The Death of the First Amendment?

No, it’s just that actions have consequences

America. Land of the free. America is one of the only places where the government does not regulate what people say. Society, however, is a different story. Society is the majority of people that decide what is, and what is not acceptable to do or say. These people decide what words to use, and what acts are not appropriate. These people are not always right, and they often evolve over time. What was once socially acceptable back in 1970 is unspeakable today.

Many people get the wrong notion of what freedom of speech is. It is being allowed to say whatever the user wishes without government interference. It is not, however, saying whatever the user pleases and gets prosecuted by the public. It is unfair and childish to assume that action (your words) do not have consequences. Have you ever heard of the saying “If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all?”

A very close to home example of this is the response of a Wallace Professor over the first pride festival in Cullman. The professor claimed that the Ku Klux Klan should come to Cullman as an opponent of the festival. The result of this reaction was that the professor’s job was suspended. An email was then
