care and that decisions are informed by the local, needs-based support available.176 Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner (IASC) Another part of the UK’s response to modern slavery was the creation of the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner (IASC) role in Part Four of the Modern Slavery Act. The role of the Commissioner is: ‘to encourage good practice in the prevention, detection, investigation and prosecution of slavery and human trafficking offences, as well as in the identification of victims’. 177 The Commissioner has jurisdiction across the UK and their duties include creating a strategic plan and producing annual reports to be laid before Parliament by the Secretary of State. 178 Figure 5 below outlines the Commissioner’s current strategic priorities:
