Holidays Around the World

Mexico has many different ways in which people celebrate Christmas, but the one we do in my family begins the morning of the 24th, when all my aunts and my uncles come to my house where we spend the day preparing dishes like cold pasta, apple salad, pork leg, agua de horchata y jamaica among other deliciousness. After all is set, we change and head for church, after mass is done, we come home and have dinner. Most of the time, my family returns to their houses by midnight and return the next morning to eat pancita or pozole and whatever was left from the day before. To me, it is one of the most important times of the year and I spend it with my family every year. LovelyMiwakko7399 Menna Mexico Layout Director

My family’s traditions at christmas time are very special to me. On Christmas eve, it was a tradition growing up to open brand new pajamas and slippers to sleep in for Christmas morning. I loved the excitement and intrigue, receiving some brand new comfortable sleepwear to wake up with on Christmas morning! Another tradition we have is, after we open presents, we always make Eggs Benedict, with our own homemade hollandaise sauce! I always look forward to Christmas eve, and Christmas breakfast the most! Cali Karsin USA, Hungarian Co-Publisher & Editor-in-Chief

I come from a traditional country, which is Poland. We celebrate Christmas mostly on the 24th of December, when my family is having dinner. When we see the first star in the sky, we all make wishes and share wafer, which is Polish tradition. Later, we start to eat, on the table there are always twelve dishes, which is a symbol of twelve apostles. We sing Christmas carols, and talk. At the end, we run to the Christmas tree to open our gifts. At Christmas day, we always have breakfast with so much food! I always look forward to Christmas. It is always opportunity to spend time with family, and slow down a bit. Carmen Hoyes Poland Photographer

My culture’s Christmas traditions have been around before the 3rd century and my people have maintained the ancient tradition to this day. Historical fact: We are 20 years older than Rome and are the first Christians. In my family, we do celebrate American Christmas. However our Christmas goes on longer and past the New Year. For me, Christmas is on January 6th. On New Year’s day, in the morning, we go to church. For us, New Year is special. Church conducts a ceremony called, “Blessing of the Water,” during which the priest uses a basil-leaf wand to sprinkle water on the congregation. What we say to each other in the morning of New Year is, “Shnorhavor Nor Daree yev Soorp Dzuhnoont”. Rose Athena Uros (Djroseathena) USA, Armenian Model

My family traditions have changed since the passing of my father. We used to travel to Georgia on Christmas eve to have gift exchange with my dad’s side of the family. Once he passed, we stopped going, so now my daughter and I bake cookies for Santa and make sure the stockings are set up and I wait patiently for her to go to sleep so I can play Santa. Then, about two hours after I get it all set up, she wakes up and I get to take photos of her being all surprised at what she gets. Luckily, she hasn’t been the type to snoop to find out what she’s getting, although I think now, I’ll have to find better hiding spots for her presents this year as she’s gotten sneaky.

We have a traveling book......on Christmas Eve we get the whole family together for a white elephant gift exchange. This means, we take something from our home that we don’t use or want and gift it. Well, this traveling book is also in the mix.....whoever ends up with the book has to record the family events for the year like marriages and babies and this is an amazing way to keep journals of our family. Solde Rothmanay USA, German Non-Practicing Jewish Writer & Photographer Photo by Aria Desantos

Christmas eve, I usually go to my former in-laws so that both mom and dad can be with their kids, (my ex and I) and we open presents for all the kids, and White Elephants for everyone over 18. Then my daughters go back to their mom’s overnight, and I pick them up after they’ve had a chance to do Christmas morning at her house. Then I cook a big dinner Christmas night, usually steak and local dungeness crab, with potatoes, salad, SF Sourdough bread and spend the evening with my two daughters, giving them gifts. I fill their stockings up with different types of chocolate. Then on the 26th, they go back to their mom’s. After that, I binge drink tequila until New Years. Making Dreams Come True

