GaGa Ball takes Woodcraft by storm
Issue 1 July 4, 2016
Vedette History By Elizabeth Erwin
I wanted to look in on the history of Woodcraft and The Vedette because I wanted to give Bronze C’s more information. Woodcraft was founded in 1912 by Danial Carter Beard. He was also director for a few years. The Vedette was started in the early 20th century Do you like the Vedette? I asked Major Tricky. He said yes and wants The Vedette more often. GUESS WHAT?! Major Tricky started reading the Vedette in 1976 when he was 18 years old. WOW!! Early in the 19th century, in 1894, Henry Harrison Culver began Winter School.

Spooky Stories by Aaron Lowery: Club Foot What would be a camp without scary stories? Every camp has its fair share of them. So, I made it my job to find the creepiest stories at Culver, let’s get started! Club Foot was an average kid, got average grades, had average friends, played GaGa Ball, and ate snacks. But every night he took a golf club and rubbed it on the back on the D2 cabin wall to scare all the campers inside. He would also make other noises like rustling on the bushes and creaking the floor boards. One day Club Foot died in a lightning storm and it’s said ever since he died he’s haunted D2. The thing is, when D2 moved out no one knows what happened to Club Foot. Some say he haunts the empty walls of D2 to this day. Others say he roams the gravel roads at night in a phantom golf cart and looks for the kids who were in D2. Phantom golf cart or not I think we can all agree we don’t want Club Foot haunting our cabin. And so that concludes todays edition of SPOOKY STORIES !

Sign Language Sign language is one type of language that is not very common. Here in Culver, Major Arvelo wants to teach campers that language, I asked some campers if they like the idea of taking the class. Most of the campers say that is very good the idea to get that class and very useful for the future. Major Arvelo (The Girl’s Director) wanted a patch for the class. So a few years later she got the patch. Major Arvelo outside Culver is a very good person, she teaches sign language to kids that can’t hear. There is a story that one girl here in camp was one of the best but she can only communicate with this Jorge Piraquive language so that proves if someone has a problem with communication they can be fine at camp.
Beavers, Cardinals, Butterflies, & Cubs
Lucero Zuniga What is the history behind the Beavers, Cardinals, Butterflies, and Cubs? I wanted to find out more information about the animals for the boys and girls units. I went around campus and asked some people what they knew about the animals. Major Zimmerman told me that the Beavers were chosen by Dan Beard in 1912 when Culver first started. He also told me that the girls units, But-
terflies and Cardinals, where chosen by Janet Kline, who was the first girls director. Major Zimmerman did not know when the Cubs were added, but he did tell me that at first they were called the Wolf Cubs. Two years later they changed their name to just Cubs. I asked Col. Spahn how she felt about the animals that were chosen to represent the units. She told me that she liked how the girls’ animals are two that can fly and she also liked how the Beavers and Cubs are two land animals. If she could change the animals for the girls, they would probably still be two animals that can fly, but she is not sure which ones. And that is some history of the animals for the units in Woodcraft.

