EDITOR'S
NOTE
I
t's unbelievable how time flies. I can't believe we are at the tail end of 2017. This year has been unique. Life has thrown all kinds of curve balls at me, I've had to duck and weave
and bounce back, but I've found that I am a better person for it. When you come out of the storm, you won't be the same person who walked in, that's what challenges are all about. I find myself more resilient. I think the most valuable lesson for me this year is self love. I've learned to love myself and be my own best friend and that has made life so much easier. We launched our November cover in a grand event and we're happy to share an overview of our launch party in this edition. I'm thankful for the love and support of our clients, team and friends. One of the stories in this issue is close to my heart. My shih tzu 'Nala' has changed my life in a lot of ways and we're happy to share similar stories of celebrity pets inside. So my dear readers without much ado presenting you the final issue of LIVING for 2017, dedicated to each one of you. May we all be resilient, brave and strong human beings.

Shashi Sutari, Vancouver, Canada I'm a budding designer from Hyderabad and came across your magazine when I was in Chennai last week. I couldn't find your magazine in a popular bookstall around our town. How do I subscribe to receive a copy? Also, are you distributing your magazine in Hyderabad too? If not, please do. I loved the tête-à-tête with Anita Dongre and would love love love to read more. Kajal Sabherwal, Hyderabad I'm writing with regards to your September edition. Small Talk Television, movies motherhood and endless work commitments; what’s your mantra for multi-tasking all of it with such great balance? I always get surprised when people ask me questions like that because it’s only during those times I realise, how many things I’m doing and how I’m juggling things. But you know what? I have a job that I love and it doesn’t feel like I’m going to work or doing something that’s burdening. Let it be motherhood, movies, television or producing, it’s just like one big play ground and I cannot wait to wake up every morning to start my day because there’s so much to do, live and experience. You only live once after all! ONE LIFE!
Do you enjoy working in the movies more or is your heart with the tele industry? Always, always, always movies first! It’s because it’s the kind of work and characters you get to play in films which you don’t get to do on television. However, I like television because it lets you be who you really are. In terms of me producing and hosting
shows, they are all relevant to today’s world. They are important shows, whether it’s ‘Memu Saitham’ or a show that I’m doing right now, ‘Fida’. I believe television takes you to your viewers’ homes and you become a part of their family; however, films give you that undeniable magic!
How hard or easy has it been living up to your father’s expectations and his legacy? I guess it’s not about it being hard or easy but accepting who I am and relishing that fact. Growing up, it was really difficult for me to understand who I was. As I got older, I realised that I’m a very lucky girl to have been born as Mohan Babu’s daughter. And there is no denying that he has given us a pedestal that not many kids would have. Now I have come to terms with all that I am and my family’s legacy. I’m truly enjoying being a part of that legacy and counting my blessings. When it comes to expectations, there’s no way I can be compared to what my father is or has achieved and all we want is to shine in his light. I think all three of us (Vishnu & Manoj) are doing great with that.
Tell us about your life before and after Nirvana’s birth? Has she changed you as a person? Absolutely! Before Nirvana was born, I thought I knew everything about life and had it all figured out. I thought my life was complete as I had a career, a great family and friends. I believed that I had everything in life going for me and thought it’ll pretty much be the same; but the day she was born, there was a massive change and shift in my physiology. I started looking at life with a completely different view. She has given me a rebirth! I found a new way to look at life and I never knew I could love so selflessly and unconditionally before she arrived in my universe.
How different is the movie industry in India and the United States? There’s no comparison in terms of the making of the film. No matter where it is, the passion and love for cinema is the same. As a matter of fact, in India we look up to cinema more than they do back in States. 12

Small Talk You’ve always lived a life of great style. Tell us three most important rules one must follow to live a life that expresses oneself the best. Thank you for the compliment. I believe each of us find our own personality. There are phases in your life when you feel like a tomboy or girly! Your style should replicate who you are and the person you recognise yourself as. I love fashion and I follow it too but not blindly. I see what’s in trend and make it my own.
Three things I can advise are: • Be true to what you like in terms of style, the cut and the design. •
Make sure you are comfortable in what you’re wearing. If you’re wearing Chanel and aren’t comfortable then there’s no point. You could wear something you picked up while street shopping and are comfortable in it; You’ll feel like a queen!
•
Knowing your body type is an important aspect when choosing your own style. What

