Réamhfhocal

Foreword

Fáilte go dtí Féile An Droichead 2012.

Welcome to Féile An Droichead 2012. I’m delighted to welcome you to this fantastic cultural festival, now in its fourth year

Tá lúcháir orm bheith ag cur fáilte romhaibh go dtí an Fhéile chultúrtha iontach seo, agus í anois ina ceathrú bliain.

Féile An Droichead is the highpoint of An Droichead’s year, and it is the best example of the kind of organisation and the kind of community we are – a vibrant, welcoming community of Gaels who value education, youth, families, and reconciliation initiatives that attract all of Belfast’s identities to the Irish language.

Is í Féile An Droichead buaicphointe na bliana d’An Droichead, agus gan amhras is í an sampla is fearr den chineál eagraíochta agus den chineál pobail atá ionainn – pobal Gaelach atá oscailte bríomhar agus a chuireann béim ar leith ar oideachas, ar óige, ar theaghlaigh, agus ar thionscnaimh athmhuintearais a mheallann muintir Bhéal Feirste ó achan chúlra chun na Gaeilge.

We also like enjoying ourselves of course, and there is no doubt that this programme has plenty in it that can give everyone the chance to escape and spend a couple of great days among old friends – or to make new ones.

Is dream muid fosta a chuireann béim ar spraoi is ar chraic ar ndóigh, agus is cinnte go bhfuil go leor sa chlár seo a thabharfaidh deis do dhuine ar bith le héalú agus cúpla lá den scoth a chaitheamh i measc seanchairde – nó le cairde úr-nua a dhéanamh.

With this programme we’re celebrating links that we’ve developed over recent times with new friends of our own, and I want to pay tribute to those who support our work on a daily basis, from our neighbouring community groups, our friends in the GAA, local businesses – especially those who are partners in our membership scheme – and the courageous groups and individuals from the Unionist community who are without doubt leaders in their own right, helping us to promote interest in Irish in areas of Belfast where the language hasn’t been heard for a long number of years. This festival should be a source of pride for you all and I really hope that you will benefit from your association with An Droichead. Fair play to you.

Leis an chlár seo tá muid ag ceiliúradh cuid gaolta atá daingnithe againn thar cúpla bliain le cairde úra dár gcuid féin, agus tréaslaím dóibh siúd a thacaíonn le hobair s’againn ó lá go lá, bíodh siad ina ngrúpaí pobail eile, ár gcairde sna cumainn CLG, na gnólachtaí áitiúla – go háirithe iad siúd atá ina gcomhpháirtithe i scéim bhallraíochta s’againn – agus na daoine is na grúpaí cróga sa phobal Aontachtach atá ina gceannairí ag cuidiú linn le suim sa Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn i gceantair i mBéal Feirste nach raibh sí le cluinstin le blianta fada. Ba chóir gur cúis bhróid í an Fhéile seo daoibhse uilig agus tá súil agam go mbainfidh sibh tairbhe as a bheith bainte leis An Droichead amach anseo. Go maire sibh an céad.

the most maddeningly nourishing, elevating, and mesmerizing Irish traditional music you’ll hear today. Earle Hitchner. Irish Echo

Swerving from infectious slides to slow airs, sean-nós songs to wild, passionate polkas, Begley and Ó Raghallaigh unleash the raw power and beauty of their Kerry music. Don’t miss the opportunity to hear these stellar musicians at close range. Formed in 2007, Begley and Ó Raghallaigh have toured Ireland, New Zealand and the USA. Button accordion player Brendan Begley is best known as a member of Boys of the Lough, while fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh’s “Kitty Lie Over” CD (with piper Mick O’Brien) topped Earle Hitchner’s 2003 Best Album list. Together, they have a wild, dynamic and fresh sound. Begley’s music could not exist were it not for the mountains, seas and storms of his native Dingle Peninsula. He has three acclaimed solo albums to his name, as well as numerous recordings with

the groups Boys of the Lough and Beginish. He is featured on two albums by the Chieftains (The Long Black Veil and The Bells of Dublin). Born in 1979, Caoimhín grew up listening to old vinyls of The Chieftains, Planxty and The Bothy Band. The Irish Times described as “a niftier mood enhancer than any drug therapy” by Siobhán Long of The Irish Times “Kitty lie over” has become one of the all-time best-loved traditional music albums. Caoimhín has been the subject of numerous television documentaries, including Faoi Lán Cheoil, where he had the Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons as his fiddle student over the space of a year.

ÉalúÉalú are a new dynamic quartet who play Irish traditional music with a twist. Their exciting repertoire marries Irish traditional music with new compositions, many self penned, based in the Irish and other Celtic music traditions. The band members play diverse instruments such as the uillean pipes, flute, concertina and bodhrán as well as the piano, drums and saxophone, which allow the production of the band’s distinctive and unique arrangements

This recently formed trio combines the unique vocal talents of Niamh Parsons (Arcady) Tíona Mc Sherry (Tamalin) and Mary Dillon Mary Dillon (Déanta) who will draw on a repertoire of traditional and contemporary folk songs, showcasing their individual voices as well as their exquisite harmonies.