Homesickness Getting homesick is common. You miss your parents, friends from home, and electronics. I interviewed 2 people who I thought would really help dig up some information for me, Major Maes from Division 7, and Major Trickey from Division 5. According to Major Maes some common triggers are not being interactive with other campers, staying in their cabins therefore preventing them from going outside, and giving yourself too much free time to think about what you miss. Also, when you get a package from your parents or loved ones, after having fun you get sad because your memories start to flood you again and you remember how much you miss them. Although Major Trickey has a slightly different point of view. DON’T USE THE WORD HOMESICKNESS! Use the word uncomfortable. Homesick sounds like an illness, and no one here is sick. You’re just missing your family. Honestly anything can trigger uncomfortableness. A smell, place, person, or just about anything.
Is It Normal? Carlyn Jones preoccupied. This time he and Major Trickey have similar things in mind. Major Trickey says that uncomfortableness is normal. You have to be preoccupied to distract yourself from thinking about your parents, friends, and anything else you miss.
In a class there was a homesick/uncomfortable camper and they decided to talk to me about their feelings based on Culver. I told them when they were done talking to think of it as a game. They listened to my theory and agreed. In the end they ended up thanking me and said that they felt so much better now.
I told Major Maes and Major Trickey this idea and they loved it. Major Maes said it will make Culver seem fun. It will distract you from missing your parents, and making it a 6 week long game and you really want to win. It will make the game end so much faster. In other words the summer will be over before you know it. Major Trickey says yes it is a really good idea I get kids from all over the world. Major Maes says that you can’t get It’s a normal feeling and really its all a rid of homesickness. It’s just some- matter of how you decide to deal with thing that happens, when you’re not your problems and how you face it.
Your parents send you to Culver because they love you so much and they want you to come home a more mature and better person in general. Major Maes thinks that it really doesn’t matter how long you have been here to determine if you still get homesickness. He still gets homesick even though his parents live right down the road. And he has been here 6 years. Same with Major Trickey. He’s had kids from 3 to 6 years coming here and they still get uncomfortable. These are fears you just need to overcome. Major Maes says that he thinks boys get more homesick then girls. My sister Major Maes has told me about homesick girls in her unit and I think boys get more homesick then girls. But Major Trickey thinks they’re equal. One year it may be more girls then boys opposite the next year. Sometimes you have to talk to then to get them to understand. It can hurt. Your stomach hurts, your head hurts, but it’s something that you can overcome.

Get Shrek’t Miles Reeves
Since 1912 when the summer Woodcraft Camp was added to Culver’s list of academies and camps, the students and counselors have been putting on an amazing rendition of a musical every year. This year, the staff and students will be putting on a much looked forward to production of “Shrek the Musical” called “Shrek the Musical Jr.” I interviewed my sister Caelan Reeves (who will be playing the Wicked Witch), and what she really wanted to know was why Shrek out of all musicals was chosen, I’m here to tell you why. When I interviewed Col. Spahn she said that Shrek was chosen because she saw the Winter School do
a production of the musical and fell in love with it. She loved the costumes, the stage design, and all aspects of the musical; since Woodcraft could use all of these things again, the choice was made. Auditions took place on the first Sunday of camp where many people auditioned and many people got in, so congratulations to those who did! Woodcrafters are very excited to see this year’s “Woodcraft Camp Play” and so are we here at The Vedette. Once again, thank you to all who auditioned and good luck to those who made it. See you there!
Do You Like Marching? Olaya San Martin
Do you like marching or do you think it is tiring to march? Well, no matter what my article is about marching and, yeah it is tiring and boring, but look at the bright side: we look uniformed and disciplined. So I interviewed Col. Wettig and Cpt. Thomas and I asked them what is the most common place to march? They said that the most common place to march is to the Dining Hall because we have dinner and breakfast. So next time you think “Why do we have to march?” you can remember this article on why we march at Culver.

Recycling in Culver Leines Ibanez - Nicole Macari Luis Ayestaran
Many people ask: Why is it important to recycle? Well to find out you will be reading some answers of important people here in Culver. Recycling is very important to us, and not only us, the world. The contamination is invading our world and is becoming worst every single day, just like a world made out of trash. Something that could really help by recycling at Culver, and not only at Culver is to separate the trash into groups: organic, inorganic, plastic, cans, and papers. Some people in Culver said they don’t care about recycling, but others say yes. Those are the ones who really care about Culver. Just like Colonel Wettig. He said; I recycle because my wife does. We asked; why does your wife recycle? He said, “Because it can save our world and prevent natural disasters.” Recycling is not only an important topic, it’s an important action that we should do everywhere, not only at Culver. It prevents natural disasters and could save many animals and people we should take care of.

