers to make the inauguration as difficult as possible, and to wreak havoc on the Capitol. The third is questionably the most interesting: Qanon. Each idea is basically the same thing. One side did it to make the other
look bad. The Qanon theory, however, is a little bit more complex. The theory states that Qanon was going to go in and overthrow the government to get Trump back in office. The whole theory of Qanon is insane, but that is an article for another day. The capitol insurrection was awful, and it set an awful start to the year. There is no one to blame, the people acted on their own volition, and they will be punished for what they did. #2 is a quick overview of who is to blame for Qanon. Many people believe the creator of 8-chan is responsible for Qanon, and he himself is Q. Q is the leader of a cult-like community that is extremely right-winged. I am not going to get political, but the whole point of Q is to convince as many people as possible that the progressives are baby-eating, satanic monsters. I mean this literally, one of the first conspiracy theories produced by Q was that in the basement of a pizzeria was a satanic cult that gathered there to eat babies. The cult members were progressive influencers that frequented the restaurant. It seems really far-fetched but people believed it. Two boys went in and shot the place up. It was a tragedy. If you want to learn further on this topic, there is a great docu-series on HBO Max. #1 is very current. Travis Scott is
supposedly doing a satanic ritual to live longer. In Houston, 58,000 people gathered to hear Travis Scott. Things got out of control and 8 people died. The ages ranged 14 to 27. It was awful. He issued an apology and many people didn’t believe him. That is when a conspiracy started to unfold. The theorists stated that the Astroworld concert had many similarities to a popular satanic ritual that used other people’s death to live longer. People made the connection, and since then, Travis Scott hasn’t made any statements about it. All people can do is wonder.

I think a run down of the year through conspiracies would give a different perspective. If you think any of these theories are true, I am glad you have such an open mind. If you don’t, maybe you are rational, or maybe you are doing what they want you to think. In either case, examine facts on your own, ask questions, and make your own conclusions.

FEATURES The Evolution of Christmas Toys
7
And how children’s expectations have changed Abbie Allison and Jordan Nash, Staff Writers Christmas has been a widely celebrated holiday since the 9th century, and the practice of giving gifts to family members has been a well-established part of this celebration since the end of the 18th century. As centuries passed and society grew, these gift-giving elements combined with legends surrounding Santa Claus. As Santa became known as a kind protector of children, it became customary to give children small toys to celebrate the Christmas holiday. Dolls, building blocks, stuffed animals, and board games were some of the popular gifts given during these earliest Christmas celebrations. By the end of the 1900s, department stores had infiltrated cities around the world, giving families easy access to new toys that they could purchase for their children. The specific toys that kids add to their written Christmas lists might have changed from year to year, but their excitement is always there no matter what. Kids from all different generations have been brought up with several different toys and uses for them. Throughout the years, the popularity of the Barbie doll has remained the same with kids of
all ages loving them. Typically, in the past centuries kids wanted the basic toys such as toy trains, cars, and animals and even real dolls. This enormous difference changed because kids separated into different styles and were able to transition into the modern world. From G.I. Joe dolls to Hot Wheels to even Monster High dolls and technology, kids have always wanted that one special gift. Toys like the Furby were always popular until recently and many new toys are constantly still being invented. The history of toys is one that is rich and seems to always change with its environment. As history is being reinvented and created, toys will never be unimagined. Along with the changes of toys over the years, Christmas in our society and children’s expectations surrounding Christmas have changed greatly. One of the biggest changes regarding Christmas in our society is how commercialized the holiday has become. During the holiday season, there are almost no stores lacking Christmas decorations or music, and all over TV, social media, radio, and the internet, we see advertisements for
the best gifts for this holiday season and special Christmas deals. In addition to Christmas becoming more commercialized, technology has advanced very quickly in the past few years, and toys are becoming more complex. In addition to this, video games, iPads, cell phones, computers, and many other high price items have become a part of many children’s Christmas wish lists. Not only do adults see all the advertisements with the newest technology and the biggest best toys, but children see these things too. Children are exposed to many more forms of media than they used to be which means they are exposed to more advertisements than they used to be. In these advertisements, they see the latest toys that “every kid loves” and “must have” this holiday season. Being exposed to these advertisements causes children to want these things more; they are being convinced that this is what everyone is getting, so they must have it too. When children are convinced that every kid is getting this new amazing thing, then they begin to expect that they should receive it too and their expectations are changed.
Children have always wanted and expected the latest toys that they assume all their friends are also going to get for Christmas, but with the increase in technology and expensive gifts, they have come to expect more in terms of price. The most popular toys that children want are the most expensive and advanced toys much of the time. Each year these toys are getting bigger and better and constantly changing to where many kids are not satisfied with what they may have received.
Santa In Other Countries
How Santa is viewed around the world
Samantha Johnson, Staff Writer The United States of America is by far not the only country to have Santa Claus. However, we are one of the only countries to view Santa as a big, fat man in a red suit riding a sleigh with flying reindeer. In different parts of the world dear old Saint Nick goes by different names, dresses differently, has different modes of transportation, and even comes in all shapes and sizes. Everyone knows the Santa that America sees. Fat man, long white beard, big red suit, sleigh pulled by magical flying reindeer, sweet old Mrs. Claus for a wife. Most people even know the Catholic origin, Saint Nicholas, who threw money into the window of a poor family’s home on December 6th, which is now known as Saint Nicholas Feast Day. Now, how about learning a little about Santa around the globe. Germany: In Germany children leave out boots on the night of December 5th to 6th, during the night Nikolaus, or Santa, leaves either gifts or coal in the boot and checks to see if the children have been
behaving.
Sweden and Denmark: In
Sweden Santa is called Jultomten and is seen as a gnome whose sled is pulled by Julbocker, or the goats of Thor, the god of thunder. He dresses in red and carries a large pack on his back. In Denmark he is called Julemanden. He carries a pack there too and dresses in red, but he has reindeer and elves, similar to the American Santa. Netherlands: In the Netherlands Sinterklaasavond, St. Nicholas Eve, is much more important than Christmas. On this night, December 5th, Sinterklaas brings gifts to children who have been good all year. Sinterklaas dresses in a red bishop’s dress and rides a white horse from rooftop to rooftop delivering presents with the help of small people whose faces are black as soot, wearing colorful morish dresses. Austria and Switzerland: In Austria and Switzerland Christkindl delivers gifts. In some towns Christkindl is a beautiful girl angel
who is sent from heaven to give gifts. France: In France, Pere Noel, or Father Christmas, gives gifts to children on Christmas eve. Rather than wearing a Santa hat Pere Noel wears a red cloak trimmed with white fur. He does not leave gifts under the tree for Christmas morning but rather gives gifts to children who have been good after mass on Christmas Eve. There are a few other small differences between Pere Noel and Santa, but he is mostly like the American version of Santa Claus in his dress and presents. Australia: Perhaps the funniest of Santa’s is Australia’s version of Santa. In Australia it is summer at Christmas time, so instead of a fleecy red suit, Santa wears board shorts and rides a surfboard. So there you have it, Santa around the world. So now if you have the opportunity to spend Christmas in another country, you’ll be prepared for some of their Christmas traditions.

