Culture.pl in China 2015 The year 2015 turned out to be very special for us in China. After 6 years of networking, programming and slowly building our presence in the country, it was the perfect moment to show what we had been up to all that time and produce a Polish cultural season like no other ever before in Asia. And we did just that, organising 14 main projects with a total of over 50 separate events that brought together over 250,000 people. Why was it so special? Surprising as it may sound, the programme was not planned out as part of official Polish-Chinese cultural exchange at the ministerial or governmental level. It took shape gradually, as a natural consequence of all we had been working on with our Chinese partners since 2009. Because of this, all of the events in the series were organised on a bilateral partnership basis, through joint efforts with Chinese venues, festivals and programmers on one side, and Culture.pl with the solid backing of the Polish Institute – Culture Service of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Beijing on the other. We did not need to rent any venues; the programme came about because all sides involved were simply interested in showing the projects to Chinese audiences. The whole narrative was built around two exhibitions of Polish art in Beijing: historical art at the National Museum of China from February to May (“Treasures from Chopin's Country”) and modern art at the National Art Museum of China (“State of Life”) from May to June. During the first 5 months we also presented a Polish film focus at the Beijing International Film Festival (April), a new theatre production by Krystian Lupa titled “Woodcutters” in Tianjin and Beijing (Polski Theatre in Wrocław, May), and lots of music. Beata Bilińska gave piano recitals in February, Arte dei Suonatori and Octava gave concerts of early music in April, while in May, Sinfonia Varsovia had their first concert tour in China, and our great pop star Justyna Steczkowska performed in Beijing. The second half of the year was no less interesting. Michał Zadara presented his stage adaptation of Adam Mickiewicz’s classic “Forefathers’ Eve” at the Beijing People’s Art Theatre Festival in July/August (Polski Theatre in Wrocław) and Song of the Goat Theatre showed “Portraits of the Cherry Orchard” at the Wuzhen Theatre Festival in October. In the very same month the jazz bands Pink Freud and Jazzpospolita gave a total of 11 concerts in 8 Chinese cities (including appearances at the Beijing Nine Gates Festival and Shenzhen Oct-Loft Festival), and the Central Academy of Drama hosted a photo exhibition by Tadeusz Rolke (Le Guern Gallery) and academic seminars to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great Polish theatre director and artist Tadeusz Kantor. A Forbidden City Chamber Orchestra concert presenting 6 new works by contemporary Polish composers at the Beijing Concert Hall made for an unforgettable wrap-up to the season. The programme naturally concentrated on Beijing but there were also many events held in Tianjin, Wuhan and other cities, giving a total of 11 locations all around the country. Not only did we get full houses for the events, but also a whole stack of good press reviews and a growing following of culture lovers in China. And we are not stopping there. Culture.pl will continue to operate in China in tandem with the Polish Institute in Beijing, presenting to Chinese audiences the best we have, so that the words “Polish” and “culture” become naturally inseparable.

“Treasures from Chopin's Country: Polish Art from the 15th to 20th Century” Beijing, National Museum of China February 6 – May 10 The first Polish exhibition of this rank and scope not only in China but in the whole of Asia, organised in the prestigious museum on Tian’anmen Square in the heart of Beijing. “Treasures from Chopin's Country” brought together nearly 360 objects from 17 leading museums and art institutions in Poland. Most came from the National Museum in Warsaw, the main organiser of the exhibition, as well as from the National Museums in Krakow and Poznan. The presentation, taking up 1800 m² of exhibition space in two first-floor halls, offered a rare opportunity to experience the beauty of Polish art and learn about the country’s turbulent history. The presentation was divided into six main chronological sections, ranging from medieval religious wood sculpture of the 14th and 15th centuries, and art of the Polish Kingdom during its heyday in the 17th century, through 19th century oil painting, to modern art of the inter-war and post-war periods. Many masterpieces from permanent galleries in the national museums of Poland were included in the exhibition. Its success was confirmed not only by its popularity (109,000 visitors) and positive feedback in the press and social media but also by the fact that it was later loaned by the National Museum of Korea and exhibited in Seoul for the next three months under the title “Polish Art: An Enduring Spirit”. The exhibition was accompanied by a hefty catalogue, providing a solid source of academic knowledge for all those interested in learning more about Polish art.