Why GaGa Larry Ronstadt
Fun Facts About GaGa Ball
Maj. Maes said “GaGa ball is a new to Culver and everyone loves it.” He also said he can’t leave the headquarters without seeing at least 5 people play this game. So he thinks it would be an amazing cabin game. For this to be put into order we would need a GaGa Pit in the same area baseball and soccer are. It can be a divisional game if they want, but we would need to put more pits around the cabins so more people can do it at once. Right now we only have 5. In the end, GaGa ball would be a great cabin game because it is so new to camp. People want to play it more than other sports and people say they should try something new in this camp. Well I bet no kid has played GaGa Ball at home.
Jackson Haffling
GaGa Ball is the reason we have to take a shower at night. If you don’t know what GaGa Ball is it’s a game where you try and hit the ball with one hand and aim at other people feet. I asked Major Maes how GaGa Ball started and he said that Colonel Spahns daughter plays it at her school so that gave Colonel Spahn the idea to add GaGa Ball. Colonel Spahn put GaGa Ball in this year. Here are some fun facts about Gaga Ball! GaGa Ball started in Israel and then spread to the US over the decades! Did you know that Ga in Hebrew means “hit” or “touch”? And did you know that according to the rules, if needed, a second ball can be thrown in the pit to expedite the end of the game? Commonly there will be a 20 second down when play is too slow and only 2 or three players remain! In my personal opinion, GaGa Ball is where kids can work together and have fun.

GaGa Ball Pit Pablo Perez
At the year of 2016 at Culver Woodcraft camp the staff add the GaGa Ball Pit, now is the most popular game at Culver, they put 5 GaGa Ball Pits, one on D6, one on D4 territory, one on Beavers side, one on Butterflies side and one on Cardinals side, the goal is to hit the ball with your hands and try to hit someone’s feet. I asked Col. Spahn about GaGa Ball Pit. I asked who put the GaGa Ball Pits and it was her idea because she was looking for ways that everyone can play and that campers don’t stay in their cabins all day so now on everyone goes and plays GaGa Ball.

Cub & Butterfly Mixer Nora Kamrow
Being a Major Amelia Walsh
Being the major of a unit is like being the care giver and mother to 50+ girls. I interviewed Major DeWald who is the major of C3. Major DeWald said, “It’s very exciting because I get to meet girls from all around the world who live a very unique life.” Majors have a very important role in a unit. They keep all of the campers safe, secure, and also help guide them. I asked Major DeWald, “Is it stressful being a major?” Her response was, “It is stressful to a degree because you’re in charge of over 50 girls and about 7 councilors.” The last question I asked Major DeWald was, “Would you rather be a cabin councilor or a major?” Her response was, “Definitely a major because I get to know a whole wing rather than just a small group.” In conclusion, being a major is a lot of hard work but it’s also a good chance to meet people from all around the world, see all of the different lifestyles, and know a whole wing rather than a cabin.
On July 11 one of the biggest events between cubs and butterflies will be held on the Retreat field. That’s right-the Cub and Butterfly Mixer! When I asked Cpt.Thomas why the cubs and butterflies get their own dance he said it is nice to have friends that you will have until Upper School and maybe even later. Col.Wettig says no one is sure what we are wearing to the dance yet. There will be music so people can dance or play gaga ball or do whatever. Some Cubbies are asking Butterflies out already! Anyway, if you ask someone out or not, make sure to have fun!
The Lip Sync Battle Stefani DeWall
This year, instead of having Ugly Counselor Day, where the campers make their counselor as ugly and dirty as possible, this year we had the Lip Sync Battle on the 21st of June 2016 from 6:30–8:00.
I asked Major DeWald what she thought about the battle and she thought “It was fun, successful, original, and a smart choice. A lot of people had a lot of fun, everybody enjoyed it, campers, counselors, majors and our great host Cpt. Thomas.” I asked Major DeWald if she knew why they decided to change the Ugly Counselor contest and she answered “It would be more appropriate”.
The people who got to participate were the Butterfly wings, Cardinal wings and the counselors and majors from those wings. The Lip Sync Battle was located in the amphitheater. I interviewed our host Cpt. Thomas and There were three categories of winMajor DeWald for some questions ners in the Lip Sync Battle. The first that I had about the battle. category was counselors, which the C1 counselors and a bonus of Captain Cpt. Thomas said, “The Lip Sync Bat- Reeves won. The second category was tle seemed fun and was cleaner than Butterflies, which the B1 whole unit the Ugly Counselor Contest since it won. And last but not least was the took three days to clean all the weird category of Cardinals, which Cabin stuff the campers put on the counsel- 6, Lt. Abaunza’s cabin, won from C2. ors. It went really well! I am looking Even the boys had fun dancing on the forward to doing it next year.” top of the hill. Everybody had fun and is looking forward to it next year. Longnose Gar [Lepisosteus Osseus]
MiaoHan Zhu As the society toils onwards its dreams of future. Hardly has the issue on Aquatic Biology fail to arouse people’s interest. As the technology devices are developing quickly, many animal species are dying out, but Longnose Gars, also called Lepisosteus osseus are not, they are very common.
This is a letter from Samamtha Wu in C1 from Indonesia: Dear Winter School Staff,
A student in the same class as me, Aquatic Biology, has caught a Longnose Gar. We named it Gary. I hope you could keep him in winter school Gars are long, slender, predatory fish. to study, since Gary is so small, please They are common in quiet waters, keep him. and they are common in Lake Maxincuckee. Gars have sharp teeth and a -Samamtha Wu thick armor of scales. There’re different types of Gars, such as the Alligator Gar, Longnose Gar, Shortnose Gar. Among all these, Longnose Gars are more often discovered.
Why Can’t We Call Councelors by Their First Name Micaela San Martin Campers can’t call counselors by their first name. If you are out of Woodcraft you might want to call them by their first name. Every day in Woodcraft you have to call them by their camp name for example: Major, Capitan or Lieutenant, followed by their last name. We have to do this because it is a sign of respect and organization,. Some of the counselors really don’t mind but we are supposed to do so at all times. When a camper calls a counselor by their name they don’t mind. It is just depending on which camper calls them like that or, if he or she knows them by any chance. At any time if we call a staff member by their first name in front of the Colonel, we would definitely get in trouble. The best solution would be avoiding it by all means.

