FULL STEAM AHEAD for New Bridgeton Satellite
The mayor of Bridgeton calls it a “game changer” for his city – an innovative joint venture known as STEAMWorks that puts a Cumberland County College satellite right in the heart of the downtown district. The 19th century building at 46-50 E. Commerce Street is being transformed to accommodate 21st century technology, including 3-D printers and programmable logic controllers (PLC’s), computer aided drafting software (AutoCAD), robotics, computer aided machining (mechatronics) and a recording studio. STEAMWorks (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) will be the first so-called “makerspace” in the region. The partnership between Cumberland County College, the City of Bridgeton and the Cumberland Empowerment Zone will give entrepreneurs access to tools that will help them create prototypes and realize their creative visions. The college will overseetraining and curriculum at the facility to ensure users can safely and competently utilize the technology. Special “mini-courses” will be offered. “STEAMWorks promises to provide county residents, students and businesses with a facility necessary to allow them to compete in a technology-driven job market,” said Bridgeton Mayor Albert Kelly. "Whether it’s a small business prototyping a new product, a student developing new skills or an entrepreneur launching a start-up, the makerspace provides the means to keep pace with a fast-changing marketplace.” The facility will be open to the general public through memberships, and once a person has been trained on the use of the equipment, they can create almost anything on the 3-D printers that will be a mainstay of the facility. For the musically-minded, the college will also conduct classes in audio-engineering through a fully stocked recording studio, and when classes are not in session, musicians will be able to book studio time and the engineering needed for making demos and related projects. The college’s Workforce and Community Education division will offer a number of certificate classes at STEAMWorks throughout the spring. “Cumberland County College is one of our greatest assets and we're looking forward to their presence here on this side of the county,” said Mayor Kelly. “STEAMWorks is an innovative program, and it underscores why Cumberland is among the top two-year colleges in the nation.”