With many reports of sexual molestation topping the headlines recently in Hollywood and also the hashtag #MeToo trending on social media has shown enormity of the issue. What’s your opinion on these reports? It’s not when it came out, it’s important that it did come out in the open. Things like these have been happening for centuries and we try to dust them and put them under the rug. It’s important to stand up and talk about it. It’s a good start to voice our

White Gold & Silver Spoons! “White gold,” as the Alba white truffle is gastronomically referred to, when not being hailed as the "white diamond,” is the most exorbitant food on earth. As the Fall/Winter season knocks on European doors, Devanshi Mody gives us an insight into this precious beauty.
A
t €7000/kg or thereabouts, it’s the ultimate epicurean luxury. It is perhaps the food of the gods. Or as close as it gets to the gods- after all, the Tartufo Bianco has been associated with Imperial Rome, the Medici, the Pope and today with Hollywood stars and Her Royal Highnesses like the Duchess of York.
The white truffle fetches media hype, amply demonstrated by the tale of the legendary
850g white truffle; auctioned over a decade ago for £28,000 (to a secretive consortium including Mick Jagger, Roman Abramovich, Paul McCartney, Sarah Ferguson and Gwyneth Paltrow in London bidding against Bono, Mel Gibson, Sharon Stone and Elle Macpherson in New York) the world's then most expensive truffle alas putrefied in London’s famous Michelin-starred restaurant Zafferano’s safe, was repatriated to Florence and interred in the grounds of the historic Cafaggiolo Medici castle, but not before an ode was recited, solemnly, in its memory. A trained truffle hunting dog with the trifolau This annually generates the crazy, crepuscular, clandestine hunts for buried treasure. Armed with dogs trained at truffle hunting schools, truffle hunters embark on arduous missions to unearth ‘white gold’. It is the scent of a woman, this pungently perfumed lady, the ‘Queen of Truffles’, that every autumn lures tourists galore to the picturesque turreted medieval town of Alba, set amid the grapevine-covered pockets on the Tanaro River valley. Their deceptiveness heightens the appeal of the Alba truffle as even experts can’t always glean the Outrageously expensive, white truffles can fetch unthinkable amounts. In 2007 a 1.2 kg white truffle auctioned for a then world-record £64,000. What makes for the white truffle’s legendary notoriety? Firstly, it is arguably the rarest food known to mankind: the uncultivable Alba truffle strictly speaking, grows only in Alba and flourishes but for two months between October-December. Further, the Alba truffle’s distinctive flavour and unique scentelusive but penetrating, redolent of ground and wood and vaguely garlicky- holds connoisseurs spellbound.

There are no criteria for assessing the quality of the white truffle– not size, shape or colour. The only way to sniff out the real thing is smell. VIPs at the auction included an Italian Olympic medallist and award-winning writer from Rwanda Scholastique Mukasonga; Italian TV presenter Ezio Greggio enlivens the 2-hour auction. The prices that year, however, disappointed. There was none of the ferocious competition to outbid rivals. Excitement was generated; however, as ever more glamorous women presided over the podium to auction ever more important truffles. Former Miss Italy auctioned the penultimate truffle culminating in the summoning of Miss Italia 2008 for the auction of the main truffle. The size of the truffle did not compare with the one last year. It was only a mere 500g. Nor was it overwhelmingly pungent. Untoward rain that season impaired the white truffle. As the world gears up to bid adieu to a year of fashion flashbacks and risquÊ couture, the last collection of the year doesn’t fail to impress! Autumn/Fall Winter collection 2017-18 was all about bold metallic overthrows and padded jackets. Haifa Emmanuel takes a look at the best of the trends from International and national runways this Fall/Winter. November - December 2017 29

