Tour of Heaney Country Leaves The John Hewitt Wednesday 2 January, 12 noon (5 hours)
★ Out to Lunch goes West! Enjoy a guided tour of ‘Heaney Country’ in Co. Derry and find out more about the people and places that inspired the area’s most famous son, poet and Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney. The tour’s first stop is Laurel Villa in Magherafelt, an awardwinning guesthouse with a unique Seamus Heaney exhibition. The tour then takes you through the villages of Castledawson, Toome and Bellaghy. Along the way discover townlands like Anahorish, retrace the writer’s footsteps along Lagan’s Road as a schoolboy and pass the blacksmith’s shop at the Hillhead, the inspiration for the poem The Forge. Finally, visit The Turfman statue, a life size representation of his most famous poem, Digging.

Maria Doyle Kennedy The Black Box Wednesday 2 January, 8.00pm
★ Not for nothing has Hot Press described Maria Doyle Kennedy as “the finest voice this country has ever produced.” Sometimes melancholy, other times joyful, always passionate – shot through with a potent soulful impulse. Her new 10-song collection Sing was co-written with husband Kieran Kennedy, and features duets with Damien Rice, Paul Brady and, on the jawdroppingly beautiful Yes We Will, the legendary John Prine. Her most accomplished and accessible work yet, Sing is a celebration of “the power of the voice, the sound a group of people can make when lifting their voices together – the human act of singing”. Touring Sing as much as her and Kieran’s four children will allow, Maria is also contributing to the Uncommon Folk project re-imagining the songs that made America. Again, Doyle Kennedy’s burgeoning status finds her rubbing shoulders with luminaries like Glen Campbell, The Blind Boys of Alabama and Mavis Staples. She belongs in such exalted company.

★ Reared in a musical home environment in Gulladuff, Co. Derry, Niamh’s vocal talent was evident from an early age. Moving with ease from mandolin, to tin whistle to guitar, Niamh has played in sessions, fleadhs and feiseanna all over the country. Recently Niamh’s distinctive talent caught the ear of Gerry Anderson who has featured Niamh’s debut CD Rainbow Days regularly in recent months. Audience feedback from the show has been phenomenal. ★ Based on a true story, The Trade Secret is about the first Elizabethans to discover petroleum and coffee in Persia. The heart of the novel is the friendship between servant Nat Bramble and Darius Nouredini, a poet in a wrestler’s body. Together they set off in search of a secret oil well believed to lie under an abandoned Temple of Mithra. But their oil venture lights a trail of fire which will follow Nat all the way back to the Pool of London, where he becomes caught in the crossfire as King James and the City of London’s richest corporation the Levant Company fight for power. The Trade Secret is Robert’s fourth novel. His writing has appeared in the Guardian and in the newsletter of Brazil’s Movement of the Landless (MST). Previous work in the last few years includes Robert Newman’s History Of Oil (DVD) and the BBC4 series History of the World Backwards.

Their 90-minute set will cover a selection of tracks dub-mixed live on analogue reel-to-reel, from Prince Fatty’s vaults and Hollie Cook’s incredible debut album. Hollie Cook was born and bred in West London in a household dominated by music. She gravitated to the sounds of Marc Bolan, David Bowie and The Cure. Keep it Cash The Black Box Sunday 13 January, 3.00pm
★ Taking you through from the humble gospel beginnings of the Tennessee two, right to the emotional and final American Recordings, this is the Johnny Cash celebration. Keep It Cash fully capture the energy and spirit of the music, in a professionally arranged multi-instrumental stage show with lighting and narrative. During the show you will hear the echoes of blues, black gospel and the spiritual music, that influenced Johnny Cash as a musician and ultimately immortalized him as a cult figure. The band is a genuine labour of love. Seeing them live, you will witness a lifetime of listening, practice and dedication. Keep It Cash formed in 2001, starting performing for fun, in small pubs and back rooms. Scroobius Pip The Black Box Sunday 13 January, 8.00pm
★ At Latitude 2012, Scroobius Pip headlined the spoken word tent on a Saturday night to a crowd of, to his surprise, over 4000 festival goers. All of whom stood in silence during each piece and engaged like a good drunk festival crowd should in between. Following the show Pip decided to embark on a special spoken word tour. Having toured the globe with Dan Le Sac for throbbing electronic accompaniment for the last five years it became clear that it was time to return to his roots for this one off run. Pip is not touring a watered-down version of his live shows. He is touring a completely different beast. A full and engaging 60 minute live show with the intent of taking you on a journey through more than just chin-stroking nods. This tour will coincide with the release of the No Commercial Breaks – Special Edition. A much demanded and finally delivered re-release of Pip’s debut record, of which he only made 1000 copies which all sold out many years ago.

★ Arlo Guthrie has long honoured his father, both in song and in life. In this year long celebration of Woody’s 100th birthday, Arlo is highlighting Woody Guthrie’s immeasurable contributions to the landscape of American folk music. Since childhood, Arlo was amazed by the creative genius of his father and the friends that would drop by: Leadbelly, Brownee McGee, and Cisco Houston to name a few. Not surprisingly, Arlo in turn became a delineative figure for a new generation. ★ Tom Paulin was born in Leeds in 1949 but grew up in Belfast, and was educated at the universities of Hull and Oxford. He has published ten collections of poetry as well as a Selected Poems 1972-1990, major anthologies, versions of Greek drama, and several critical works. His most recent collection of poems Love’s Bonfire (2012) sets poems about early life and marriage alongside minutely registered perceptions of post-settlement Ireland, scanning the look of things - bypasses and bridges, breezeblocks, bothies and bungalows, sheds and warehouses. At the book’s core are delicately inward translations of Paulin’s contemporary, the Palestinian poet Walid Khazendar: versions which resonate with the soundless proximity of other lives, other exiles and destinies, as of an autobiography by other means.

★ Valtari (2.00pm) Upon the release of their album Valtari, Sigur Rós asked 12 filmmakers to create whatever comes into their head when they listen to songs from the album. The idea was to bypass the usual artistic approval process and allow people utmost creative freedom. Filmmakers included Clare Langan, Melika Bass, and John Cameron Mitchell. The results are breathtaking. Inni (4.00pm) Inni is a follow up to Sigur Rós’ 2007 tour documentary Heima. Where Heima was lush and colorfully expansive, Inni is spare and near-monochromatic in its tunnel vision. Filmed in a manner that invites both intimacy and claustrophobia, Inni eschews audience shots for closeness, depicting how it feels for both band and fan to experience Sigur Rós live.