LICK Sim & Set Design

Writer Cali Karsin Photographer Jackson Redstar & Photos Provided

Have you ever had a vision, a dream, an original idea, or true passion you were destined to set out to create? Have you ever wanted to create that perfect place in Second Life®, and just didn’t know where to start? If the answer is yes, you’ve come to the right place. LICK Sim & Set Design is one of the top landscaping brands in SL making dreams come true, one parcel at a time. Their slogan is, “DARE TO DREAM.” I sat warm and cozy by the fireplace in the new Winter Wonderland build, toasting my hands against the scorching flames of the fire. Sitting down in a plush armchair, I take out my notes and get ready to interview the brainchild behind LICK, Sera Bellic, who has been a resident of SL for over seven years! We greet each other warmly, and I take a sip of my hot cocoa before I begin. I decide, the very first thing I want to know more about, is her back story that led her to where she is today. She says her brand was born from her love to create beautiful, enchanting spaces, and she has come a long way, with spending over five of her years in SL doing landscape, interior, and set designs for builds like the LICK-Winter Wonderland, Country Home, A Road Less Traveled, and A Victorian Peace. Her mission with her brand is simple, to bring YOUR dreams to life and to create a home or business that her customers will be proud to show off. She goes on to explain how she discovered her passion in SL, “A friend messaged me one night and said she just got some new land, would I come help her fix it up? I said yes, and that night I was in my element. I did not want to log off, I was on a roll. It was then, I realized this is what I am passionate about. Taking a piece of flat land and creating 64

a dream, something magical...and that is when LICK Sim & Set Design was created.” She pulls most of her inspiration from real life movies, pictures, someone else’s work, and things she sees day to day in her life. When clients come to her and explain what they want, she can draw on real life memories or pictures she has seen and just go with it. Sometimes it takes her a bit longer to get going, she puts items down, picks them up, and then suddenly, something works, and she finds herself on a roll. “SL is a challenge at times to find certain items that I want to use, but so far, I have found a way to marry items to make it work when I can’t find what I want,” she explains. Bellic changes her land design every three months in SL to show her versatile diversity as a sim designer. She tells me fondly of her panic moments during her design process, how she accidentally returned a build after it was three quarters of the way done, and the anxiety of seeing two weeks of her work down the drain, until she realized she could restore to her last position. She also tells me fondly of the time she got stuck under a house, “All I needed to do was TP out, but nooo, I sat there going, oh shit! That stuff usually happens late at night when I am tired and not thinking clearly,” she laughs. A funny story that happened during her design career is, one time she TP’ed into a client’s office with no pants on! She could see them on her screen, but the clients could not, and they did not say anything until about 45 minutes after she was there! “The guy finally says, nice tattoo! I was like, oh thanks, then he mentions what it looks like and I’m thinking, how does he see that part of it, it’s on my ass!” When she was thinking of a company name, she wanted something catchy and sensual in a sense. She believes sex sells, and she wears a tag over her head that reads, “LICK SERA BELLIC,” for free advertising. One night her partner of three years, says, “LICK you later baby!” It was in that moment, the name was born! Cultured The Magazine - the holiday issue

She is available for hire for interior design as well, and by joining the LICK group, you have access to rez rights on all her lands and builds. There is also an exciting contest every year that gives away up to a half sim of a free sim design. We can look forward to the next contest sometime next year! What sets her apart from all the other sim designers out there is her passion for what she does and her work ethic that she brings from real life, and an eye for what looks good, as well as her reasonable pricing. Right now, you have access to her brand new holiday and winter build, which is great for pictures, and enjoying the holiday season! There is tons of activities to do with loved ones, and in the words of Bellic, she explains the sim like this, “LICK Winter Wonderland will be up until the end of January. You can visit The Island of Misfit Toys, take a dog sled ride, go sledding, have a snowball fight, make snow angels, build snowmen, sit by the campfire chatting with friends, go ice fishing, and don’t forget to visit Santa’s house, work shop and stables.” Next up is the exciting tropical rain forest which will be on display in the spring of 2015! You can check out the current winter build with the landmark below, and view her past work on her Flickr! https://www.facebook.com/pages/LICK-Sim-Set-Design/43351 5966783174?sk=timeline https://www.flickr.com/photos/sera_bellic/ http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Oyster%20 Bay/63/205/22