Sterling Silver Padding and pleats have been in vogue since Spring/ Summer 2017. The Fall/Winter twist just makes it metallic. Sterling Silver ruled the runways at the FW17-18 fashion shows at Paris Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week. Back home in India, silver was always a huge trend, it just got international. From silver embroidery to zari work on bridal wear, this trend has made it to the bridal trousseau. Kresha Bajaj’s Koësch collection oozes with the silver charm. Comme des Garcons’ futuristic silver bubble outfits turned heads at the PFW. Chanel used plaided silver jackets over metallic pants and teamed it up with silver knee-length boots. Malaika Arora’s recent appearance at Miss Diva 2017 upped the fashion stakes as she walked-in in a shimmery gown by Maneka Harisinghani. If you haven’t got a dose of sterling silver in your festive wardrobe yet, then go for it this Christmas Koësch

Many designers opted for scarfprinted dresses on the ramp this season. Gucci has even chosen to use these prints on its footwear and stocking collection. What not to wear this Fall/Winter D&G, Michael Kors and many luxury houses have gone overboard with the leopard prints this season. Keep the animal prints minimal if you don’t want to look OTT!
Stay away from real fur coats this Winter if you’re an animal lover. We all love the fur look, however, keep it fake this Winter and go for faux fur!

Even if the gourmet farm-to-table restaurants and vinotherapy spa do not impress you, the wine tastings inside the historic wine cellar surely would. Or head to Hotel Marqués de Riscal in Elciego. That Elciego is one of Spain’s top wine producing areas – and famed for its Rioja – is a good reason. That the Frank Gehrydesigned hotel is, literally, a work of art is one more. The spa, with its Red Vine Bath and Crushed Cabernet Scrub, is a bonus. There is also the City of Wine, which houses the oldest cellars of Marqués de Riscal (from 1858) – should you need more convincing.
France France is one of the largest wine producers in the world, with winemaking here traced back to 6th century BC. An interesting fact is that most French wines were developed to accompany food, and very rarely as ‘bar wines’. Italy Home to some of the oldest wineproducing regions in the world, Italy produces about one-third of the world’s reds and whites. How to avoid the greatest threat to success? Do you ever take a step back and think about what went wrong or right in your career? Dr. Marshall Goldsmith narrates a story to illustrate how to recognise possible threats.
I
n a recent dialogue with my friend and Lifestorming co-author, Alan Weiss, we talked about the greatest threat to success and how the most successful people in the world avoid
it. The greatest threat to achieving success is not admitting we need help to get better and be the best! One thing that every great leader, athlete, and talented person has that helps make them the best at what they do is a coach. They all have help. Can you imagine Pau Gasol or Serena Williams without a coach? How about Floyd Mayweather? Of course not! Why would we think that these greats need help but we can do it by ourselves? A product of my deepest learnings over the past few years as a coach, boils down to a simple sentence, and it’s this “We all need help and it’s okay!”

November - December 2017
Brand Me When I started in the coaching field 30 years ago, no CEO would admit to having a coach. They would have been ashamed to have a coach. Today this has changed. One thing that I’m very proud of is that in my book Triggers 27 major CEOs endorsed the book. They proudly admit to getting help. To me, this is much healthier. We’ve all got behaviors we’ve been working on for decades. Say we want to be a better listener. We vow to change and yet we don’t. Why is making this promise to ourselves again today going to make us different tomorrow? It’s not. We have to admit we need help and it’s okay! Admitting we need help makes a significant positive difference for all of us. In my own life, I pay a woman to call me on the phone every day. Why? My name is Marshall Goldsmith. I’m the world’s leading executive coach. I was ranked number one leadership thinker in the world. I pay a woman to call me on the phone every day. She listens to me answer my daily questions, questions that I write and I answer, every day. Why do I do this? My name is Marshall Goldsmith. I’m too cowardly to do this by myself and too undisciplined. I need help, and it’s okay! How about you? Where are some areas where you might need a little help? Make a checklist of behaviors and actions that you want to improve on and then ask someone to help you by listening to you gauge how you’re doing every day. It’s simple and still hard to do because we have to look at ourselves every single day. We give ourselves feedback every single day and we ask someone else to help us be accountable. It’s a great tool. As my friend Alan said when we were talking about this process writing our book, “This feedback is invaluable. And that’s how we can all improve. In terms of Lifestorming, the more we think about ourselves, the more we think of ourselves, the less threatening it is to ask for help.”

