The Color of American Music | Saturday, April 21, 2012 | 11 am and 1 pm What do Blind Lemon Jefferson, Count Basie, George Gershwin, Elvis, James Brown, Miles Davis and Beyonce all have in common? The rhythms, sounds and spirit of the blues. In this interactive concert, host Sean Jones and the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra explore how the magical, musical color blue makes American music sound, well, American. And together, on a journey that takes us from jazz to rock to soul to hip hop, we'll discover what singer Willie Dixon meant when he said "the blues is the roots, and the other musics are the fruits.Q" Cost per ticket for Groups of 10 or more: $5.00 All Seats

Spring Concert featuring NEA Jazz Master Benny Golson | Saturday, April 21, 2012 | 8 pm Benny Golson, jazz saxophonist extraordinaire, debuts a new composition with the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra on a night bound to set The Center’s stage ablaze with innovative sound and technique. A veteran of the legendary bands of Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, and countless others, Golson has also composed and arranged music for Count Basie, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, and Diana Ross. In 1996, Golson was awarded the Jazz Masters Award by the National Endowment of the Humanities, the highest honor bestowed upon jazz musicians in the United States. The Center is pleased to welcome this living legend to its main stage.

Generations of Jazz | Thursday, January 26, 2012 | 7 pm Benny Benack and Joe Negri join forces to pay homage to old and new traditions. Negri, widely regarded as one of the foremost jazz guitarists in the country, and Benack, who has established his legacy in the long line of a musically gifted family, overlap their styles.
Jazz and Poetry | Thursday, March 22, 2012 | 7 pm Vanessa German, Pittsburgh’s own sought-after poet, visual artist, and former August Wilson Center Fellow, joins Sean Jones in a night of explosive lyrics, rhymes, and rhythms.
Gospel | Thursday, June 14, 2012 | 7 pm Alton Merrell, talented pianist and member of the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra, and Deborah Moncrief, phenomenal gospel singer, collaborate in an evening alive with jazz and gospel styles.
