Dear Jazzahead participant, Welcome to ‘the Dutch face-book’ at Jazzahead! This small booklet provides all the information you need to get in touch with the Dutch at Jazzahead 2014. In short, a practical guide including a comprised introduction of jazz and world music in The Netherlands and a selection of leading venues and festivals. This year there are various Dutch groups at Jazzahead, performing at the European Jazzmeeting and the Škoda Clubnight. Check out the following concerts, all on April 26: KAPOK, 16:30 - 17:00 Borgward Saal, Estafest 18:30 - 19:00 Borgward Saal, Tin Men and the Telephone 20:00 - 20:30 Schlachthof and Bram Stadhouders’ Henosis 20:30 - 21:00 Halle 2. the Dutch face-book at Jazzahead

At the Dutch Umbrella (stand B11) you will find information and meet with Dutch delegates. At the service desk we will help you with any questions you might have. We like to point out two new grants presented by the Performing Arts Fund NL: international festivals and venues can apply for support for Dutch presentations abroad and for composition commissions. Please come to the Dutch Umbrella for inquiries about these grants and other supporting activities. Finally we also bring to your attention the support of and collaboration with the Netherlands Consulate General in Düsseldorf. With their help we have been able to promote the Dutch showcases at Jazzahead and to arrange an exclusive trade lunch for Dutch artists/agents and international presenters in Die Mühle in Bremen. On behalf of all Dutch participants and all supporting organizations we wish you a fruitful Jazzahead and we are looking forward to meet you at the Dutch Umbrella! Dutch Delta Sounds

Stan Rijven

Dutch Delta Sounds: jazz & world in the Netherlands The Netherlands are known for windmills and technodeejays, but what makes its music world spin? Besides hosting a world famous jazz festival (North Sea Jazz, Rotterdam), the largest Eurasian festival (Tong Tong, The Hague) and the hottest electronic dance event (ADE, Amsterdam) on the globe, The Netherlands offer a delta full of crossovers. Crossovers are indeed the trademark for both jazz and world. Two musical scenes that foster each other but also inject innovative impulses into classical and pop. Like the A- and B-side of a vinyl disc, Dutch jazz and world were already close from the early days, both strongly influenced by the former Dutch colonies of Indonesia, the Dutch Antilles and Suriname.

It was not until early 20th century that foreign musical influences began to take root in The Netherlands. Thanks to Arie Maasland, alias Malando, Argentinian tango became widely popular and his composition OlĂŠ Guapa (1937) a worldwide hit. Inspired by Astor Piazzolla the 1980s brought a tango-revival including the formation of many ensembles such as Carel Kraayenhof & Sexteto Canyengue. Today one can even study tango at Codarts, the Rotterdam Conservatory. Likewise American jazz was flourishing in the 1930s and got a local translation through trumpeter Theodoor Kantoor, alias Teddy Cotton, and sax player Arthur Parisius, alias Kid Dynamite. They both came from Suriname and thus paved the way for the wave of

Stan Rijven

Jazz & World in the Netherlands

Surinamese jazz and world ensembles of the 70s and 80s in The Netherlands. After World War II economical changes led to the massive influx of migrants. Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague transformed into vital centres of new musical hybrids. After Indonesian independence (1949) tens of thousands emigrated to their former ‘motherland’. They introduced the sweet kroncong and the much rougher indorock which laid the basis for the sixties nederbeat. Consequently The Hague became the ‘Liverpool of Holland’ but also the beating heart of Indonesian culture. Today its annual Tong Tong Fair is the world’s biggest Eurasian festival. By the way Paul Acket, founder of North Sea Jazz, was born in the Dutch Indies. Same goes for 60s impro-pioneer Nedly Elstak and boogiewoogie-pianist Rob Agerbeek. During the post-war reconstruction period guest labourers from the Mediterranean and beyond arrived in large numbers. Rotterdam turned into the musical capital of Cape Verde, home port to Morabeza Records that laid the groundwork for vocalists such as Bonga and Césaria Evora. In Amsterdam the musical heritage of Portugal (Maria de Fatima, Fernando Lameirinhas), Morocco (Kasba, Jan Wouter Oostenrijk) and Turkey (Theo Loevendie) yielded many different fruits. The 1970s saw political refugees arriving from Chile (Patricio Wang) and South Africa (Busi Mhlongo, Sean Bergin), a decade later from Ethiopia and Ghana. After the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989) musicians from Eastern Europe (like the accordion virtuosi Vasile Nedea and Nihad Hrustanbegovic) revitalized the Dutch music delta.

