Culture Means Business

1

Liverpool's Cultural Business Directory. This directory is designed to connect businesses with the cultural organisations of Liverpool, by outlining the products and services they can provide across a wide range of sectors. The city is home to a host of world class and cutting edge organisations which can offer businesses innovative, creative and practical solutions to their commercial requirements. In a time when traditional funding streams are drying up, we hope this publication will encourage commercial organisations large and small to think about buying from and working with these valuable community based organisations when making purchasing decisions.

Welcome Events, the arts and cultural activity have always been integral to the character of this city. This sector gives us an individuality and a resonance far beyond these shores. We are proud of the diversity and the range of cultural organisations that are based here in Liverpool but also those that choose this city to showcase their art. As a port we are open to inspiration from far and near. These organisations produce a distinctive and compelling cultural offer that brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city each year, whilst also generating enormous civic pride amongst our residents. I have great ambition for this city and culture to me is the rocket fuel for its continuing regeneration. We know the feel-good benefits and the economic impact that culture brings, it sustains and attracts jobs and is the lifeblood of the fast growing visitor economy. Liverpool has well documented evidence on the importance of culture to the economy and the return on investment the arts generate but it is the intangible benefits that excite me most; the confidence that comes from taking part, the sense of wonder that comes from experiencing something outside of the everyday, the aspiration that comes from the unlocking of the imagination. Creativity will run through all our services, it will enable us to do things differently, to engage in new ways of doing things in the challenging times that are ahead. There has been a huge amount achieved in the last ten years but we have to maintain the momentum created since European Capital of Culture 2008. We will do this by challenging ourselves and others to continue to drive the cultural agenda through the years ahead. The city’s offer will surprise, delight and inspire. Liverpool will be a distinctive global city. Anything less is simply not good enough.

Joe Anderson OBE Mayor of Liverpool 5

Based on FACT’s strong track record of producing creative community engagement projects, FACT were appointed by Your Housing to work with them on a campaign with The Dogs Trust to promote messages around responsible dog ownership to children and their communities in the North Liverpool area. As a result the students produced an animated story DVD to help promote the key messages, which was used by Your Housing and the Dogs Trust with other schools and communities. Metal Culture facebook.com /pages/Metal-Liverpool /211640215543506T: /MetalLiverpool

Metal was founded by Jude Kelly OBE in 2002 and was created as an artistic laboratory to champion the need for continual investment in artistic investigation and the development of innovative ideas that could shift the thinking in the UK cultural sector. We run spaces in Liverpool, Peterborough and Southend-on-Sea. We have been active in Liverpool since 2004 providing innovative, multi-disciplinary residency space for artists from the UK and overseas in the neighbourhood of Kensington and Edge Hill. In 2009 we made Edge Hill Station our permanent home, having raised funds to renovate the historic buildings and bring them back into a creative and cultural use. From this base, we are working to provide the catalyst to transform the potential for and access to, arts and culture for people of all ages and from all walks of life within our neighbourhood and across Liverpool.

24

Project: Time and Space Residency Metal has nine Time and Space residencies to offer each year. Three in Southend / three in Liverpool / three in Peterborough. The residencies are made by application. Artists who are awarded the residencies have access to fully funded dedicated workspace, flexibility to its use, access to Metal staff for advice and mentoring, use of resources and exposure on Metal's website, social media and e-news. Daniel Thorne, a composer and musician, used his residency to establish a new music ensemble for Liverpool, combining world class musicians with the region's most innovative musical voices. Daniel Thorne premiered the first concert of the Immix Ensemble at the Bluecoat and has raised enough funding for three more concerts. Each concert features the work of a classically trained composer alongside that of a boundarypushing songwriter, band or sounds artist, with the aim of bringing together like-minded musicians and sowing the seeds for future collaborations. Ten more time and space residency artists have been selected with a variety of projects and from a broad spectrum of artistic disciplines.

“My Time and Space residency has given me the opportunity to create a new music ensemble that aims to champion the work of Liverpool's forward-thinking composers, songwriters, bands and sound artists. The assistance I have received from Metal has been invaluable: Metal's guidance has helped me secure Arts Council funding for the ensemble, has assisted greatly in organising our concerts and undertaking press/ promotional activities, and has provided us with a rehearsal space. Put simply, this project would not be happening were it not for the support and generosity of Metal Liverpool during my residency.