8 FEATURES Burnout
How self-care is important Areli Leon, Advertising Editor Stress-- it follows us like a shadow on a sunny day. Sure, it’s normal for people to feel anxious over tasks and events. On the other side, constantly feeling exhausted, useless, and annoyed. This could be important signs of burnout, which is very important to treat. This is because burnout can eventually bother you physically; such as insomnia and a weaker immune system. Burnout can be caused by numerous factors such as over-
working, workplace dysfunction, unclear future, financial stress, and perfectionist tendencies. It is important to treat burnout as soon as it is detected, because it is not something that can be recovered from quickly. To begin, you need to identify why you are experiencing burnout. Identify what parts about daily tasks make you dread the day to come. After this, come up with ways that these inconveniences can be avoided or solved.
In addition, it is important to take care of your body physically. Exercise and getting enough sleep play a huge role. Another way to crawl out of that headspace is to take a vacation. It is also helpful for you to assess your personal goals, keep in mind that goals need to give you motivation rather than fill you with stress. Although it is easier said than done, it is vital that you remain positive throughout this process. Burnout is something that can
build up gradually, so whether or not you think you are doing well, continue to assess your mental and physical health.

For a simple snowflake design start by taking four popsicle sticks and gluing two of them together in the middle to make a cross.
Then you can glue the two crosses together for your snowflake shape. If you want to up this design, you can experiment with different sized popsicle sticks and different patterns to make your snowflake unique. After you have the popsicle sticks glued together, you can decorate your snowflake using markers, glitter, and any paint you wish. The most important thing is to have fun making your snowflake unique.
Swirl Christmas Ornaments: For this ornament you will need a clear plastic or glass ornament, paint in your colors of choice, ribbon, and any glitter or markers if you want to make it your own. First, you need to take off the top piece of the ornament. Then, using the paint colors you chose, start adding the colors to the inside. If you want to add any glitter at this point, pour it in the top the same
way you did with the paint. After you add the amount of paint you want, put the top back on the ornament and begin shaking it around to spread the paint. You can also use a popsicle stick to swirl it around manually. After this is finished, you can use paint, markers, or a Sharpie to decorate the outside and write whatever you wish. Lastly, tie a ribbon on the top piece, put it back on, and you are ready to add your new ornament to your tree.
Sled Christmas Ornament: Even though it might not snow in Alabama, it is always fun to make a sled for the tree. There are a number of different items you can use to make a sled, but today we will be using popsicle sticks, ribbon, and a handy dandy hot glue gun. First, you need to make the base of the sled. Use an odd number, we recommend 5. Make sure to leave the middle popsicle stick a little further out than the other 4 sticks. Take 3 popsicle sticks and cut them in half. Those will be used as the head of the sled. Glue all 6 of the broken parts together. Then glue that chunk to the base, right below the exposed tip without covering it.
Then glue two sets of two popsicle sticks together and also glue those two chunks on either side. Finally, glue a ribbon to the exposed part of the sled so it can hang. There you go, now you have a radical sled that everyone will be jealous of.

Travis Scott’s Astroworld Catastrophe The tragedy the killed and injured many Olivia Britton, Staff Writer
Friday, November 5th, started out like any other day for the majority of Houston Texas. Others were preparing for Travis Scott’s two-day “Astroworld” festival. The one thing that no one was expecting to happen was death. Unfortunately though, death is exactly what happened. People began entering the gate as early as 2:00 P.M. and by 10:15 P.M. eight people had died. The timeline of the night went as follows: 2:00 people entered the gates; 9 P.M.-- Travis Scott takes the stage for his first set; 9:39 P.M.-- the first recording that hospitals have of someone collapsing; 10:15 P.M.-Travis’s set ends, and his stage producers inform him that people are dying within the crowd. The venue that Travis’s team had booked for the scheduled event was meant to hold around 30,000 people, but sources are saying the attendance
of the concert was closer to 50,000. The head of Houston’s police force revealed they had “expressed concerns” of overcrowding to Scott ahead of the festival. This obviously caused everyone to be uncomfortable considering there was not enough space to hold everyone in the first place. This caused eight people to die that night of “crowd surge.” A crowd surge is when individuals in a large group make a sudden or rapid movement within a confined space. This sometimes results in people being shoved or even trampled to death. It’s different from a stampede, where individuals move toward a single direction in a state of panic or confusion. Crowd surges and stampedes are not a rare occurrence at large concerts, but when they go unnoticed, much like Travis Scott’s festival did, can be extremely dangerous. They
become a bigger concern when a person who has been injured cannot receive medical help. The victims that passed That night are: Mirza Baig (27), Rodolfo Pena (23), Madison Dubski (23), Franco Patino (21), Axel Acosta Avila (21), Jacob Jurinke (20), Brianna Rodriguez (16), and John Hilgert (14). As of 11/17 only two others have passed due to their injuries, Bharti Shahani (22), and Ezra Blount (9). The rest of the festival was cancelled, and news was later revealed that the festival’s emergency plan had not considered the potential for crowd surges. Although the second day of the festival was cancelled this did not stop social media fanatics from attacking Travis Scott, and partner, Kylie Jenner. Many people expressed their concerns and emotions regarding what had hap-
pened. Travis tweeted a statement saying, “I’m absolutely devastated by what took place last night. My prayers go out to the families and all those impacted by what happened at Astroworld Festival. Huston PD has my total support as they continue to look into the tragic loss of life. I am committed to working together with the Huston community to heal and support the families in need. Thank you to Huston PD, FIre Department and NRG Park for their immediate response and support. Love You All.“ The artist’s latest collaboration with Nike has also been postponed due to the negativity currently surrounding the artist. While fans and haters continue to express their concerns in many different ways, victims are continuing to die. New information regarding the festival continues to be published everyday.
Guidance... Holiday Edition
All of our guidance counselor’s Christmas traditions Elley Atchison, Staff Writer Christmas is a holiday filled with unique traditions spent with family and friends. Everyone knows the events they look forward to when December arrives. This Christmas, our guidance department shared the treasured moments they have during this chilly holiday.