Interviewing Colonel Wettig Maggie Stipp
The talented Colonel Wettig does not Penske Storm Shelter only have great military skills and interest, he also has an interesting part Madison Moriarty of military history! When I came to Have you ever seen the Penske Culver, I’ve had my eyes out for peoStorm Shelter? It was donated to ple who are great examples of leaders. Culver Academies by a man named Colonel Wettigs’ military skills caught Robert Penske and is located on the my attention. far side of Woodcraft. Penske was built in 1950 and is 76 years old. It I became filled with so many queswas built to provide safety for very tions! I couldn’t hold back my quesserious storms that might endanger tions so I grabbed my paper and pen, the campus and its campers. checked my watch, and set off for an Why is Penske so safe in a storm? That might be because the building was built by a hill and with stone walls. The building is safe and secured by having part of the building underground. When campers go to Penske they have to sit with their unit or division, because everybody needs to be accounted for. When campers go to Penske, they have to stay there until it’s safe to go back outside. I think Penske is interesting because, when everyone in Woodcraft is at the shelter, the humidity inside the building makes the walls sweat. So the campers must make sure not to run or else they will slip on the ground. If you ever are forced to go to Penske don’t be scared, it’s the safest place you can be in Woodcraft.
interview.
When I found him, I asked for an interview and he kindly accepted. I first asked him how long he had been marching. He said he started taking his first marching steps when he was 14 years old and has been doing it ever since. Marching as a young teen, I thought, he had to have a reason to.
Then I asked if he ever wanted to be in the military or have a military position. He thought for a moment and then said ever since he was a boy, he loved the dream of being in the military. Understanding that CMA is a great school, I asked why he chose out of all the places to work he came here. He said that when he was a boy, his mother had a friend who had a son who went to Winter School and gave his parents a catalog on Culver. He went into Winter School and took his first steps of becoming a forever friend to CMA. After he finished his school years at Culver, he went to the military for around 20 years before coming back to Culver to become Lieutenant Colonel Wettig of Culver’s very own Woodcraft!