I have worked at First Take for 21 years. It’s an amazing place to work. We make films. But not just any films. We make films that make a difference. And that’s why it’s amazing. Because they do. We work in diverse communities and our films raise awareness, understanding and address misconceptions. One of our award-winning films changed policy in mental health care. Another received official selection for Los Angeles Women’s International Film Festival and played on Sunset Boulevard. Our 8-part documentary series ‘High Hopes’, a co-production with a Norwegian film company, was broadcast throughout Europe. Our latest film, which I directed, is ‘Big Society The Musical’. It is a feature length film, a personal drama set against the backdrop of the cuts, using film music and dance to illustrate how the cuts agenda is neglecting the young and vulnerable. We engaged hundreds of people across Liverpool, all working to the same end, to create a piece of work that makes a difference. Throughout the making of this film, First Take

worked with over 350 members of the community, 9 writers, 23 trainee filmmakers, 28 actors, 1 composer, 1 choreographer, 41 dancers, 25 singers, 5 skateboarders, 2 skaters and 27 local businesses. The film was selected to open the London Labour Film Festival 2014 and is receiving brilliant reviews. We couldn’t have made this film without the support from the community but also without the support from businesses. First Take now needs continued sponsorship from ethical businesses to support their feature film programme ‘Moviepool’, which will create a feature film every two years, from the heart of a diverse community." Project: Case Studies / Young Minds ‘Case Studies’ is a series of 7 short films, which are drama re-enactments of real life case studies, based on true accounts from young people who have endured suffering either through bereavement, trauma, identity, sexuality or gender issues, or because of speech, language or communication problems. First Take worked with some of the key UK practitioners working within mental health care for young people to identify the case studies and devise the dramas. The films are aimed at people who are working with young people who have, or are at risk of getting, mental health problems. The films deal specifically with each theme, with each scene raising poignant questions. These questions become discussion points to identify specific problems and show ways of dealing with them.

“First Take completely understood the brief and flew with it, creating films that do much more than we had originally anticipated. The whole process, including initial ideas meetings with experts, drafts of scripts, through to the finished films, and their distribution, was enjoyable, inspiring and produced outstanding results that are already making a huge impact." Damian Hart, Principal Development Manager, Young Minds

Seven films are completed, each dealing with specific problems. These films are presently being used as part of a national touring Master Class given by Young Minds but they are also being developed to form part of an online tuition programme.

BasecampCreativeHub @Pacificstream

“We, that is Ray Haigh, Jon Holmes, CEO of Milky Tea and myself, decided to set up Basecamp as a creative hub for start-up creatives so that they would benefit from specialist support, an inexpensive professional environment and significantly be based in the creative quarter of Liverpool. We wished to address existing problems with generic business support which is not tailored towards creativity, provide designers with ways of using their talents commercially and get them to recognize the importance of their intellectual property and to encourage designers to work collaboratively and share innovative business solutions. Basecamp has been recognised internationally as one of the top creative incubators in the World and we have hosted visitors from governments here and abroad. We also encourage our young enterprises to think ‘internationally’ and we have been successful with EU initiatives to support collaborative work across Europe. Currently we are working with 20 European business hubs to provide cooperation for Web and Mobile Applications (WMA) based entrepreneurship, to accelerate the internationalisation of two-hundred start-ups.” Roy Jones MFA FRSA Director

74

Project: Jonzo JONZO consists of Lottie Brzozowski and Rachel Davey two recent graduates of the Graphic Arts program at LJMU, that wished to set up a Risograph print and design studio. They had both worked on a Risograph for their illustration and graphic design work at university. Risograph prints have a unique quality and Jonzo was set up so that Lottie and Rachel could continue having access to a printer for their own work but also make a business out of providing the only Risograph facility in the area. They needed studio space and advice on setting up their business. Our creative hub provided the ideal environment for their enterprise and we were able to provide ‘on hand’ advice not only for the business planning they needed but also providing support for their individual creative practice. In April Jonzo launched with an exhibition of artists/ designers work produced on Jonzo’s Risograph printer. The event was a success and created a ‘buzz’ around Liverpool with articles and online publicity from local publishers and Skinny magazine. They received some financial support from JMU Art School to support their rental costs for Basecamp up to August 2014. They now have a number of regular clients and bespoke projects in the pipeline. Current work includes printing for Tusk Journal and posters for Sound City 2014.

