Making the world a little greener

The Sage Page with our spare thyme!

June’s Meeting BYOB for Glass Etching! Just bring the glass container of your choice. Etching cream will be supplied. I’ll also bring a variety of stencils, stickers & tape for use in creating designs. You could recycle a wine bottle to use as an oil or vinegar container. Or maybe you have some wine glasses you’d like to use. Any colored or clear glass except pyrex will work. If you have stencils or other materials that might make a neat design, please feel free to bring them. I’m looking forward to it!

Wednesday, June 25th @ 7:00pm @ The Miniature Cottage, 410 E. Iris in Berry Hill (near 100 Oaks in Nashville)

At May’s meeting we brainstormed ideas for future meetings or group outings. Here’s what we came up with: making fabric concrete pots, making broken pot fairy gardens, making scented wax melts, going on a wild edible walk & taking a class at the Savory spice shop in Franklin. What do you think? If you have other ideas, please feel free to submit them!

Pea Pickin’ Picnic at Richard’s Farm

The Sage Page with our spare thyme!

Pictured are Jean, Lynne & Lauren pickin’ peas.

Thanks Richard! We enjoyed the pea picking, the picnic & especially the May wine. Did you miss it? Richard has asked us back in July! Tomatoes & other veggies should be ready to pick. We’ll discuss dates at June’s meeting. Hard work, but so worth it! Thanks Michelle & Lauren for submitting farm pictures!

Container Crazy! This year I’ve had fun with container gardening. The bunnies drove me to it - cute lil’ buggers eat anything within reach. I used every pot in my shed this year! Thought I’d share a few pictures. Send me a quick pic of your favorite container garden & I’ll share it with the group. 2

Make watermelon ‘ice cubes’ by freezing 24 watermelon cubes on a parchment lined baking sheet (keeps for up to 2 days). Puree remaining watermelon & sugar in a blender until smooth. Strain if desired, should yield 3 cups. Using a wooden spoon, muddle basil & tequila in a glass pitcher. Stir in watermelon juice & triple sec. Place watermelon cubes in glasses. Using a cocktail shaker, mix 3/4 cup margarita with 1 cup ice. Strain into a glass. Repeat. Serve garnished with basil. Makes 4 cocktails. recipe from http://www.marthastewart.com/313652/watermelon-basil-margaritas

Herbal Sodas 1/2 cups sugar 3/4 ounce fresh herbs, such as basil, lemon verbena, mint, tarragon, or thyme

Put sugar & 1 cup water into a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat; add herbs. Cover; let cool completely. Pour syrup through a fine sieve into a small bowl; discard herbs. Stir in lemon juice. Refrigerate at least 30 minutes. Fill glasses with ice. Add 2 to 4 tablespoons syrup; top with sparkling water or club soda, and stir. You might also try this syrup in other cocktails or even a snowcone. No snowcone machine?
