Carnival, the adhesive of unity Another year of Notting Hill Carnival etched into the history books of Britain. 49 years after the first pan echoed on the streets of Notting Hill that drew West Indians out of their homes, unto the streets of Portobello Road as they followed the sound of a lone steelpan to give birth to a culture that travelled with the Diaspora. Carnival remains the only event that brings, and unites people from all walks of life, regardless of creed, colour, race, class, shape or size. Carnival is the adhesive that binds cultures and differences. On carnival day, we all move to the same rhythm and guided by the same vibes as we revel in pure bacchanalia taking charge of the streets and painting it with the colours of unity.

Notting Hill Carnival 2013 I want to take this opportunity to commend everyone worked diligently in making Notting Hill Carnival a success for yet another year. More importantly, I would like to especially extend commendation to the London Metropolitan Police for, their near impeccable policing of this year’s carnival. In recent I have been foremost in criticising them for their lack of understanding to an event gels every member of society on carnival day. There is still work to be done and a lot of listening by the Met police however, praises where it’s due. Well done Metropolitan police. You cannot please everybody but somehow the London Notting Hill Carnival Enterprise Trust during their Press Launch managed to showcase the theatrics of carnival. After the welcome speech by Pepe Francis OBE, guests and media personnel were treated to a display of carnival theatre. This display was somewhat poignant for 40 years ago Peter Minshall’s costumes entered into the realm of Notting Hill carnival. My one criticism to this is why isn’t the national press still not giving carnival the coverage it rightly deserves? Maybe for the 50th anniversary, there’s hope yet.

Carnival is Bacchanal By Onike Joseph
They say ‘Carnival is Bacchanal’ and for the all-new Smokey Joe Roadshow, that proved to be true! Notting Hill has the unique ability to provide Caribbean style mas alongside West London’s concoction of culture that makes the Notting Hill carnival experience truly amazing. We were blessed by the carnival god’s to have Tribe’s King Dragon, played by international carnivalist Kendall Sharpe on the road for Notting Hill 2013 causing the excitement of our carnival bubble to go crazy. Our masqueraders played our theme ‘Purple Haze’ designed by Mike Big of Legacy Trinidad. The climax of the day came when our band floated round the corner to the green on Brunel estate, famously known as ‘Trinidad Hill’ where the DJ unleashed Benjai’s ‘Real Trini’, sending masqueraders, Trini Hill and the crowd into a frenzied mode of revelry we call ‘wine’. The people seemed to have multiplied with everyone, red, white, black and other hues singing and dancing along as one happy family in an overwhelming show of love and unity, so yes! Carnival is Bacchanal and for the love of Mas, it is worth it!
Provoking the debate on carnival costumes By Darrin Des Vignes
What's the evolutionary step for Carnival costumes in Trinidad? The Trinidad styled festival is popping up in cities all over the world wherever there's a healthy diaspora. Will the Brazilian styled nokini costume go out of fashion eventually? What's the replacement for feathers and beads? What is it promoting or communicating to those outside of the notion? I tried to observe with fresh eyes at Notting Hill Carnival... Saw 90% of female flesh vertical and horizontal on the road, plenty dry humping, costumes that fit, did not fit, beautiful and offensive. Some looked hurried to make money; some looked exquisite and artfully expensive. I get the Trini-ness of the bacchanal that historically aligns itself to the event but just a little confused especially as it is an official export of Trinidad and Tobago.

De Carnaval over Well carnaval come and gone! Everybody was opening up dey mouth and saying dis and dat now silent, exhausted and tending to their aching feet. Yes oui! The ‘stage is we’ and we real perform too until another year come around again to play we self. Yes, next year we coming again with feathers, sequins, chocolate, powder, paint and ah hear say callaloo too – doh forget beads eh! We go colour the grey old London metropolis again, into a psychedelic mural. Buh wait, ah hear ah man say he ‘have ah dream’ to take Panorama back to Hyde Park and to make carnaval better. Ah wonder how many of us would support the man ‘dream’ or are we just satisfied to revel for two days on de ‘stage’ as an actor or extra and wait till next carnaval to jump and wave? To all the calypsonians, steel bands, mas bands, DJs, Sound Systems and every single participant who helped in making 2013 carnaval ah success, I say hats off to you. And aye! Come back next year nah, is 50 years yuh know.