"We've been in Basecamp for the past 3 months and during that time we've turned it into a second home. For us it's important to have a creative and comfortable studio space as we believe studio culture is incredibly important in the running of a successful creative business. Basecamp has been integral for us to be able to get off the ground, we have some bulky equipment to house which is more than welcome in the studio, and we're grateful for that! During our time here we've put on a successful launch exhibition, made some great contacts and started to build an exciting client base." Candice Follett, Belvedere Academy

“The Windows Project (WP) was founded in 1976 by Dave Ward and Dave Calder to run games-based poetry workshops in Liverpool playschemes. Since then WP has expanded its programme to run creative writing and art workshops throughout Merseyside and the North West in schools, libraries, community centres, day centres and care homes. WP has recruited over 30 writers and artists from a diverse range of disciplines, backgrounds and cultures including performance poetry, rap, storytelling, scriptwriting, authors, dancers, origami and mural artists. WP also runs a recruitment and training programme for new and emerging writers. Dave Ward, Co-ordinator

82

Project: Culture Liverpool In May 2013 WP was commissioned by Culture Liverpool to run writing activities as part of In Other Words festival to celebrate the re-opening of Liverpool Central Library. In schools pupils from 12 schools (Yr1 to Yr9) were invited to create poems celebrating their favourite books, their favourite characters and their love of libraries and reading.

“The poems really are very impressive. The workshop was fantastic.” Candice Follett, Belvedere Academy

In Liverpool One shopping centre, WP arranged for 3 different storytellers to tell stories to family groups, young people and ‘children of all ages’. Sessions were held outdoors on Chavasse Park and also in the indoor covered area outside the Odeon Cinema. In cafes and restaurants, WP writers acted as ‘poetry waiters’ offering specially devised poetry menus, including word games, poetry puzzles, the chance to write your own poem and the opportunity to have a poem read to you at your table – to customers at three city centre café restaurants as well at the opening ceremony for In Other Words at St. George's Hall. • Schools: Approx 540 pupils took part. A selection of poems was included in a specially produced booklet THE BEST BOOK EVER! which was distributed to guests along with the commemorative brochure on the night of the reopening of Central Library. Three pupils from Belvedere Academy came to the library the following morning and were interviewed for BBC Radio Merseyside as ‘the first young people through the door’. • Storytelling: Approx 800 people were involved, either as active participants or as onlookers. A teacher booked one of the storytellers to visit their school as a result of seeing the session. • Café Restaurants: Approx 400 customers were actively involved – either solving puzzles, composing poems or listening to poems performed. 83

Open Culture

culture.org.uk

facebook.com/ OpenCultureLiverpool @OpenCulture

Open Culture is a social enterprise with the purpose to increase the profile of, and engagement with, arts and culture in Liverpool and Merseyside. Open Culture stage cultural events for people to engage with the arts in new or unusual ways and offer unique platforms for performers, artists and other arts organisations to reach new audiences. Open Culture also offer a range of paid services, which help to fund our free services; these include project development, consultancy, evaluation, and press and marketing services. Project: LightNight LightNight is Liverpool’s one-night arts and culture festival taking place annually in May. Over 50 city centre organisations keep their galleries, museums and venues open until late, staging around 100 special cultural events

98

Liverpool’s first LightNight took place in 2010 with the 2013 audience visits recorded as 42,968 in 2013 and estimates for 2014 at 65,000. The event is a pathway to overcoming some of the negative perceptions associated with the night-time economy, creating a safer more ‘audience friendly’ city centre at night, a cultural tool to invigorate the city’s cultural economy, and act as a strong reminder of the year round cultural offer. LightNight gives the cultural community a platform to create an eclectic programme of arts and culture activities and partnerships concentrated into a single evening. Participating venues include the likes of Walker Art Gallery, FACT, Tate Liverpool, the Bluecoat, Liverpool Cathedral, the Mersey Tunnel, Museum of Liverpool, St Georges Hall and Liverpool Town Hall, with events ranging from a candle lit labyrinth to major international exhibitions to large-scale light projections. Liverpool’s LightNight is the largest in the national Museums at Night campaign. LightNight offers residents and visitors the opportunity to experience the city together, from a new perspective; doing something different on a Friday night! It is a chance for everyone to come together and celebrate the city, positively profiling everything that is good about Liverpool, focusing on shared culture, history and identity. The scope for LightNight is huge. With continued support it will become an internationally known arts festival, reinforcing Liverpool’s reputation as a world-class culturally vibrant destination. Similar events around the world take place with much success; Paris’ ‘Nuit Blanche’ generates one million visits every year with a similar number of attractions.

“LightNight at the Walker Art Gallery really struck a chord with our visitors and led to one of our busiest ever evenings… which caught the attention of the regional media resulting in BBC TV coverage throughout the day and during the coveted teatime slot” Ann Flenley, National Museums Liverpool “Commercial District BID was delighted to be involved in LightNight, by not supporting events in the BID area but also by sponsoring the event. LightNight far exceeded our expectations and as soon as the event finished we were already discussing what we can do to help make the next event bigger and better.” Kevin Whittaker, Commercial District BID

PR coverage this year estimated at over £150k with spots on regional ITV Granada and BBC North West news, a feature in Museums at Night BBC2 Documentary and live broadcast from the Walker Art Gallery on the day of the festival.
