Page 1

As well as the full programme of events being delivered in Derry/Londonderry, the programme also incorporates outreach events in the Strule Arts Centre in Omagh, the Alley Arts Centre in Strabane and the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny. This event is aimed at raising awareness around issues such as racism, discrimination and harassment - including racist bullying. It seeks to educate children, young people, and the wider public, to accept, value, and embrace diversity in all its forms - whether race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, the poor, migrants, minorities, those with physical disabilities - as well as encouraging awareness of local and global issues like war, human rights abuses, and the environment. The long-term objectives and outcomes of the Intercultural & Anti-Racism Programme are to promote tolerance and inclusion. The programme showcases feature films, short films and documentaries from around the world in an effort to bring different landscapes, languages, beliefs, and cultures into the classroom. The objectives of this diverse programme of educational events are to broaden childrenšs and young people’s cultural awareness, literacy skills and cine-literacy abilities. The Nerve Centre’s annual Intercultural & Anti-Racism Festival, now in its eighth consecutive year, offers primary, postprimary schools, colleges, universities, community groups, and the general public, a programme of international films, documentaries, presentations, workshops, and outreach screenings, exploring the themes and issues involved. The programme launches on March 21, the official UN International Day Against Racial Discrimination, a date chosen to mark the anniversary of the Sharpeville Massacre in South Africa in 1960.

Driss, a Senegalese man living in a Paris slum, applies for a job as caretaker to a wealthy quadriplegic, but all he wants is to get his paper stamped so he can get benefits. Despite his lack of qualifications, he lands the job. Philippe, the quadriplegic, wants a caretaker who will look at him without pity. As Driss reluctantly learns to move, feed, and clean Philippe, the two men discover a blunt but vital humour that not only bridges the cultural and class divide between them, but gives Philippe a renewed joy in life. Based on a true story, the film demonstrates how a friendship can develop between the two most unlikely people - one a middle-aged, white, millionaire quadriplegic and the other a penniless, young, black, immigrant gangster. BULLY

documentary FILM

Blu-ray Screening

SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGE 3 (YR 9&10), KEY STAGE 4, & SIXTH FORM SUBJECT LINKS: CITIZENSHIP/EMU/EDUCATION FOR LIFE & WORK

‘Bully’ is an incredibly powerful documentary film dealing with a very difficult subject. The audience is intimately woven into the lives of a small group of young people impacted by bullying. In the most compelling scene of the film a little boy is asked how it makes him feel when the other kids call him names. The eight-yearold pauses, thinks about the question, looks into the camera and says: “It breaks my heart.” The overwhelming purpose of this film is to humanise the issue and to make it personal for all who see the film. Mission accomplished. An absolutely vital film for all young people, their parents and teachers, to see. “Occasionally, there are good films that make a difference in the world. BULLY is such a film.” Richard Propes, The Independent Critic “A sincere documentary…Parents and schools should place great emphasis on the idea that it is all right to be different. Racism and all the other “isms” grow from primitive tribalism, the instinctive hostility against those of another tribe, race, religion, nationality, class or whatever. You are a lucky child if your parents taught you to accept diversity. Teaching prejudice to a child is itself a form of bullying. You’ve got to be taught to hate.” Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times USA.2011. Director: Lee Hirsch. Cast: Alex, Ja’Maya, Kelby. Duration: 1hr.38mins. Cert: PG-13

SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN

DOCUMENTARY FILM Venue: Nerve Centre Cinema 1 In 1968, two producers discovered singer/ songwriter Rodriguez. They immediately thought they had found a musical folk hero in the purest sense, a Chicano Bob Dylan, and believed the album they all produced (Cold Fact) was the masterpiece of their careers. Despite good reviews, the album was a commercial disaster, and Rodriguez sank back into obscurity. This fascinating documentary follows two South African fans who set out to find out what really happened to their hero. Won the Oscar® for Best Documentary at this year’s Academy Awards. “A stunning, incredible documentary…had audiences leaping to their feet.” Michael Moore Sweden/UK.2012. Director: Malik Bendjelloul. On a psychologist’s advice, and with the blessing of his parish priest, Mark engages sex therapist Cheryl to lead him through the losing of his virginity in six sessions. Like Steve McQueen’s Shame, it is strange to see a male body so vulnerable onscreen. Yet a complete reversal of Shame in that Mark’s emotional life improves because of sex. It doesn’t make him hollow but even more introspective about what really matters to him and others. Winner of the Audience Award and Special Jury Prize at last year’s Sundance Film Festival. Nominated for an Oscar® and a BAFTA. “John Hawkes in a performance that recalls Daniel Day-Lewis’ Oscar-winning role in My Left Foot.” John Horn, Los Angeles Times USA.2012. Director: Ben Lewin. THIS IS NOT A FILM In film nist Renowned Iranian director, Jafar Panahi (Offside, The Circle, The White Balloon) received a 6 year prison sentence and a 20 year ban from filmmaking, and talking to the foreign media, due to his open support of the opposition party in Iran’s 2009 election. This clandestine documentary was shot partially on an iPhone and a modest DV camera by Panahi’s friend Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, and smuggled out of Iran on a USB stick and hidden in a cake for a last-minute submission to Cannes. Panahi shares his day-to-day life (talking to his family and lawyer on the phone, and reflecting on the art of filmmaking) as he waits for a decision on his appeal. Since his detention in 2009, Panahi’s cause has won international support from the film community. “Turns censorship into art.” Indiewire “The triumph of This Is Not A Film is not only an artistic one - the very existence of the movie is a gift. No wonder it came to us in a cake.” Slate “Ignore the title This Is Not a Film - this is a great film, and a triumph of creativity and courage over repression.” Entertainment Weekly Iran.2011. Director(s): Mojtaba Mirtahmasb & Jafar Panahi. Cast: Jafar Panahi. Duration: 1hr.15mins. Cert: U. Language: Persian with English subtitles.
