I made a habit of greeting everyone I encountered by name, or with a chubby smile when I felt a name would be too startling.…Knowing that would-be strangers are now my closest friends has made it impossible for me to discredit anyone’s life or experience, causing me to more finely tune my innate sense of fairness.…The realization that every person has something
special to share leads to the conclusion that everyone must be protected and valued, principles of social justice I will take with me well beyond Culver.”