Two of Mrs. Gragg’s special Christmas traditions are right here in Cullman. She loves watching the Christmas tree lighting in Depot Park and the fun, marching Christmas parade. Another tradition Mrs. Gragg cherishes is decorating Christmas cookies at her mother’s house. She also loves putting up the Christmas tree while enjoying a warm cup of hot cocoa and delicious Christmas treats. Mrs. Gragg shares another favorite with many: waking the morning of Christmas knowing Santa Clause has paid a visit to their house the night before.
Mrs. Bishop-Hollis loves to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas with her daughter, who sets up her childhood nativity scene under their tree. Her tree is significant because it is enriched with memories and meaning. When decorating the tree, her family sets on handcrocheted ornaments made by her grandfather long ago, as well as the “Frosty Friends” Hallmark ornaments. Mrs.Bishop-Hollis has another special tradition: throwing a birthday party for Jesus on Christmas morning. This celebration includes warm blueberry muffins, candles, balloons, and the traditional song, “Happy Birthday.” A unique side of her traditions is the giving of food. Mrs.Bishop-Hollis rides with her daughter and mother with all types of goods, setting off to gift these items to family and friends who have touched them that year.
Mrs. Kinney celebrates Christmas by experiencing all of the brightly colored, luminous lights around Cullman. Something more personal in Mrs. Kinney’s traditions is when each family member picks out an ornament representing their year; each ornament has a significant meaning to them. The night before Christmas is filled with time spent with her family. She plays fun games and eats a delicious meal. One tradition Mrs.Kinney may share with others is opening one gift under the tree on Christmas eve.
One of Mrs. Bowling’s Christmas traditions is at church during the candle lighting service on Christmas Eve. She attends this luminous tradition with her loved ones, which include her dad, stepmom, sister, brother-in-law, and two nieces. After her time at the service, Mrs. Bowling goes to her parents’ house to have breakfast for dinner. This has been a life-long tradition for Mrs.Bowling and her family.
10 F E A T U R E S New Year, New Expectations Why you should embrace yourself. Areli Leon, Advertising Editor “This year is gonna be the best year yet.”-- a quote often heard as New Year approaches. As people plan their festivities, they also plan towards building healthier habits for themselves. It gives them something to plan towards and anticipate. On the other hand, as New Year’s resolutions begin to start trending, pressure begins to rise. People begin to feel the need to change their current lifestyle in order to become a better version of themselves. Although it is good for people to strive for greatness continuously, this act also causes people to reflect upon all their bad habits from the previous year. They begin to frown upon themselves due to all of the mistakes that were made. This causes them to focus on the things they did wrong rather than the things they were able to enjoy.
These reflections cause people to create extensive lifestyle changes that require a lot of dedication in order to change “for the better.” As a person develops these plans they are reminded of how they are not good enough, leaving them to feel insecure and depressed. These instances can especially stack up on those who struggle with mental illnesses. One should reflect back onto moments from the past year that have helped you grow and that have made you enjoy life a little more. people should realize that if you are not in a good mental state, it is not ideal to change who you are. Therefore, when setting goals for yourself, make sure there is a beneficial reasoning behind it. It is important for you to come up with a goal on your own instead of doing it simply because others
New Years Resolutions How to make attainable goals for the new year. Samantha Johnson, Staff Writer Christmas is fast approaching, which means so is New Years. At the beginning of a new year everyone makes goals, or resolutions. This is completely normal, however, it is sadly also normal for people to make goals that are not attainable. This leads to failure and disappointment. Now the big question is, how do you make attainable resolutions? How do you make a goal that you won’t get burnt out on, give up on, or feel completely exhausted after just a few days of keeping up this resolution? A few helpful tips for the coming year are: 1.Make a long list of resolutions and then go back and pick the one that is most inspiring to you. If you feel inspired by something, you are more likely to do it. 2. Make your resolution more specific. It is easier to reach a goal that is not a broad statement. 3.Make a plan for how to accomplish your resolution. Post It. And no, I don’t mean on social media. Put your goal in a place where you will see it everyday where it doesn’t slip from focus. Now for a few goals that are attainable: Spend more time with family and friends. This goal may seem easy, but it can be challenging to carve out time for family and friends. While this provides a fair challenge, as a resolution should, it is still within reach.
Learn a new hobby. This is a great goal for the new year. It is something that is interesting, which will make you less likely to get burnt out. Prioritize your Mental Health. This goal is good for anyone feeling stressed. By prioritizing mental health, you are not neglecting school, work, or family, but making a little time for yourself, to calm down from the day and prepare for the next day to come. Get rid of one unhealthy habit. This goal is similar to some of the extreme goals that some people set at new years. It is, however, more easily achieved because it breaks down a large goal into a smaller one. Lets say you want to cut out sodas. This is a lot easier to accomplish than a complete lifestyle change, like cutting out soda, junk food, fast food, and working out seven days a week. Offer someone an act of kindness. This goal is great for everyone. There is always something you can do for another person. So shoot for one act of kindness a week, and build on that if possible. This is a small part of the goal to make the world a better place.
recommended you should. Your goals should not be dreadful. They should be something that you look forwards to. Make sure your goals are specific and are accomodated to your needs and schedule. Otherwise, it will get lost into the never-ending list of things you have to do. If broad expectations are developed, it makes it much harder for one to complete the task. People only tend to follow their New Year’s resolutions for a month or less. Once this occurs, it leaves them to feel like a failure for not being able to remain consistent with their lifestyle change in order for them to be seen as a better person. So instead of coming up with far-fetched expectations, reflect upon the actions that made you become better and build upon those morals instead of drastically changing. Not everyone
has the ability to do everything they would like due to their jobs, families, and other unexpected occurrences. Rather than trying to change yourself completely in order to please others, embrace who you are. No one is the same, and as long as you are healthy and happy with who you are there is no needfor you to fit into a mold. So for next year’s resolution: strive for greatness (mentally or physically), not perfection.

