project brief “Back to school” is a major retail event which many companies use to pull in revenue comparable to holiday sales. One of the most important products for any student is an alarm clock. Waking from late nights of study can be the most difficult thing about school for some.

research These are examples of existing products, most of which require user interaction to disarm. These interactions create a love-hate relationship with the product. The user is happy that the alarm is effective in getting them out of bed, however the main issue of waking up is SLEEP INERTIA. Scientific research explained that sleep inertia was the key factor in oversleeping and accidents caused by drowsiness.

concept ideation One of the most effective ways to reduce SLEEP INERTIA is to introduce light into the retina. This increases the secretion of melatonin in the pineal gland to adjust the body’s natural circadian rhythym. It simply wakes you up quicker. Light is a feature that needed to be prioritized in alarm clocks, more than the common function; noise. This concept has knob–buttons on each side that adjust the time, volume, and playback capabilities of the synced device. It also has a secondary display so the user can easily see the time from their pillow.

Perennial Wood™ Sponsored Studio

project brief We had first-hand experience working with a new innovative product, Perennial Wood™. Sponsored by Eastman, the Perennial Wood Appalachian State Design Studio 2012 provided us with the chance to work with this new material and display our furniture in several high profile venues. Perennial Wood is an attractive, long-lasting, U.S.-sourced wood well suited for a wide variety of uses including furniture. It is real wood, with real character that has been modified with TruLast™ Technology to stand up to the elements, resisting changes from moisture and remaining dimensionally stable for decades. Because it has 25 percent greater surface hardness, and is three times more resistant to shrinking and swelling than unmodified wood, furniture made with Perennial Wood will hold its shape and stand the test of time. -perennialwood.com

inspiration Once the revising stage was complete, I decided to add some inspiration to the form of each panel. The shapes and angles were directly represented in the structure of a dragonfly’s wing. Once the pattern was made, it was then translated onto each panel to make the overall scheme contiguous.

accessories project brief Accessories today enhance products by adding functionality, or build on the identity/ relationship between the user and the product. The basis of this project is to accessorize our accessories. Rather than designing a freestanding self-reliant product, the goal for this project was to enhance the homogenous world of everyday artifacts. This can be a functional, formal, or emotional enhancement – adding a new use to an existing product, creating a new aesthetic, or helping to create a more personal relationship between user and product. Ideally, the design should address all three areas. The goal is to add value to an existing product, and enliven something we already have.

bookbags overlooked Bookbags are the one thing every student has. Most students invest in an expensive bag with hopes that it will continue to perform throughout their educational career. In the classroom, there aren’t any places to hang your bag, especially in the college classroom. If you’re lucky you can hang your bag on your seat-back, but then it is not easily accessed. And when you get up, sometimes your bag will flip your chair.

clif-hanger concept The CLIF-HANGER™ keeps belongings off the ground and out of the way. The clip uses the bag’s weight to hang on any edge and easily attaches to the top strap of many mainstream packs. Utilizing the top strap also accomodates the user’s access to the bag when hanging.

creating a brand Brand needs to attract students, outdoor gear users, and children. In order for the brand to reach the target market, it needs to have related visual language to the brands desired by each demographic. Product takes the appearance of simplified technical equipment, while also having a comical shape to add personality to the user’s pack.