Individually these four musicians will excite any person with a love of music but now that they are all performing together they will surely send Irish music into overdrive. Téann na turais siúlóide seo thart ar an Bhóthar Ormeau, Baile na Faiche agus ceantar an Lagáin, agus ligeann siad duit níos mó a fháil amach faoin taobh seo den bhaile. Beidh an turas seo ag díriú ar an stair agus ar na logainmneacha atá sáite sa teanga, rud a thabharfaidh deis ar leith chun dul i ngleic leis an oidhreacht roinnte seo againne. Beidh na turais seo ag plé le hainmneacha sráide, stair áitiúil agus cuid de chríoch-chomharthaí an bhóthair. I ndiaidh an méid sin siúlta a dhéanamh, beidh seans ann do scíth a ligean ag seisiún i mbeár an Hatfield House. – Turais dátheangacha a bheas iontu seo.

The names of our townlands, streets and neighbourhoods are perhaps the best way to show the relevance of Irish language in our lives today. These walking tours will take you around the Ormeau, Ballynafeigh and Lagan area and allow you to find out a little bit more about this side of town. Focusing on the history and place names which are steeped in the Irish language, the tours provide a unique opportunity to explore our shared heritage. The tours will explore street names, local history and some of the road’s land mark buildings. To relax after all that walking we’ll have a session in the Hatfield House bar.

Tháinig An Droichead agus CLG Naomh Maolmhoig le chéile leis an ócáid speisialta seo a eagrú don Fhéile. Cosúil leis an chomórtas traidisiúnta, beidh Poc fada dár gcuid féin againn ina mbeidh na hiomaitheoirí ag iarraidh an “poc” is faide a fháil. Tá an comórtas oscailte do dhaoine ar gach aon leibhéal agus aois, mar sin, má bhíonn tú go mór ag iarraidh baint nó díreach giota craice a bheith agat; bí linn. Beidh leibhéil difriúla ann mar sin fiú mura bhfuair tú greim ar chamán riamh roimhe, seo é do sheans triall a bhaint as.

We have teamed up with St Malachy’s CLG to organize this special event for the Féile. » Mise Éire

» Mise Éire

Scaoileadh ‘Mise Éire’, an chéad phríomhscannán Gaeilge riamh, scaoileadh é i 1960 agus cuireadh ar scáileán é den chéad uair i mBéal Feirste insa phictiúrlann mhór Curzon ar Bhóthar Ormeau. Amharcann sé siar ar an trí dhaichead d’athruithe polaitiúla in Éirinn roimh Éirí amach na Cásca. George Morrison a stiúir an scannán agus bhí rath mór air nuair a céad tháinig sé amach.

Released in 1960 and screened for the first time in Belfast in the iconic Curzon cinema on the Ormeau Road, Mise Éire was the first ever Irish feature film. Exploring the three decades of political change in Ireland leading up to the Easter Rising the film was directed by George Morrison and was a major success at the box office at the time.

» Poitín

» Poitín

Píosa de stair scannánaíochta na hÉireann é ‘Poitín’, a bhí ina chéad scannán ariamh le bheith déanta as Gaeilge ar fad. Feiceann muid Cyril Cusack ann mar dhéantóir poitín faoin tuath i gConamara sa scannán seo a bhí scríofa agus stiúrtha ag Bob Quinn. Ghin an scannán conspóid mhór nuair a céad craoladh é ar RTÉ ar Lá Fhéile Pádraig 1979.

A piece of Irish film history, Poitín was the first feature film to be made entirely in Irish. Written and directed by Bob Quinn the film stars Cyril Cusack as a moonshiner in rural Connemara. On its first public airing on RTÉ on Saint Patrick’s Day 1979, Poitín created a huge controversy.

Tá idir an chéad cheirnín agus an ceirnín vinile deireanach ann chomh maith le teidil íocónacha eile atá i gcnuasach acu. – Tá an taispeántas seo oscailte don phobal le linn na Féile.

Traditional music plays a central role in An Droichead’s work so we thought we’d give you the opportunity to get involved for free. This year’s music workshops and master classes are, without doubt, the best yet. We’ll have a bazouki master class with the man himself Dónal Lunny and a concertina master class with the virtuoso Pádraig Rynne of guidewires. There’ll be a very special workshop which will explore our shared heritage of Scottish and Irish music with a combined flute/fife and drum/bodhrán workshop.

Mar is eol do chách tá an ceol traidisiúnta lárnach i saol An Droichead, mar sin, shíl muid go dtabharfadh muid seans daoibhse a bheith páirteach. Níl aon amhras ann ach go bhfuil na ceardlanna ceoil seo ar na cinn is fearr a bhí riamh againn. Beidh máistirrang againn ar an bhasúcaí leis an fhear é féin Dónal Lunny agus máistir-rang ar an chonsairtín leis an virtuoso Pádraig Rynne ó Guidewires. Beidh ceardlann thar a bheith speisialta ann ina mbeidh plé ann ar an oidhreacht roinnte cheoil Albanach / Éireannach trí cheardlann ar an fheadóg mhór/fíf agus druma/bodhrán.

The master classes are suitable for those with a good level of competency in the instrument who want some guidance from these exceptional musicians. The workshop are open to learners or to anyone is interested in finding out more about a new instrument. If you’re in doubt though, give us a call at the office and we’ll have a chat.

Tá na máistir-ranganna fóirsteanach dóibh siúd a bhfuil leibhéal maith ábaltachta acu cheana san uirlis agus atá ag iarraidh rud beag treoraithe ó na sárcheoltóirí seo. Tá an cheardlann oscailte d’fhoghlaimeoirí nó do dhuine ar bith a bhfuil suim acu fáil amach faoi uirlis úr. Má bhíonn aon amhras ort áfach, cuir glaoch ar an oifig le haghaidh comhrá beag linn. • Máistir-rang 1 i.n. • Áit: An Droichead