Especially the Netherlands are breeding ground for innovative Latin-European crossovers. After Suriname’s independence (1975) and the shutting down of Shell’s oil refinery on Curaçao (1985), another wave of migration from its former colonies took place. Surinamese and Dutch Antillean artists enriched the Dutch salsa and jazz scene or developed their own style. Bands like Surinam Music Ensemble and Fra Fra Sound explored the connections between Surinamese kaseko, American jazz and African grooves while Paramaribo-born flute player Ronald Snijders commuted between jazz, funk and world. Dutch Antillean musicians were often engaged in the salsa, jazz and soul scenes. Bass player Eric Calmes started his own group Zaminokitaki, which was a fertile basis for others to explore the variety of Antillean styles such as the tumba. Singer Izaline Calister, pianist Randal Corsen and Eric Calmes fused their tradition with elements of jazz, pop and world. The orchestras led by saxophonists Rosa King and Hans Dulfer were breeding grounds for such musicians as steelpan master Mr. Slim, drummer Eddy Veldman and guitarist Franky Douglas. In the 1980s the bands run by singer Edsel Juliet and keyboardist Jan Laurens Hartong took over this talent-scout role in their respective groups of Latin Touch and Nueva Manteca. It was mainly outside the Netherlands that they received response for their own musical developments of Salsa Corriente and Cubop. Nueva Manteca turned out to be a stepping stone for such top percussionists as Nils Fischer, Geraldo Rosales and Lucas van Merwijk, who in 1995 formed his own Cubop City Big Band.

Stan Rijven

Jazz & World in the Netherlands

The past decade new fusions have risen from this broad musical delta when pop, classical and jazz musicians began collaborating with their new neighbours. NO Blues fused Arabic folk and American blues into ‘arabicana’, punkers The Ex invited Ethiopian sax legend Gétatchèw Mèkurya. Turkish and Dutch improvisation lead to previously unheardof experiments in Arifa. New Cool Collective worked with afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen, Amsterdam Klezmer Band combines klezmer with jazz and ska. Viola player Oene van Geel ventures in chamber music, Indian and impro with several ensembles a/o Estafest, Zapp4 and the Nordanians. The contemporary classical orchestra Nederlands Blazers Ensemble creates crossovers with Dutch world musicians from elsewhere like cimbalomplayer Vasile Nedea (Ro) and singers like Karsu (Tr) and Minyeshu (Eth). Today these developments take root both in musiceducation as on stage. The Rotterdam conservatory Codarts recently abolished the separation between the curriculums of pop, jazz and world. The established jazz-venues Bimhuis in Amsterdam and LantarenVenster in Rotterdam both program jazz and world equally. All these innovations add up to a new genre: Dutch Delta Sounds. ©2014, Stan Rijven

About Sounds Like Cutting edge music, exciting, hilarious and breathtaking. Anyone who has seen the group was surprised, moved, nurtured and inspired.

Four high profile improvisers of the Dutch jazz and improv scene have teamed up and formed ESTAFEST. In this unusual line-up, they combine their distinctive instrumental skills and sound, wrapped up in brilliant short pieces. They create an atmosphere in which both the audience and the musicians go with the flow of the moment.

OGU, led by pianist Jeroen van Vliet, improvises with sounds and textures, presenting evocative, adventurous music. Guitarist Bram Stadhouders (also showcasing at Jazzahead 2014) produces an extraordinary spacious sound. Etienne can actually stop the time… Pianist Jeroen van Vliet also performs solo and it turns out that both programs – OGU and Jeroen solo – match perfectly.