“Focus on Polska” at the Beijing International Film Festival Beijing April 16 – 23 BJIFF is a fast-growing festival aspiring to becoming Asia’s leading film event. For the first time, Poland hosted a showcase at the festival, and it turned out to be the biggest national focus of the 2015 edition of BJIFF. It brought together 11 feature films, divided into two parts: a selection of eight all-time classics, and three new films: “Ida” by Paweł Pawlikowski (shown in the international section of BJIFF), “Warsaw 1944” by Jan Komasa, and “The Heart and the Sweetheart” by Jan Jakub Kolski. The eight all-time greats were presented in digitally restored versions as part of the “Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema” series. They were selected by BJIFF from about 30 features handpicked by Mr. Scorsese himself as a tribute to the masters of the “Polish school” that influenced generations of international moviemakers. The project at BJIFF was further enriched by meetings with Jan Komasa and Krzysztof Zanussi, who also gave an additional lecture on Polish film at the Beijing Film Academy. Last but not least, through efforts of the Polish Institute, a Chinese edition of our hit book Polish Cinema Now! ( John Libbey Publishing, London, 2010) was published by Star Publishing Press to accompany the presentation at BJIFF, quickly becoming one of China’s most popular reads and making many top ten book lists of the country.

Early Music Season Arte dei Suonatori:Wuhan, Qintai Concert Hall, April 9 Beijing, Forbidden City Concert Hall, April 12 Octava: Wuhan, Qintai Concert Hall, April 17 Beijing, Forbidden City Concert Hall, April 19 The Early Music Season is a concert series jointly presented by the Forbidden City Concert Hall and the Wuhan Qintai Concert Hall, each year showing three different ensembles from Europe. In the previous editions, the series featured exclusively French artists. This year, two renowned Polish ensembles were invited to take part in the programme: the Arte dei Suonatori chamber orchestra and the vocal octet Octava. The first ensemble presented an all-Bach programme performed on period instruments, letting the audience experience Bach’s music as it would have been performed in his own time. The programme focused on several of Bach’s Polish music inspirations, as well as compositions connected with his work at the Royal Court of Poland. Octava, on the other hand, presented some nearly-forgotten Polish religious songs of the Baroque period, which at the time had been very popular all across Europe. The octet was accompanied by Andrzej Zawisza on harpsichord. All of the concerts were played to full houses, proving that early music has a solid following among Chinese music lovers open also to exploring new and lesser-known music traditions.
“The Early Music Season was the first chance for Chinese audiences to experience Polish musical tradition from the 17th century - a period of the country’s greatest power. I am convinced they will not only appreciate the Polish artists’ level of mastery, but also share their dedication and passion for their music. Qianlong.com

Krystian Lupa’s “Woodcutters” Tianjin, Tianjin Grand Theatre, May 2 – 3 Beijing, 21st Century Theatre, May 6 – 7 After the great success of “Persona. Marilyn” last year (praised by Mr. Lin Zhaohua as “the new yardstick for Chinese theatre”), Tianjin once again invited the famous Polish theatre director Krystian Lupa to China, this time with his newest production “Woodcutters”, based on the Thomas Bernhard novel of the same title. Having premiered in Poland in October 2014 at the Polski Theatre in Wrocław, “Woodcutters” was presented in Tianjin as part of the Cao Yu Theatre Festival, and in Beijing as part of the Lin Zhaohua Theatre Festival. The 4-hourlong show, entirely in Polish with Chinese surtitles, exhilarated the Chinese audience, creating an even greater stir in theatre and cultural circles than “Persona. Marilyn” did the year before. Lupa secured his position as one of the greatest living theatre legends, delivering talks and giving countless interviews. “Woodcutters” got more than 40 press reviews, not counting the thousands of social media comments and discussions. The incredible success of this rather static, intellectual and wordy theatre can be accredited to its unquestionable artistic value and to the blunt critique of social and political issues it carries. Lupa not only set out on a fascinating exploration of the subtleties of human relations but also provoked a very up-to-date discussion on the social role and functions of art, the relations of artists and politicians, and on the cultural policies of governments. Bernhard’s critique of 1980s Austria got a brand new life in modern China.