Boo & Buddy Boo & Buddy were the one of the first pair of puppies to have hit the stardom on Facebook. Unfortunately Buddy passed away in September this year breaking millions of hearts. Writing a tribute Boo wrote, “I am heartbroken to tell you that I said goodbye to my best friend, Buddy, yesterday. He had 14 full years, 11 of them always by my side (or more accurately, me at his tail). All of my friends that have been following me here know that he was my best partner in crime. He was the head of our household and the best big brother I could have asked for. We are full of heartache but have so many of his memories to celebrate as you can see in the pictures: the silly moments, the divo moments, all of our holidays and celebrations together, travels and adventures, and most of all just pure love and joy. Scandinavian bedrooms usually feature a simple functional bed designed to perfection. It instantly becomes the focal point of the room without trying too hard. Showers of blessing Blessings are given in many forms in many places around the world. A touch on the head, a shower of flower petals or sprinkling of water are common symbols of blessing. The Maasai tribe of Africa, though, has a rather unusual way of invoking positive energy – it involves spitting! Unlike in most other places, where spitting at or on someone is construed as extremely insulting, when a Maasai baby is born, relatives and friends spit on the face of the new arrival. Tribesmen spit on their palms before shaking hands with an elder. And when a bride leaves her parental home for her marital one, her father spits in her face and on her breasts. She walks away without looking back, carrying his blessings with her.

Manhood is a term that lends itself to various interpretations. Many are the rites of passage associated with a boy crossing the threshold from childhood to manhood. The Sateré-Mawé people of the Amazon set a particularly painful test for their youth. Among the many creatures that inhabit the forests of South America, the bullet ant is one of the most vicious. Its name is an indication of the pain it can inflict. Tribesmen collect these ants and place them sting-up in a ‘glove’ made of leaves stitched together. To be counted a man, adolescent boys must put their hands inside these ‘gloves’ and leave them there for at least ten minutes. Not a tear must be shed. It usually takes several attempts before the boys can bear the wrath of the ants stoically. 60

Spider webs are usually seen as evidence of sloppy cleaning and embarrass the house-proud. But in the Ukraine, these webs are considered desirable, especially around Christmas. While the real thing may not be available, fake ‘webs’ are used as Christmas tree ornaments. The tradition is based on a charming story – a poor widow lived with her children in a little house which had a pine tree growing outside. Unfortunately, they did not have money to buy decorations. On the night before Christmas, the spiders heard the children crying because their tree was stark and plain. So they spun webs all over the tree. The next morning, it was a magnificent sight the rays of the sun caught the webs, turning them into fine threads of silver and gold, and the dew drops on them to shining crystals. It is believed that the tradition of decorating Christmas trees with tinsel, followed the world over today, is rooted in the Ukrainian legend.
Wedding wails Weddings are joyous occasions the world over, though they are of course tinged with the sorrow of parting, particularly for the bride and her family. A few tears are par for the course, especially on the wedding day. But the Tujia, an ethnic group in China, take this to a whole new level. Starting a month before the wedding, it is a mandatory for the bride-to-be to weep for an hour each day. After ten days, she is joined in her enforced crying jag by her mother, ten days after that by her grandmother, and other women of the household. There’s even a ‘crying song’ that the women sing. The custom is said to have originated from the time the mother of a princess broke down and wept uncontrollably before her daughter’s wedding. It probably also has something to do with neutralizing any negative energy that a wedding in the family could attract.
world in 5 Wash out the old Songkran is the Thai New Year festival. It is celebrated from April 13th to 15th, and is an occasion for much fun and frolic – mostly water-based. Starting from the tradition of pouring a bowl of scented water over relatives and friends to symbolically wash away the troubles of the old year and make way for a fresh start, it has evolved into full-fledged though good-natured water fights, played out on the streets, with tourists taking no small part in the boisterous proceedings. Water pistols, buckets and hosepipes are all brought into play. One might even get sprayed by an enthusiastic elephant! Apart from the symbolism, people are happy to have a dousing, as April is the hottest month of the year.

