WELCOME Each year, in August, Irish artists arrive in Edinburgh, ready for the opportunities that participation in the world’s largest performing arts market presents. These artists follow in the footsteps of the many Irish who have travelled over many decades and who have achieved great successes, winning awards and critical acclaim and securing further international tours, growing new audiences and reaching new territories. This year, Culture Ireland continues its Edinburgh Showcase and I am delighted to present details of this year’s programme. This programme includes many artists who are presenting in Edinburgh for the first time and many others who are returning, aware of the opportunities that a run in Edinburgh offers. I wish them all the very best of luck, sincerely hoping that all their hard work pays off with enthusiastic and numerous audiences and further invitations to perform elsewhere. 4

Culture Ireland’s activities are central to the Government of Ireland’s Global Ireland 2025 initiative. Global Ireland places an unprecedented emphasis on the importance of Ireland’s arts and culture on the world stage, recognising that culture enables us to connect with others. Culture Ireland’s Edinburgh Showcase allows Irish artists to reach not alone a Scottish audience but also the international visitors the highly regarded Edinburgh Festivals attract throughout the month of August. This programme at Edinburgh would not be possible without the hospitality of our presenting partners and we are grateful to the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Dance Base, Pleasance, Summerhall, Traverse, Assembly Festival and the Edinburgh International Book Festival for their ongoing commitment to Irish artists and their work. Whether you are an audience member, performer, writer or a presenter, I hope you have an enjoyable and successful Festival in 2019. Josepha Madigan, TD minister for culture, heritage and the gaeltacht

Gina Moxley and Abbey Theatre

THE PATIENT GLORIA By Gina Moxley Inspired by the 1965 films Three Approaches To Psychotherapy (The Gloria films), this provocative and upfront meditation on therapy and female desire in a new political context where misogyny is the winning ticket is a mash up of re-enactment, real footage, lived experience and a punk gig. An experimental extravaganza featuring ‘the bawdiest performance of the year’ (EXEUNT MAGAZINE), The Patient Gloria is ‘very funny, very explicit and very sobering’ (SUNDAY INDEPENDENT). And therapeutic. It’s very therapeutic. The Patient Gloria wowed audiences at the Abbey Theatre during its sold-out world premiere at the 2018 Dublin Theatre Festival.