“State of Life. Polish Contemporary Art within the Global Circumstance” Beijing, National Art Museum of China May 11 – June 24 The curatorial concept for the exhibition, devised by Jarosław Lubiak of the Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, hinged on the idea of showing art in the context of the social changes which it accompanies and reflects. And so, most of the 60 works on display were somehow connected with the political changes, social reforms and developments sweeping Poland after 1989, or reflected the global and international nature of modern art. Many came from the last few years, showing the latest trends and the hottest names in Polish visual arts. There were, however, also single works by earlier masters of modern art in Poland, such as Krzysztof Wodiczko, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Tadeusz Kantor and Leon Tarasewicz, to name but a few. And yet these works functioned principally as a cognitive framework on which new works by young artist were superimposed. From the very outset, the exhibition took shape with Chinese audiences in mind, and yet it took us six years of work to bring it to the country. Presenting it at NAMoC ensured that it would find the interest of experts and amateurs alike, and we were not mistaken. Over 126,000 visited the exhibition. It opened one day after the closing of the “Treasures from Chopin's Country” exhibition at the National Museum of China, forming a steady series presenting the history of Polish art from the Middle Ages to the very present. Context being key, the exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue with a 7-chapter theoretical section explaining the traits and contexts of modern art in Poland.

Justyna Steczkowska at the Meet in Beijing Festival Beijing, Chaoyang Pop Music Festival/Meet in Beijing Festival, May 3 Beijing, Beihang University, May 5 Justyna Steczkowska, one of the biggest stars of the Polish pop scene, gave two concerts in Beijing at the Meet in Beijing Festival as part of her first Chinese tour. The festival, organised by the Chinese Ministry of Culture and functioning as an official platform for international cultural exchange, has already hosted several Polish artists in recent years, including Zakopower, Aga Zaryan, DagaDana and Cracovia Danza. Michał Zadara’s “Forefathers’ Eve” Beijing, Beijing People’s Art Theatre July 31 August 1 – 2 “Forefathers’ Eve” is a drama written in the 19th century by Poland’s greatest poet Adam Mickiewicz, inspired by ancient folk ceremonies performed on All Hallows’ Eve. Often called “the Polish national play”, it has been used by generations of Polish theatre directors to illustrate and comment on the issues of the day, and remains one of the most important texts in Polish literary history. Curiously, almost no director has ever staged it without abridgements on account of its length and difficulty. Michał Zadara, a young but already distinguished Polish theatre director, decided to break with this tradition and produce the drama as it was written nearly two centuries ago. This time in Beijing, Zadara presented parts 1, 2 and 4 of the original drama, with part 3 comprising a separate production that may be brought to China in the future. After their study visit to Poland the year before, the programmers of the Beijing People’s Art Theatre chose Zadara’s “Forefathers’ Eve” to be the opening production of the International Theatre Festival organised annually at their venue. This was the first time that a Polish drama was invited to this dramatic theatre, the oldest and most prestigious in Beijing. Coincidently, Zadara’s play was produced by the same theatre company as Krystian Lupa’s “Woodcutters”, meaning that the actors and crew of the Polski Theatre in Wrocław visited China twice this year, both times returning home in triumph.

“Portraits of the Cherry Orchard” by Song of the Goat Theatre Wuzhen, Wuzhen Theatre Festival October 21 – 24 “Portraits of The Cherry Orchard”, based on Anton Chekhov’s drama “The Cherry Orchard”, is a tale of the end of the world. The collapse means a loss of security, not only material but also spiritual, and the characters, awoken from lethargy, cannot cope with the inevitable. Song of the Goat Theatre from Wrocław is a multi-award winning company recognised as one of Europe’s most innovative training-based theatre companies. They seek to integrate movement, voice, song and text, creating performances with inherent musicality and connecting with the audience on a sensory level. The production was selected from dozens of Polish proposals by the festival’s artistic director, the famous theatre director Meng Jinghui, who has visited Poland several times and holds our dramatic tradition in high regard. Song of the Goat performed four times at the East Warehouse Theatre in the picturesque, historic city of Wuzhen, which for one week each October transforms into the theatre capital of China. A seemingly unending stream of productions, big and small, are played in 4 theatre venues and on the squares and streets of the old town of Wuzhen, with thousands of culture lovers and theatre experts coming from all over the country to take part in this great artistic feast. It was the first time that a Polish production was invited to this dynamically growing international festival.