Football Season Comes to an End Bearcats fall to Jackson Olin in OT
Olivia Britton, Staff Writer
Our Bearcats competed in the 6A State Playoffs for the third year in a row. Friday, November 5th, the Bearcats faced the Mustangs of Jackson-Olin. Half way through the first quarter Jackson Olin scored a 20 yard touchdown and took the lead 6-0. Soon after, the Mustangs successfully scored two-point conversion making the score 8-0. However, Cullman then scored early in the second quarter when quarterback Ryan Skinner hit Jake Dueland for a 20-yard touchdown. Jackson Olin still had the lead 8-7 after the extra point from Nate Zills. Through the second quarter Jackson Olin scored with a 15-yard touchdown pass, but a missed extra point kept the lead at 14-7. Cullman’s defense came up with a big stop just before the end of the quarter and the Bearcats went into the locker room trailing 14-7 at the half. Starting the second half, both teams’ defense dominated. So much so that neither team scored the entire third quarter. With 1:26 remaining in the game Skinner connected with Jamar Kay for a 50-yard touchdown. The extra point kicked by Zills tied the game at 14-14. Throughout the course of the game the Bearcats came up with many
big defensive stops. When they scored late in the fourth quarter, this forced the Mustangs and the Bearcats to go into overtime. The first play of the overtime period, Jackson Olin immediately takes the lead with a touchdown and a twopoint conversion making the score 22-14. Cullman couldn’t keep pace with the Mustangs after regulation, and their season came to an end with a 22-14 OT loss in round one. The Mustangs advanced to the next round of playoffs, but lost against Mountain Brook 45-14. The Bearcats finished with a record of 7-4. Head Coach Oscar Glasscock says that in total they are losing 25 players from the 2022 class. This senior class has been a part of a 14-5 Region record (21-13 overall); They have beaten every team in the Region; beaten the first 7A team in school history. ; Won the first 6A playoff game in school history; achieved the first 6A top ten ranking in school history; beat Hartselle on the road for the first time since 1997; won 8 games in 6A for the first time in school history; and been a part of the school’s 600 th win in program history. “I know there will be some big shoes to fill,” says Wide Receiver Coach Ty
Campbell. While the class of ‘22 will be greatly missed, the Bearcats have already started training for their 2022 season. “We started the Monday after the season ended. Our strength level is competitive with anyone in the state now, so we will continue to develop kids in that area,” Glasscock stated. Others have chosen to take some well earned time off from football. Defensive Line Coach David Hannah jokes that his plans this off season are to “Get to where my wife recognizes me when I come home,” Campbell says that his plans include being on the water fishing some, as well as spending time with his wife and family. Now that the season is officially over I asked a few of the varsity coaches to share their favorite memory, from the 2021 season.
Season Take-Aways:
Kyle Morris (Special teams Coordinator) “Bucc-ee’s/Brightstar Boys.” David Hannah (Defensive line Coach) “What I will take away from this season, what I will remember most is the resilience of the young men I
Lights, Camera, Action! A theater production
Angelina Hughes, Staff Writer This year the Theatre classes are producing Frozen the musical. While most people know the actors are memorizing lines and choreography, there is much more that goes into making a production. There is a makeup crew, a stage crew, and a tech crew. Sometimes art students help create background props for scenes. They help create the right atmosphere for each scene by putting their efforts into costumes, set design, and lighting. All of the crews’ and actors’ combined talents is what truly brings a production together. Carson Kallhoff interviewed some stage crew members to better understand what they do. There is a lot of work put into making a play. There are many assets needed to make the content entertaining to the masses, from controlling the lights and audio, to acting and presenting a show to the audience. However, there is a vital part of the cast of a play that, while
not in the spotlight, keeps the entire production together. These people are the stage crew. The stage crew workers are in charge of moving different sets used in the play and making sure all of the actors are prepared for their performance. There are many benefits that come with being on stage crew. Aldon Laney, a senior at Cullman, as well as the Stage Manager for the stage crew, states, “Stage crew has provided a lot of its members (including myself) a fun opportunity to make new friends and improve on social and time management skills. It has also provided me with over 300 volunteer hours.” Aldon also encourages others to join stage crew to help with the following play, The Addams Family in the next production year. If you are interested in getting more involved in the school and the different arts it provides, stage crew is a great place to start. So hopefully now you under-
stand a little bit better that there is so much more that goes into producing a show. Be sure to see our fellow Bearcats in Frozen! Just remember the next time you see a play, appreciate all the little details because behind that were people who dedicated their time and talent to help make the show what it is. If you are interested in getting involved with tech crew, make sure to talk to Mr. Cook. His theatre room is downstairs in the art department.
was blessed to have coached. The injuries that were overcome and endured, the younger players being thrust into a role requiring them to play at a level that no one expected and yet did, and the hunger and commitment they made to meet the demands of practices and games that gave them a season they can remember proudly. “ Matt Hopper (Defensive Coordinator) “My favorite memory from this season was probably beating Athens. They were the team that we struggled with the most the past few years, so it was good to beat them at our place this year.” Heath Saint (Offensive Coordinator) “My favorite memory is after losing 2 games in a row, we beat a 3-0 Buckhorn team 35-0.”

Cheer Competitions Go, fight, win!
Emily Gable, Staff Writer You see them every Friday night, chanting and cheering for the football team. They cheer at several sporting events, and their pep and smiles seem to only add to the gameday spirit. But they spend a lot of time and hard work towards the competition season. After hours and hours of practice, the cheerleaders of both the Varsity and Junior Varsity squad advanced to compete at State on December 6th, and to compete at Nationals in Disney in February. At their competition on November 13th, the Varsity Traditional Team won. The Junior Varsity Team placed 2nd. On top of this, both teams received qualifying scores in the Gameday division. Christmas can last as long as you want Drew Williamson, Staff Writer Fun fact of the day! At birth, baby elephants weigh 200 pounds. This makes them the biggest babies in the world, right next to those who complain about people celebrating Christmas too early. I’ve heard loads of people complaining about how we always put up decorations and Christmas trees too early, and I’m fed up! Christmas is one of the best holidays around, so why should we have to confine ourselves to only 25 days of celebration? One of my favorite feelings is walking into a building when it’s cold outside and noticing Christmas decorations as far as the eye can see. That, combined with the music and the indoor heat, is just such a cozy feeling! My favorite thing to do during the holiday season is drive through neighborhoods and look at all the creative decorations in people’s yards. Christmas really brings out the best in people, so why do some people get upset when decorations are put up just a
little early? And I haven’t even mentioned Christmas movies yet! I think we can all agree that some Christmas movies are some of the best mo vies ever made. Elf, Home Alone, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Die Hard, you name it. These movies are amazing and I love being able to watch them, but let’s be honest. Why is it only socially acceptable to watch these movies during the month of December? If I wake up on November 1st with an urge to watch Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, then I’m going to watch Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and you can’t stop me. Now, I know what you’re going to say. “What about Thanksgiving?” Trust me, there’s nothing wrong with Thanksgiving, but I think we can all agree that Christmas is just the cooler holiday (no pun intended). Name one Thanksgiving song. I’ll wait. Now think about how many Christmas songs there are. You could say the same
thing about decorations, candy, or even movies. Again, I have nothing against Thanksgiving as a holiday, I just think that Christmas is simply the more jolly holiday and, thus, deserves to be celebrated earlier. Also, isn’t the entire point of Christmas to spread cheer and be happy? Why do some people feel obligated to put others down for doing so? It’s just idiotic and goes against the entire point of the season. There’s no reason to be such a Scrooge.
