Be the Difference That Makes A Difference By T. Mayfield
Be the difference that makes the difference Is a phrase that had an impact on me For it strikes a chord that resonates in life About how we see things and how we proceed It speaks about getting involved About engaging and into the fray About helping and lending a hand As others explore and learn the way What you say as well as what you do Does make a difference you know It might be a profound statement or action Or something as simple as a warm hello Do not pass this chance, this opportunity Because of indifference or lack of interest Rather make the move that may change a life And be the one that makes the difference At Culver this summer It is your chance, maybe even today To Be the Difference that makes the Difference By what you do and what you say

What Makes a Good Cadet By Lilith Kocian And another summer kicks off in Culver, Indiana! Sdents, faculty, and staff come from all corners of the globe to take residence in the cornfields of Indiana for a few weeks. All of us have different reasons for coming but we all have one thing in mind: making the most out of our summer.
Whatever your reason for coming to camp I urge you to make the most of your time here. This place is so much more than unairconditioned brick buildings and fields made for marching. On this campus you have the chance to learn, grow, and lead in ways not possible anywhere else and it is ok to make mistakes. The great thing about Culver is that it allows you to learn from these shortcomings with The real question is, what do we actually want to make of little reprecussions. our summer? Some of us want to have the most successful units and decks, some want to get an important position or rank, others just want to meet new people and make lasting friendships.

The Mud Run Mark Valadez, Regimental Commander at Culver’s Upper Camp, helped with the Mud Run that took place June 21, 2017. Valadez attended Woodcraft camp for 2 years, and is now a seasoned member of the Upper Camp. The Mud Run is an Upper Camp tradition in which new campers, or new cadets, have to go through a challenging obstacle course in teams. The course starts about a mile off campus, and is designed to build teamwork. The groups of new campers build this teamwork by working together to complete challenging tasks. The

idea is that the new cadets will get to know each other, and figure out each other’s strengths and weaknesses. According to Valadez, “Working as a team through the obstacle course helps bring out the natural leadership in each new cadet, and gets them into the mindset of being in a team and knowing when to take charge or when to hang back.” The obstacles are run by the regimental staff, and the regimental commander goes through the course to help the new cadets. The leaders keep track of the team’s progress, and make sure the teams are able to complete each obstacle.
Mark Valadez says this year he was able to experience a new perspective on the mud run as Regimental commander. He said, “It was inspiring to see the change in the cadets from the beginning of the obstacle course, where everyone is in discord and talking over one another, to seeing the cadets at the end after they have figured out how to work as a team and complete the obstacles efficiently.” Valadez explains that he has been working towards being regimental commander since starting at culver as a Woodcrafter. He said he has always looked up to those in leadership positions, and was inspired by many of Culvers leaders. His advice to those looking at leadership positions is, “stick to being yourself, don’t try to be somebody you’re not. Make sure to start working on yourself… build yourself strong so you can support others.”
