Pittsburgh has a rich jazz legacy that is known the world over. Many influential jazz legends, from George Benson and Art Blakey, to Steve Nelson and Mary Lou Williams were born here. Some of the best musicians in the world continue to live and work in Pittsburgh. To celebrate the legacy of jazz in Pittsburgh and to create spaces for interaction between students and working artists, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has selected Pittsburgh jazz musician Sean Jones as Artist in Residence for a 10 month period. The residency aims to generate a year-round creative process that will result in a wide-reaching art project with broad community input and feedback. Mr. Jones will invite the community to join him on the journey of creating new work that the Trust has commissioned for the Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival.

Through workshops, master classes, open rehearsals and student matinee performances, the residency will give the community a chance to interact with professional working artists and to engage with jazz music from both the artist’s perspective and as a patron. The new music created as a result of this project will debut at the Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival and launch the JazzLive Sound/Spirit Initiative which involves commissioning new work every year that will be performed at the Festival. Coinciding with the opening of Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, the JazzLive International Festival will take place in the Cultural District from June 1 – 3, 2012, both at indoor venues and on outdoor stages. The festival will feature local, emerging, and renowned jazz and jazz-influenced musicians in a variety of performance settings.

Programming will include: • Jazz Crawl in the Cultural District, featuring local jazz talent on Friday, June 1 • Two days of free concerts on outdoor stages on Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3 • Jazz and jazz-influenced music from all over the world • Educational opportunities for students, musicians, and the community • Late night club performances with young, experimental musicians and DJs Full festival details and schedule information can be found at pittsburghjazzlive.com.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust closes its Distinctively Dutch Festival, a threemonth celebration of the contemporary arts and culture of the Netherlands, the weekend of May 17–20 with ten performances and a late-night party featuring Dutch multimedia artists and DJs. Described by The Village Voice as “a spare, raw, enormously affecting production,” La Voix Humaine is masterfully directed by Toneelgroep Amsterdam’s Ivo Van Hove and brought to life by the stunning Halina Reijn, one of the most acclaimed actresses of The Netherlands. MCG Jazz will present three Dutch Women of Jazz: pianist Amina Figarova, saxophonist Tineke Postma and the “Lady Miles of Europe” Saskia Laroo on trumpet. In addition, the Pittsburgh International Children’s Festival will feature two companies from the Netherlands: Drums United and Beumer & Drost. The flurry of activity will conclude with electronic music and multimedia presented by VIA at the Trust’s Bally building on Sixth Street. This is the last chance to “go Dutch” before the Distinctively Dutch Festival departs! For more information, visit dutchfestival.trustarts.org.
