EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL THEATRE

John Kane sits on a hospital trolley. Very shortly, a giant lobster, two women called Mary, a very old man and a jazz percussionist arrive. Then everything starts. Medicine is a dark and frequently absurdist work that shatters the boundary between cast and audience. It is a devastatingly funny and moving meditation on how, for decades, we have treated those we have called ‘mentally ill’. Featuring a sensational cast – Clare Barrett, Aoife Duffin and Domhnall Gleeson, with drummer, Seán Carpio – Enda Walsh once again shines a light on the darkest corners of our collective stories. Medicine is presented by Edinburgh International Festival in association with the Traverse Theatre. Developed with the support of the National Theatre, London.

EDINBURGH FRINGE THEATRE

The climate apocalypse has hit. Dublin is completely underwater. Best friends Bláthnaid and Debs are the sole survivors, living on the top floor of Liberty Hall. With only seagulls for company, they spend their days sheltering from the storms and reminiscing over the last days of Dublin. Debs looks to the future, but Bláthnaid is tormented by guilt. Why were they blind to the wave that was coming? And can they salvage a future from the wreckage? Afloat explores loss, sisterhood, and climate anxiety. EDINBURGH FRINGE THEATRE

Charlie is a kleptomaniac – the doctor told her. Reckons it stems from childhood trauma. But she has the robbin’ completely under control these days. For real. She has a bit of a mouth on her, but she’s only trying to be funny, give everyone a laugh, not cause trouble, like. Not today, of all days. See, she loves that little boy more than she ever thought it was possible to love another human. There’s a lot riding on these 24 hours and if she just keeps her head down, maybe she’ll get him back. HHHH “As writer Monnelly’s own lifts are so subtle that you barely notice how well she has raided the eternal vaults of good storytelling. Charlie’s odyssey is immediate and gripping, helped along by writing that is deftly comic and evocative” The Irish Times “Charlie’s a Clepto is utterly absorbing, the underlying pathos pulling at your heart strings as you will the determined little protagonist on to win out. Clare Monnelly delivers her own play with heartfelt sincerity and a huge load of talent” The Independent Presented as part of Assembly Festival On Demand Filmed by Media Coop as part of Pumphouse Presents in association with Dublin Port Co. EDINBURGH FRINGE THEATRE

This is CITY. You know it. Maybe you live here, but you’ve probably never heard it before. Performed from the inside out, using fourteen intersecting streets, three time periods and a stretch of bog in the midlands. With occasional nineteenth century ocean-liners. This is a show about the weight of a lifetime’s discarded stories and about keeping going, even when the shop lights are off and the last taxi’s long gone. “Overall CITY is a remarkable piece, inspired by the pandemic, stoic and lyrical, and well delivered by its author” Emer O’Kelly, The Sunday Independent “Beautifully filmed, with commendable sound design by Fiona Sheil and a sensitively physical performance from McCarthy” Sara Keating, The Sunday Business Post “McCarthy himself is a warm and subtle stage presence; he flits amongst accents and personae with ease. Director Niall Cleary enhances the show with elegant gestural touches” Katy Hayes, The Independent on Saturday Hanan Sheedy Lighting Design Fiona Sheil Sound Design Deirdre Dwyer Costume Ais Brady Graphic Design

“I am not a hologram, I’m a beating heart. I’m a living thing.” Puck Tyrrell is waiting for a boat. He hasn’t gone to work today. He has probably lost his job anyway. Puck’s had a run of good luck lately; first the allotment, then the free ticket to Heebie Jeebies and the new job; the newest recruit at the Academy of Holodramatic Arts, where algorithms do all the heavy thinking; those algorithms just can’t get enough in the Unity quest to create “art without artists”; studying the freaks, creating the data. An exciting new filmic/stage collaboration between Laura Sheeran and Little John Nee; Drone Bone Jetty, like their last collaboration Radio Rosario, is set in a not too distant dystopian future in the west of Ireland.

EDINBURGH FRINGE THEATRE

Acclaimed Irish comedian Tadhg Hickey brings you his weird and wonderful part theatre, part stand-up comedy show, In One Eye, Out The Other. The show tells the story of Feargal, the downtrodden but cheery man who fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming an alcoholic. Using the Catholic calendar as a roadmap, Feargal leads us on a surreal and hilarious journey with many poignant twists in the hope of arriving at a sort of light at the end of the tunnel for the ‘bright man’. The show is loosely based on Tadhg’s own journey with alcoholism and has had Irish audiences – including many who’ve been affected by alcoholism – flocking to the show. In One Eye, Out the Other has had three sell out runs in Dublin. “Both funny and poignant; a brave, risky performance. This is exciting work” The Independent “Illuminating. Affecting in surprising ways. Feargal’s story will stay with you for days” Sunday Business Post “A vital catharsis. I laughed until I cried.” Sunday Independent Claire O’Connell Producer/Stage Manager Eoin Winning Set & Lighting Design Brian Lane Music/Sound Design Ciara Coleman-Geaney Costume Design Producer Claire O’ Connell clairemarie.oconnell@gmail.com +353 (86) 345 0504

In 2019, Fede and his 74 year old mother, set off on a quest through Havana to look for América. Shared memories, conflicting recollections, and offline maps led them through their past. A past peopled with ghosts scattered among grand avenues, dark lanes and unnerving dead ends in the city that had taken them in more than 30 years before, when following his Father’s arrest by a Military Junta, five year old Fede and his family were forced to flee the Salvadoran Civil war. Looking for América charts two journeys. The journey of that night in Havana looking for a Salvadoran ex-Guerilla fighter and the journey of escaping the catastrophe that had engulfed Fede’s country decades before. A catastrophe whose after effects still resonate today Sometimes the idea of home has to be remade. And remade. And remade. “effortlessly engaging performance … welcome, vital; González’s story may be a personal one but it has deep political resonance with our own time” The Irish Times