Can You Really Call Me A Scrooge? Christmas can not last as long as you want Alecia Scott, Staff Writer I am not a Scrooge. I like when holidays are celebrated in the time it is supposed to be celebrated. I do not hate Christmas. In fact, I love Christmas and the lively environment it brings around. After a while, however, the cheery spirit gets a little annoying. The idea of starting to celebrate Christmas immediately after Halloween is absolutely revolting. Mariah Carey’s little stunt on November first though is a little funny. If you don’t know what she did, she smashed a bunch of pumpkins while playing
The movies and the music is honestly the grossest thing ever. The classics like The Grinch, Elf, and Santa Clause are tolerable, but literally any Hallmark movie is the worst, cheesiest movie ever, not to mention they are all the same. I will walk out of a store if I hear a Christmas song before December.
am not saying that we should wait until December 20 to start celebrating Christmas; I am saying at least wait until the end of Thanksgiving.
Don’t think I forgot about the whole marketing ploy of marking everything up before Black Friday, so people think they are actually getting a deal. Companies are the real reason we start celebrating Christmas so early. Christmas Creep is the selling of Christmas themed decorations and gifts before the traditional beginning of the shopping season, which, in America, is Black Friday. This is what I am talking about. Why not just wait? Wait to put up your decorations. Wait to play the songs in the stores. Just wait. I
Don’t even get me started on Thanksgiving Erasure. People do not appreciate Thanksgiving like we should. I can only identify maybe three Thanksgiving traditions that I know of. Thanksgiving is a national holiday. We get out of school for it. Pay a little respect for that at least. I understand that there is a lot more preparation for Christmas, but are two complete months necessary for that? I can understand preparing for the holiday, but why does the music, movies and decorations need to go up on the 3rd of
November? Let me give you an example. The Hilight staff put up our first christmas tree on November 2nd. That isn’t all; following that they put up more mini-trees on the 12th. I protested, but I was out-voted. I may sound like a Scrooge, but I really don’t hate Christmas. You can say I am a Grinch all you want, but in the end, we will both have our views. Oh, and I almost forgot, have a Merry Christmas!
All I Want for Christmas is You.

16 E D I T O R I A L S A Fault In Society
A depiction of cancel culture and how it creates substancial issues Elley Atchison, Staff Writer Cancel culture must be reassessed and then redefined. This toxic habit of people has become extremely popular over the past few years; however, it is something that must be evolved into an establishment of accountability, not a malicious way to point out other’s wrongdoings. Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines cancel culture as “the practice or tendency of engaging in mass cancelling as a way of expressing disapproval and exerting social pressure.” This definition represents a great amount of American culture and the norms of our society. Those societal norms must be changed. Firstly, cancel culture is a newly-adapted act and is essentially a boycott against a particular person due to their foul actions. This “cancellation” is most known against celebrities and people in the public eye. When these celebrities say or do something socially unacceptable, the public will call them out, yet, go much further than what is necessary. Instead of holding these celebrities to fair accountability, the public deciphers that they are “cancelled” and nobody should support them anymore, for that would be enabling. The public wants to hold celebrities on a pedestal they cannot balance on, and hold them to standards even the public cannot keep up with.
Secondly, people have a warped perception of how to make efficient change and justice in the world. When simply dropping someone, they are not being held responsible. When these celebrities are cancelled, many attempt to get back into the public’s good graces by making an unauthentic apology. That produces no cognitive process of wrongdoings and, therefore, no future change. There is a better way to hold people accountable. When someone famous does or says something racist, homophobic, sexist, or rude, address the incident. Once this issue is called out, do not “cancel” the individual, instead, observe development in that person. This way, people are able to understand why what they are doing is not acceptable, and they can have the chance to change for the better. To conclude, a cancel culture is an ineffective way of producing change. But with the change of mind in the public, that can be completely flipped to a system of accountability and transformation. One must give more grace and understanding, while also not accepting injustice. The society we live in wants to produce positive growth in others, and that can be done through canceling culture if we reassess the nature of it and redefine how we implement it.
Many times celevrities are “cancelled” for things that are unproblematic and things they should not be cancelled for. Here are a few of those times:
Elizabeth Olson was cancelled after her co-worker passed away and she did not immediately post about it on social media.
Harry Styles was cancelled for waering a dress on the cover of Vouge Magazine.
Aziz Ansarni was cancelled for what was equivallent to an awkward date. Jhonny Depp was cancelled when he was falsely accused of domestic violence.
Terry Cruz spoke out about the “Me Too” movement about being abused and was cancelled because males aren’t usually victims of assault.

Are we forgetting the REAL reason for the season? Emily Gable, Staff Writer
“Seeing is believing, but sometimes the most real things in the world are the things we can’t see.” – The Polar Express 2,000 years after what we call “the first Christmas,” people rush each holiday season to get the best gifts for their loved ones and sing carols. Although there are plenty of traditions to celebrate with, have we forgotten the reason we celebrate Christmas? You’ve heard the story about a starry night, angels, wise men, and shepherds. It sounds like an elaborate fairytale. But so does a big red man with a white beard, and we build monuments and sing songs about him. Santa Claus isn’t bad, but he isn’t the reason we celebrate Christmas. Nor are the gifts or the songs. Jesus is. In the real Christmas story, Mary is a virgin engaged to Joseph. One day, an angel appears to tell her she is going to have a baby and that she is to name Him Jesus. You’re thinking, “How is that possible if she’s a virgin?” So was Mary. But the angel told her that with God, nothing is impossible and she would have a child. Mary then told Joseph about her pregnancy. Joseph wanted to politely break off the engagement when an angel appeared in his
dreams and told him he didn’t need to be afraid, and to continue with his marriage to Mary. Joseph and Mary rode to Bethlehem, Joseph’s hometown, for a census. Upon reaching Bethlehem, Mary became ready to have her baby. There was no room to stay in the inn, so Mary gave birth to Jesus in a stable. She wrapped him in “swaddling clothes” (strips of cloth) and laid him in a manger (feeding trough). Later, we learn about the shepherds, the star in the sky, and the wise men. But I’ll let you read that for yourself. You can find this story in any of the Gospels of the Bible, especially Luke. So why do we celebrate this baby? It’s not how He was born that was so important. It’s why He was born and who He was that makes this so special. You see, people who worshipped God had to follow strict rules. If they didn’t, they would have to make animal sacrifices (including lambs) to atone for their sins. There was a lot of discrimination on who could be near God. When Jesus, God in human form, came to Earth, He fulfilled the purpose of these laws. He travelled around, performing miracles and teaching about God. People either

loved or hated Him. The people who hated Him were over-religious church leaders who had influence in the government. Although Jesus’ message was love, it seemed to contradict all of these harsh laws. For this reason, the religious leaders plotted to kill Him. Finally, their plans succeeded. When it was time for Jesus to be killed, the roman official Pontius Pilate gave the masses an option to kill Jesus or Barabbas (a murderer and thief). Although Jesus had done nothing wrong, the crowd chose Him. Jesus was first taken to be whipped. The whips had nine tails, each with a sharp object at the end that would rip away skin with each strike. Jesus then had to carry a cross up a hill. Someone from the crowd had to help him because it was so agonizing. At the top of the hill, they drove nails into his hands and through his feet onto the cross. They shoved a crown of thorns onto his head in mockery of His claim to be “the King of the Jews.” As Jesus was suffering, he prayed for forgiveness for those killing him. Eventually, Jesus breathed His last and spoke, “It is finished.” The sky went dark, and they buried Him. Many people celebrated
