year in 2011 and take place May 11-15 on the grounds of the University of Pittsburgh in Oakland. This special festival will showcase performers from the United States, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Canada and West Africa.

Baobab, featuring Le Theatre Motus (Canada and West Africa), highlights the importance of passing down values and traditions from generation to generation.

See Saw, featuring Ciotog (Ireland) targeted for children of ages 18 months to five years. The performance centers on the balance of looking and being looked at, which is sure to provide an unforgettable experience for even the smallest of audience members.

Knuffle Bunny: by The Kennedy Center (USA), captures the audience with Trixie and her favorite stuffed Knuffle Bunny, who is left at the Laundromat.

Celebrates25th Anniversary

The Pittsburgh International Children’s Festival is also proud to partner with the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Theatre Arts to host Silent Disco. Special wireless technology headsets allow attendees to experience a customized dance party. Children (and adults) can choose between the family-friendly music of two DJs. The concept is an international phenomenon that is sure to entertain.

Room on the Broom, featuring Tall Stories (UK), involves the story of a dog, bird, frog, cat and witch, who all end up riding on the same broom, until it snaps.

In 1985, Performing Arts For Children and CitiParks incorporated the Pittsburgh International Children’s Festival as a not-for-profit organization to co-present an international arts festival in Pittsburgh. Since its debut the following year, The Pittsburgh International Children’s Festival has been committed to providing children with the experience of live theater from around the world.

The 2011 festival will also feature the incredible Amococo (sponsored by Equitable Gas), a luminarium sculpture by Architects of Air. (Nottingham, UK). Amococo , an inflatable environment in which people of all ages can explore a labyrinth of light and color, will be located at the Lower Cathedral of Learning Lawn. In addition to the featured performances, festival attendees can look forward to a variety of hands-on arts and cultural activities at the K12 Community Stage as they visit the festival grounds.

In 2008 the Children’s Theater merged with The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, a partnership that has proved to be a dynamic asset to enhancing the Trust’s family programming line-up. The Pittsburgh International Children’s Festival (sponsored by Giant Eagle) will celebrate its 25th PRESENTING SPONSOR

CELL PHONE DISCO Lights Up Tito Way The Hustle and Night Fever may be in the past but disco is staying alive, thanks to The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and generous funding from the Fine Foundation. The Trust brings disco into the twenty-first century with Cell Phone Disco, the city’s first interactive art/science instillation. Located in the Cultural District on Tito Way, passers-by are able to use their cell phones like Da Vinci used a paintbrush to create a masterpiece.

Cell Phone Disco hails from the Netherland-based artist collective, Informationlab. A large-scale light project, Cell Phone Disco uses the signal of a nearby mobile phone to bring the mural to life. This unique art exhibition receives data from 16 antennas which activate the eight processors embedded in the screen, illuminating 2,034 individually controlled LEDs in various patterns. The illuminating artwork became the background for an ongoing dance party with local break dance group Get Down Gang during First Night® Pittsburgh 2011. Intricate moves from the dancers and their cell phones created a visual phenomenon. Huge crowds gathered to watch the dancers and the exhibit’s vibrant energy illuminate Tito Way.

TRUST ANNOUNCES DONOR CHALLENGE This year, in an effort to bolster support for The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s initiatives and to increase the number of stakeholders in the organization, we are proud to announce our Trust Donor Challenge! Over the coming year, the Richard King Mellon Foundation has generously offered to match any new or increased portion of a repeat gift dollar for dollar. As a renewing member, the increased portion of your membership (minimum increase of $25) will be

doubled! The matching donation could also elevate your membership to the next level. For example, a previous donation of $250 plus an increase of $125 would qualify for a $125 match, thereby advancing membership status to the $500 Lead Partner level. In addition, on May 11, 2011, the Trust will participate in The Pittsburgh is Art Day of Giving through PittsburghGives. This is a twenty-four hour window during which you can maximize your giving to the Trust.

A prorated match will be made for every gift made between $15 and $10,000 from a dedicated pool created by funders specifically for this event. This gives donors a chance to increase their membership and stretch their valuable dollars even further for both themselves and The Trust. To make your gift on May 11, visit pittsburghgives.org.

Cell Phone Disco may be the first outdoor interactive lighting project to come to Pittsburgh, but it will not be the last. The Trust plans to light the way throughout The Cultural District in the future with more interactive lighting projects.

The website offers a map of all garages in the area and a drop-down menu of 20 locations, in order to match you with the garage nearest to your destination. It also indicates which parking garages are low/full, approaching capacity, and available. Hours and rates can also be accessed. The Trust proactively looks for new ways to cultivate the Cultural District and to provide a more engaging and convenient experience for the community. Over the coming months, the ParkPGH technology may be further enhanced to include other areas of Pittsburgh’s central business district. Partners of ParkPGH include Alco Parking, Carnegie Mellon University’s Traffic21 Initiative, Hillman Foundation, Numeritics, Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and Pittsburgh Parking Authority. The project was made possible by the generous support of The Benter Foundation and was built by Deeplocal.