The Last Word
The Boy-Next-Door Born in a family of legends, Neil Nitin Mukesh has proven that he’s writing his own success story as he continues to give some of the best performances in Indian cinema. As he celebrates the success of ‘Golmaal Again’ and gears up for the release of ‘Saaho’, he speaks to Deepa Kalukuri in a candid chat about his future projects and love life. Ten years in the film industry as a leading star. What do you have to say about your journey until now? It’s been a learning experience and I was 23-years-old when I started working on ‘Johnny Gaddar’. It’s been 12 years in the film industry and I have come across many creative stalwarts. I have been through many ups and downs in my career. All of these have taught me a lot, not only about cinema but also personally. I’m proud that I have got the opportunity to some great films and have been loved by fans across the world. For three generations right from my grandfather Mukesh ji, my dad Nitin Mukesh and me, our family caters to the happiness of the audience. I still have a lot more to achieve and prove to myself.

The Last Word It’s real fun working on ‘Saaho’ and we are still filming for the movie. It’s an action thriller and is going to be huge! I don’t want to reveal much at the moment. All I have to say is that it’s been a pleasure working with Prabhas and Shraddha Kapoor. All of them in the cast are great performers. Prabhas is a darling and I went on the sets in awe. I saw ‘Baahubali’ and it made him a national icon. I have seen his films much before Baahubali released. I knew of his work all along and always liked his performances. I signed Saaho before Baahubali released so of course, I looked forward to working with him. Sujeeth and his team are extraordinary. Sabu sir and the rest of the crew are also doing a brilliant job. I’m looking forward to the release of the film. It will release hopefully mid next year.
After Katthi, you have refrained from Tamil movies, do we see you on the screen in Kollywood soon? I have been offered a Tamil movie at the moment and I’m still looking at the opportunity, however, I have not decided yet. ‘Katthi’ was my first South Indian movie and it’s very close to my heart. I would love to do many more Tamil and Telugu movies in the future. I looked forward to working with directors and stars down south.
How did you handle the failure of some of your movies in the past. What do you do the battle the pressure of a movie's success and failures? From New York to Golmaal, your roles have been diverse. Which character do you connect with the most? The one character I relate to the most is ‘Omar’ from ‘New York’. The role is the closest to me and I’m a lot like Omar in real life. I trust everyone and for me, my friends are like the purest souls. I don’t like to hurt anybody and the role was closest to these qualities of mine.
How was it working with Prabhas in Saaho? Tell us something about your role in the movie and how was the mood on the sets? 68

I believe failure is when you do not believe in yourself or role that you have portrayed. If the movie has done well at the box office but doesn’t do well for me individually then it’s a failure for me. Vice versa, if a move fails at the box office but I liked the film then that’s a successful movie for me. I loved ‘Saat Khoon Maaf’ and it was a brilliant film. Vishal Bhardwaj, Priyanka Chopra and the rest of the crew gave their best. It was way ahead of its time. However, the movie failed at the box office ‘David’ by Bejoy Nambiar was another film that is a success for me personally. Even to this day whenever I meet my friends and we discuss movies, my performance in

The recent reports and discussions on nepotism have come up in debates. Being the grandson and son of legends, do you think it's unfair to challenge star kids for following their parents' line of work?

The Last Word Someone just came up with the word, ‘nepotism’ in the recent past and thought it was cool to use it generally for everyone. If you look at the industry at the moment, most of the stars today are not star kids. From Ranveer Singh, Ayushman Khurana to Deepika Padukone, there all doing great and have worked their way up with hard work. I’m saddened by these comments. When a doctor’s child becomes a doctor do we debate that? I was born and brought up around the film industry and how will I not learn what I see every day? My grandfather and father have been such successful singers, however, I chose to be an actor. I believed I would be a better actor than a singer and so I went for it. I would also like to say, talent is not passed on! If one doesn’t have talent, he or she will not succeed. There are some megastars’ and directors’ kids who are still struggling. Look at my career; I have not always tasted success! I have had my ups and downs. Audience will not accept anyone just coz they were born into a star family. Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar are two of the most successful stars and they aren’t star kids. I never got a chance to give my opinion on this and now that you asked me, with all due respect, just using the word ‘nepotism’ to mar talents and generalising every star kid is perfect example of pseudo intelligence. Being Mukesh ji’s grandson, I’m telling you I found it extremely difficult to get my debut film. In fact, when you follow your family’s path, you have a lot more expectations to live up to. I find it unfair that we are debating on it. Again, everyone has a right to their opinion.
I would also like to say, talent is not passed on! If one doesn’t have talent, he or she will