During the Supply Shortage Angelina Hughes, Staff Writer
The holidays are a time where all is merry and bright, but many shoppers may be left saying, “Bah Humbug” with all the stores having less sales on Black Friday and holiday specials. Is the Grinch stealing Christmas? No, the Grinch is not stealing this Christmas. Rather, all of Santa’s helpers are not available to unload gifts to his sleigh or the shelves at the stores. This labor shortage and supply chain issues are leaving stores low on inventory. With Santa’s empty bag of toys, there will be a competition to get the best gifts first from whatever is available at local stores. Nevertheless, when it comes to holiday gifts, it can be stressful to find gifts that are unique and thoughtful. A thoughtful gift is something that the person will love and be able to use to follow their passions and pursue their hobbies or interests. No pressure, Santa has made a list that you can check twice to help get your friends and family a gift, whether they are naughty or nice. Height Increasing Insoles- These insoles are a wonderful gift to take
any shwaty’s confidence to new heights. Claw Clops- This gift is simple and will add a beautiful touch to enhance your friend’s stylish hair. Portable Chargers- Portable chargers are a must for long distance travel to keep electronics lasting longer. Bubble Tea Kit- Know someone obsessed with boba? They will love the gift of a bubble tea kit where they can create their favorite flavors. Tye-Dye-Kit- Crafty friends will enjoy grtting creative when tye-dying shirts or tote bags. Zodiac Ring- For that friend interested in astrology, they are sure to appreciate a ring with their zodiac sign. Bucket Hats- Get yourself a bucket hat, we all need one. Long Distance Lamps- These in-
sync lamp will glow when touched, meaning you can litterally brighten someone’s day. Mini Portable Projector- Binge-pros can show their favorite videos to many friends with the little projector. Simply connect it to a phone or computer and display it on a blank wall. Fluffy Socks- If nothing else, you can always resort to fluffy socks. Hopefully these ideas will bring your family or friends some holiday cheer. If your younger sibling ends up giftless, you can explain that Santa did not make it through the pandemic, and that excuse should keep extra cash in your pocket for a couple of years. If you would actually do something that cruel- please don’t you’re not Scrooge- that isn’t you- that was just a joke- chill.
His death. Except for one Roman officer, who instantly felt regret for what He had done. Jesus died because you and I are human. We’re never going to get it right. You’ve heard Him called the “Lamb of God.” Jesus’ death was the ultimate atonement for our sins. When He died, the veil was torn, and now we can feel the presence of God no matter what skin color or status we have. There are still rules that we should try to follow, but they aren’t as strict. We no longer have to make sacrifices. All we have to do is turn to Him and be saved. Three days after Jesus died, the stone in front of His tomb was rolled away. He came back to life. Now He is in Heaven and sits by God, and he prays for us. Now we can have a PERSONAL relationship with the maker of Heaven and Earth. He died for us because He loved us. You’ve heard John 3:16 a thousand times, but it’s worth mentioning here. He died for us because He WANTED us. So that’s the reason for the season. A baby was born in a manger, and that baby grew up to save the world. That is, if the world accepts Him. Take time to consider that it’s not just stories; that there’s truth in this nativity story.
18 E D I T O R I A L S Am I Distracting? The misogyny behind dress code Anna Beth Mauldin, Staff Writer I’ve always seemed to notice the focus on girls’ clothing and how it becomes the object of adult interest and surveillance. Today’s schools are facing great problems, such as declining test scores, drugs, and law-breaking. Yet minor “problems” such as dress code seem the capture the focus of many schools’ administration. Dress codes-granted the power they trust school administrators to manage student identity-can ultimately institute discriminatory standards as the norm. The prevalence of today’s dress code protests and objections suggests that schools not only need to renew their policies-they also have to acknowledge and address the underlying biases that go into producing them. Is it possible that we educate the leaders of our school systems to teach students in our schools to not engage in misogyny and objectification of women’s bodies? Should this even have to be taught in the first place? My long-lasting relationship with dress code began in 2nd grade when I was called out by my teacher for wearing spaghetti straps. I was not only embarrassed but bothered by the fact that I was getting in trouble for such a trivial thing. I began to question the goal behind dress code very early on, and that goal became very clear: cover-up. Dress codes separate us into gender roles, affect how we negotiate our bodies, and attach morality to clothing. One’s character is the first thing
that seems to be judged when observing someone’s clothing choice. The constant reinforcement of clothing and character has lingered in my mind as well as others. This not only resulted in students continuing to follow dress codes blindly later in life, but also making value judgements about people who didn’t. Clothes began to symbolize values-women who wore low-cut tops were “seeking attention” and girls wearing mini skirts were “easy” and so on. What kind of environment have dress codes been creating for people all around the world, and how has this induced us to move backward in society? A well-created dress code policy holds boys accountable for their behavior. Girls want dress codes that make it very clear that they are not responsible for another individual’s inability to learn or focus. Can we throw the phrase “provocative” out the window? This suggests that clothing provokes assault or harassment. Harassers harass and abusers abuse no matter the clothing choice. A well-created dress code policy gives boys credit for being more than the sum of their hormones. When girls’ bodies are seen as “distractions” to boys, this demeans boys as incapable of controlling their basic urges. In fact, what boy do you know is being distracted by a shoulder or an exposed midriff? A well-created dress code policy is applied fairly to everyone; there are no gender-specific rules or double standards. A transgen-
der-friendly policy means anyone can wear a dress or a suit or earrings or makeup. Anyone can wear their hair long or short. Made this way, a dress code can do more than control; it can protect those who are already vulnerable. It is important to teach everyone to respect those who are gender nonconforming as well as transgender. A well-created dress code policy gives room for expression and flexibility, which includes painted nails, colored hair, and allowing sensible clothing (tank tops and shorts for when temperatures rise, etc). The discussions with fellow classmates (especially girls) about the biased rules put in place for us have continued for years and years. Every girl I’ve spoken to prior to writing this article has voiced how they feel targeted by dress codes and its latent biases. What is the point? Why are we being targeted? I think it’s reasonable to listen to these girls and trust them, as they are experts on their own experiences. Reasons like “safety” may be said, and while this may seem like a reasonable justification, it is definitely not free of faults. The reason of “safety” implies that what an individual is wearing deems them safe or not. Approaches like this imply that it’s the duty of the individual to deal with assault, instead of holding the assaulter accountable. Schools and educational institutes are supposed to be safe spaces for students, yet these rules are im-
posed within our campuses. One must begin to question why students need to guard their safety in these spaces. If students aren’t safe within our schools, then where are they safe? A “distraction-free learning environment”. The message behind the dress code is what’s so discriminatory. Implementing a school dress code does not solve real problems in the classroom. Why focus on dress code when the main focus should be on things like decreasing test scores and lawbreaking? There is a real culture being built up through dress codes in which many women are receiving the message that male behavior will never change. Women who take issue with dress codes aren’t being blindly defiant or rebellious, but truly advocating for their right to be heard as human beings rather than objects. Most aren’t asking for schools to get rid of these dress codes altogether, but the policies to be relevant to their lives, gender expression, and cultural diversity. Policies must be consistent as well as fairly applied. It’s time people began to listen.