“Jazz po polsku” in China Pink Freud: Guangzhou, Zhongshan, Shenzhen, Hong Kong Jazzpospolita: Beijing, Nanjing, Xiamen, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou October 9-18 Two Polish jazz bands, Pink Freud and Jazzpospolita, gave an extensive series of 11 concerts in Beijing, Guangzhou, and six other Chinese cities. The two biggest stops on the tour were the Oct-Loft Festival in Shenzhen and the Nine Gates Festival in Beijing. The remaining concerts were organised in leading clubs and concert halls by the Polish promoters of the two bands – Plateaux Foundation, which coordinates the “Jazz po polsku” series. Having already been successfully presented in numerous European countries, in 2014 “Jazz po polsku” brought Imagination Quartet to the Oct-Loft Festival, laying the groundwork for continued cooperation between the partners. After this year’s concerts, which again proved that Polish musicians are more than welcome in China, the 2016 edition of “Jazz po polsku” will see an even bigger line up of Polish bands take the stage at the OctLoft Festival and in venues all across the country. These plans fit perfectly with Culture.pl strategy for promoting Polish jazz and electronic music throughout Asia, where more and more musicians from our country are giving concerts and participating in leading festivals in recent years. The main destinations are currently Korea and Japan, but it seems that China is poised to take the lead.

“Tadeusz Rolke. Tadeusz Kantor” Exhibition Tadeusz Kantor Seminar Beijing, Central Academy of Drama October 14 – 15 2015 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Tadeusz Kantor (1915-1990), the great theatre director, visual artist, and art theorist. To celebrate this event, many Polish cultural institutions focused throughout the year on showcasing Kantor’s legacy and on building awareness about this exceptional persona in Poland and abroad through a number of different projects. Culture.pl worked with the most esteemed theatre education institution in China, the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, to build basic knowledge about Tadeusz Kantor among students and researchers of the academy. The project consisted of a photo exhibition and a Kantor seminar by Polish experts, along with film screenings. The “Tadeusz Rolke. Tadeusz Kantor” exhibition was the first presentation of a big group of works devoted entirely to Tadeusz Kantor by the world-famous Polish photographer Tadeusz Rolke (born 1929). The 56 works selected by the artist himself and the Warsaw Le Guern Gallery span more than 40 years of Rolke’s contact with the great theatre director, depicting him at various stages in his professional career. The exhibition created a vivid narrative showing Kantor as both a versatile artist and a man: his emotions, actions, and the atmosphere he created around himself and the works he brought to life. The exhibition was presented in the main building of the sprawling New Campus of the Central Academy of Drama, in the northern part of Beijing, where B.A. students of the academy attend classes. The aim of the project was to show not only the achievements of the great Polish theatre director but also works by the Polish master of photography. To complement the exhibition, Culture.pl and the Polish Institute in Beijing organised a one-day seminar on Tadeusz Kantor at the Old Campus of the Central Academy of Drama in the centre of old Beijing, where M.A. and Ph.D. students attend classes. Three distinguished speakers from Poland were invited to the seminar to talk about Kantor’s achievements in the field of theatre and about the great artist himself. Krzysztof Miklaszewski, an actor in Kantor’s theatre, a filmmaker and writer, also promoted the Chinese publication of his book “Encounters with Tadeusz Kantor”, just hitting Chinese bookstores. Dr. Lech Stangret, a distinguished Kantor researcher and a one-time actor under the director, gave an analysis of Kantor’s views on theatre and of select traits running through his art. Dr. Anna Burzyńska, a researcher from the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, discussed the modern assessment of Kantor legacy. The seminar was accompanied by screenings of films devoted to Kantor’s theatre.

Warsaw Autumn Night in Beijing – Special Concert Beijing, Beijing Concert Hall November 22 The special concert of the Forbidden City Chamber Orchestra marks the grand finale of a four-year project run by the FCCO, Culture.pl and the Warsaw Autumn Festival. Back in 2012, FCCO commissioned young Polish composer Wojciech Blecharz to write a modern work for traditional Chinese instruments. The task took 3 years and 3 visits to China to complete. Finally, Blecharz’s piece was successfully presented in 2014 by FCCO at the Warsaw Autumn Festival. In 2013, five other distinguished Polish composers were invited by the FCCO to write new works as part of the orchestra’s long-term cooperation commitment with Polish partners. With a similar pace of work and three visits to China, Tadeusz Wielecki, Lidia Zielińska, Jarosław Siwiński, Piotr Roemer and Paweł Hendrich completed their compositions mid-year in 2015, just in time for the concert in November. The concert brought all six composers and their six compositions together, performed for the very first time by the FCCO. This was the longest-running artistic project by Culture.pl in China, and one of the most ambitious. The FCCO commissioned very innovative and experimental works, which searched for new uses, functions and sounds in the traditional Chinese instruments played by the orchestra. In this way, tradition was given a new direction for development and a new place in the modern world, something that the FCCO’s visionary director and conductor, Liu Shun, is constantly searching for.
