Introduction

Belfast Music Week returns for a third time in 2012, celebrating local talent and industry achievement from 4-11 November. As before, the programme involves rock, alternative, classical, traditional, dance culture and many excellent songwriters. It’s a chance to appreciate Belfast as a thriving musical city and a place that sustains regular nights, festivals with character and a variety of scenes. The city is also known for its hospitality, and increasing numbers of visitors are drawn by its sound, its culture and its style.

Belfast Music Week began in September 2010. This bold idea was embraced by the promoters, the bands and the local entrepreneurs. In 2011, the week was scheduled in the runup to the MTV EMAs, when the international media were in town and Belfast was able to reveal its unique personality. There were over 170 events in 45 venues, encouraging more than 33,000 people to enjoy our homegrown musical talent. Belfast Music Week 2012 will see gigs popping up in some of the most unexpected places, from the Victorian Palm House in Botanic Gardens to the Europa Bus Station. Twelve of our most exciting acts will showcase at The Limelight, dance culture will be explored at the Ulster Hall and more than 70 other city venues are represented. It’s a chance to see legends and breaking talent, to appreciate the ongoing success stories and a musical city that continues to make us proud.

Belfast City Council’s Belfast Music Week is co-ordinated by the Oh Yeah Music Centre and supported by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, Belfast Visitor and Convention Bureau, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Invest NI, Tourism Ireland and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure.

‘What We See’: Two Door Cinema Club documentary premiere Queen’s Film Theatre, 7pm, £3, 028 9097 1097 www.queensfilmtheatre.com

‘What We See’ is a documentary film by Babysweet following Two Door Cinema Club across numerous European Festivals in 2012. Shot on one camera by one person, the film showcases numerous intimate moments from the road as the band prepare for a world tour that will see them spend another year away from home. “When we started touring, touring was like this all-

consuming force. It just sort of took every single part of my life and touring became my life. The past few years have sort of been not necessarily a struggle, but a learning curve. So it’s learning to be in touch with the people you leave behind and learning to just deal with the ridiculousness of it all.” Alex Trimble.

Belfast City Council Industry Panels

Thoughts on the music industry past and present

10am - 12pm, Group Space, the Ulster Hall

Music is a fundamental expression of human creativity. It permeates our lives and surrounds us, and is a crucial part of who we are. It’s also a massive global industry, generating substantial economic value - and now going through major changes. This panel will examine the changes in the industry, the importance of a sound business infrastructure and take a look at how local companies can be key players in this sector. Chris Panayi - CC Panayi business affairs Jim Chancellor - Managing Director Fiction Records Steve Farris - Polar Patrol Publishing Mark Holbrough - Swansfield music Chris Panayi CCP is now in its 32nd year, specialising in the Music and Entertainment industries. The business has grown to include two further partners and 20 staff working with clients such as Snow Patrol, Kate Nash, Rumer, Emeli Sandé, Ladyhawke, Tulisa, The Foals, The Cribs, My Bloody Valentine, Band of Skulls, Rudimental, Disclosure, Kyla La Grainge and many others. 38

Jim Chancellor Fiction Records was founded in 1978 by Chris Parry. In the early nineties the label was bought by Polydor where it lay effectively dormant for a decade apart from the occasional Cure release. In 1992 the imprint achieved its first #1 record in The Cure’s album Wish, which reached the top of the charts in the United Kingdom. The first release on the “new” Fiction was the Snow Patrol single “Run”, which entered the UK chart at #5. The subsequent Snow Patrol album Final Straw has since gone on to sell over 2 million copies around the world. The current Fiction stable includes Ian Brown, elbow and Kaiser Chiefs.

Friday 9 November

Local artists, local support! 2pm - 4pm Group Space, the Ulster Hall

In today’s music industry, successful careers are now primarily driven directly by the artists themselves. While many have their sights on international markets and development opportunities, many are not aware of the support and opportunities available on their own doorstep. Local companies Smalltown America, Start Together and No Dancing will provide a useful insight into the local industry and how they support local artists, while Claire Thomas, Executive Producer of BBC Introducing, and Jordan Whitmore of Atlantic Records will outline how unsigned, undiscovered and under the radar musicians across the UK can tap into additional opportunities. Claire Thomas - BBC Introducing Jordan Whitmore - Atlantic Records Rocky O’Reilly - Producer Jimmy Devlin - No Dancing Andrew Ferris - Owner SmallTown America Records

Claire Thomas Claire Thomas is the Executive producer of BBC Introducing, the BBC wide initiative that supports unsigned, undiscovered and under the radar musicians across the UK. She is responsible for developing and delivering the opportunities for new musicians across the BBC, including the BBC Introducing stages, sessions and spots on the Radio 1 playlist. Jordan Whitmore Jordan is part of the talent scouting A&R department at Atlantic Records which plays home to artists such as ‘Death Cab for Cutie’, ‘Jason Mraz’ and ‘Missy Elliott’. In addition Jordan also works for Brighton based music supervision company ‘Soundworks’. Graduated from BIMM in 2010 with a BA (Hons) in Professional Musicianship.