Now it’s cool to care, even if you don’t Anna Beth Mauldin, Staff Writer
We’ve all seen it: the black square, “Repost to help climate change,” and things similar to these little infographics posted everywhere on social media. These things have a name, and that name is performative activism. This is defined as “activism done to increase one’s social capital rather than because of one’s devotion to a cause.” Last summer, everyone took to their social media platforms to voice their support for possibly the largest social movement in American history. Most asserted their position using hashtags and infographics. Infographics-the aesthetically pleasing images we see posted on the social media platforms that we utilize every day- include small parts of crucial information regarding important topics or causes, which people can learn about in order to better themselves as an activist, ally, and person. Reposting one of these images without doing the research behind the topic or cause is just like spreading a rumor without
knowing the real truth. These images bear a stronger meaning than just a repost; they are informing their audience of a story they should educate themselves on, of a cause that they need to support. While these infographics are linked with performative activism, it is still important to spread these messages if you know what you are talking about. It is often difficult to draw a clear line between genuine support and performative allyship, and it’s become popular and trendy to “show support” without doing it in real life. But we need to ask ourselves, what is actually being done after these posts? Is this actually creating a difference? Let’s talk about the role of social media. It’s very important to note the influence that social media has on everyone in today’s society, and how it influences the way we think as well as the way we learn about certain issues. After all, social media transformed Black Lives Mat-
ter into a nationwide movement. Having said that, social media is not going to fix everything. It’s not going to solve all of the problems in the world because you reposted an image or tweeted a hashtag. Social media has made it easier to for people to take action over a screen rather than take real action A primary example of performative activism was Blackout Tuesday (which took place on June 2nd, 2020) where supporters were supposed to post a black image to reflect on the recent acts of police brutality and discrimination. On this day, Instagram was flooded with images of black squares and quickly blacked out the tag for Black Lives Matter. The outpouring posts diminished parts of crucial information being used by organizers on the ground and individuals seeking to look for information. No speaking out, no education, just an image and a few hashtags to show that you care. It was seen as a day of proving to the world that you are
a good person, rather than doing good. It also proved that many people were treating this movement as a trend. Another example is when influencers went to protests for a photo-op and videos. When posting on social media, it is crucial to understand what you are posting. Recognizing misinformation is important in educating others and helping them remain properly informed. Activism is defined as “the policy or action of using vigorous campaigning to bring about political or social change.” Reposting infographics and false information is not considered a notable action when bringing attention to social and political change. There are so many other things you can do other than reposting infographics. There are effective ways to spread messages, but you must do more to truly support these causes.
EDITORIALS Is Christmas Too Commercialized?
20
The insanity and downfall of the Christmas meaning Abbie Allison, Staff Writer If I have said it once I will say it again, Christmas is way too commercial for my taste. The idea of spending much more than people have just in order to have gifts upon gifts is ridiculously expensive and not at all the meaning for the season. The whole reason we celebrate Christmas, is apparently, for receiving and maybe giving a time or two. I mean how could it not be when this is a time families are supposed to be unified and togeth-
er but instead are being physically held “hostage” by stores. With the stores nowadays putting up decorations in October and luring customers in, it is like the old class citizens never even stood a chance. Honestly, it is unbelievable how retail stores have been able to take and hide the real meaning of the season. At this point, every year is getting worse by the minute of people just buying gifts in October and then not caring until the day of the
actual event. Personally, I have seen this occur not only already this year but in these past years and have absolutely no words. Commercializing the beauty behind this wonderful holiday should absolutely be a crime. If I have said it once I will say it again, the world needs a change for the people. What has our community come to if we stay “wrapped up” in the gifts? Worthless, that’s what. I never thought once in my 17 years on this Earth
that the Christmas season would be so costly. Oh and for the people out there that just don’t believe in Christmas being commercialized, I will never understand. Not once would I ever get so caught up in the money and greed that I would be blinded by our technology world today. So yes, yes, yes Christmas has certainly lost its meaning behind the season and yes, it is an absolute disgrace.
The News And Its Many, Many Flaws Why news is no longer a reliable source Alecia Scott, Staff Writer Nowadays, it is so difficult to find unbiased opinions. However, the more I realize it, there is no such thing as “unbiased.” Everyone has an opinion and they think they are entitled to share it with everyone. This is not a problem when the topic you are talking about is light-hearted but when it comes to politics and news it becomes a problem. News and politics are not the same thing. On any national news channel, they will talk about politics. Politics is national news, but national news is not just politics. As someone who would like to see both sides or the truth I have to look at up to 6/7 sources. That is absolutely absurd. A new’’s anchor’s job is not to express their personal opinion. Their job is to tell us the facts completely unfiltered. If they can not do their job then they should not be in the position they are in. CNN is incredibly biased. Hating on the Republican party while excusing what the Democrats have done. Channels such as Newsmax and Fox are also incredibly biased. Disrespecting the Democrats while making excuses for Republicans
and giving them “get out of free jail cards.” People do wrong on both sides. There is no such thing as perfect and clearly no such thing as unbiased. As someone who is not into politics, the only way to really know what is going on is to look for the stuff yourself. Watch interviews and trials and read the bills and acts these channels are speaking of. If you are going to do that, then the “news” channels become obsolete. I am not saying get rid of the news. I am saying go back to when investigative journalism was still a thing. I know, I sound like a boomer. But fun fact; I am 16 and I have little to no opinion in politics or the news. I am expressing my opinion, but I am giving you both sides of the spectrum. As most believe the news is not credible, but they watch it anyway. People are naturally hypocrites. I know that word has negative diction, but I do not mean it in a negative way. It is simply human nature. Free-will fogs up our ability to make an unbiased decision. If something goes against your beliefs, you will not do it. Right?
If something has more of a reward you will most likely go with that choice. Let’s use an example. You hate 20 dollar bills, you only use 1s,5s,10s,50s and 100s. You get an option. Get thirty 20 dollar bills, or sixty 5s. You can not switch out the money for other types of currency. Let’s say you know that the first option is $600 and the second option is only $300. Now according to your beliefs you would take the $300 right? Most would pick the $600 even though they hate 20 dollar bills. That is hypocritical. This is the same when saying that news sources are not credible, but you watch them anyway. So I come here with a solution. Make your own choice. Do not watch news unless you already know about the topic on your own. The news should be used as a second and maybe even third view. Investigate on your own. Watch the actual trial unedited and without commentary. Hear the bills and proclamations yourself. Then watch the news to try to understand where other people are coming from. It won’t be easy, but soon you will see exactly what the news is
hiding, over exaggerating, and even what they could be lying about.

Winter Fashion
Fashion trends and styles to wear this season Anna Beth Mauldin, Staff Writer
Because of the temperature dropping and time changing, the last thing we want to think about is what to wear. I know most of us aren’t ready to accept it, so instead, we’ll settle for the warmest, comfiest, and coziest clothes possible. But that doesn’t mean we can’t dress stylishly at the same time. With winter approaching, now is the time to incorporate interesting layering, dynamic textures, and a richer color palette into your wardrobe. Here are a few of my favorite winter trends, all of which are totally wearable, easy to include into your existing wardrobe, classic enough to bring back season after season, and available at all price points. Furry Frenzy Spotting bright-red outerwear at Bottega Veneta and other brands, a furry frenzy was apparent on the Fashion Week runways this year. Despite fashion’s move away from a comfort-first mentality, designers aren’t ready to turn their backs on that cozy feeling just yet. This time around, getting comfortable looks a little different (by that, I mean fuzzy and luxurious). Incorporating a fur jacket or purse into your wardrobe is a statement piece that will add so much to even a plain outfit. Prominent Patterns Throughout the past year, patterns have played an enormous role in modern fashion. Patterns such as Moiré, the wavy, textured print designers such as Tom Ford featured in their collections are one of the more aesthetically pleasing of them all. From dresses to puffer jackets, the pattern effect is coming to a wardrobe near you. Sweater Season Sweater weather is in full swing, with designers heading straightforward to knitwear and oversized sweaters. A subtle touch of texture will give layered outfits more interest and dimension. Plus, you can never go wrong with a plain knit sweater. Bringing Back the 60s The 60s are back, and it’s bringing the platform boot trend with it. Similar to the famous go-go boot, not only do they add instant style, but are much comfier than a pair of stilettos. Try to incorporate a pair with your favorite turtleneck sweater, mini skirt, and leather jacket (another favorite fall trend). The Leather Trenchcoat The leather trenchcoat combines the unmistakable chic of a classic trench with the edge of a leather jacket. These coats are the perfect transition piece and can be seen in streetwear fashion everywhere. The Perfect Puffer You can never beat an especially perfect puffer jacket. It’s no longer just a protective winter coat; the fashion world has opened it with open arms. From oversized padding to pastels, there’s no beating this popular trend. Styling Scarves When in doubt, bundle up with a thick patterned scarf, guaranteed to add a little something extra to your winter outfits.

Letters From Father Christmas
Seven Days of Us
Last Christmas in Paris
Let It Snow is a collection of 3 different Christmas Eve romance stories, involving a late night trip to Waffle House, an early morning Starbucks shift, and a train accident. I will admit that this story does not shy away from clichés, but it’s still a good holiday read.
I’m mixing it up a little this time with some spooky Christmas stories! This is a collection of 13 Christmas ghost stories that were published during the Victorian era. Seeing as ghost stories were a Victorian Christmas tradition, these stories really provide a glimpse into Victorian society. Would highly recommend this for scary story fanatics!
Picture this. It’s March 2020 and you’ve just received the news that you’re going to have to quarantine in your home because of covid. While this book was published in 2017, it’s even more relevant now. The book follows Olivia, a doctor who has just returned from treating a foreign epidemic and now has to quarantine for a week with her family during Christmas.
For all the history buffs out there, this book takes place during WW1. In August 1914, as the war is z, everyone is sure that the war will be over by Christmas. But, as we all know, history had other plans. This story follows Evie and Thomas, two lovers disconnected by the war who’s only communications are through letters.

CAMPUS NEWS
Mickey Mouse Marching Band Highlights from band’s trip to Disneyworld Drew Williamson, Staff Writer
A few weeks ago, the CHS band went to Disneyworld for their trip. They go to Disney every 4 years, and they were given the wonderful opportunity to perform in the Magic Kingdom parade. Performing in the parade is a huge honor. During the three days they spent there, they went to Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. The band students had a packed itinerary, that’s for sure. Their daily schedule during the trip was something like this: Wake up at 6 AM, go to park, get back at 9 PM, repeat for three days. For some it was heaven on earth, for others
it was not nearly as appealing. The parade itself was on November 14 and it went right through Main Street. The band was definitely the center of attention!
The Recent Disappearance of Kamala Harris How the United States Vice President has been off the radar
Abbie Allison, Staff Writer
As the year 2021 is coming to a close, many Americans have been pondering the same question: Where is our Vice President? Ever since making it into office, she has been keeping a lower profile than normal and it is making the citizens of the United States question her actions. As Kamala is the first ever woman to be in this position, she has to maintain her role and be portrayed perfectly. Vice President Harris seems to be doing her role exactly correct as she doesn’t ever overshadow President Biden but with her not making hardly any appearances and not going to the border, there is much suspicion. Not all of the vice president’s events are disclosed to the public. Harris has recently been in Paris, France and over the Thanksgiving holiday posted a tweet telling citizens to, “Have a Happy Thanksgiving”. This past week in the news, Symone Sanders, the senior adviser and chief spokes-
person for Vice President Kamala Harris, is expected to leave the White House at the end of the year, according to five administration officials familiar with the matter. An official in the vice president’s office confirmed the departure and said the president and vice president have “known for a while.” For the U.S, this could mean a problem within Harris’ department and how she is handling her responsibilities. Another Kamala Harris event that was in the news not too long ago was how she was transferred power while President Biden underwent his surgery. The vice president worked from her West Wing office at the White House while the president underwent the procedure during his annual physical at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, press secretary Jen Psaki said. Harris has proven to be very active on Twitter within these past few months but has publicly not been
spotted in a very long time. This has made many people upset with how she is handling herself and where she is. It seems as if Kamala is just keeping a quiet profile and letting Biden handle his ideas as President. Vice President Harris is expected to make many more appearances in the months to come as the United States gets further along into Christmas time and the 2022 year.
