Why I love Cumbria
STEVE CRAM CBE, ATHLETE
From jaw-dropping landscapes to heart-warming experiences, lung bursting activities to fun-filled challenges, Cumbria has it all. I never tire of its ability to awaken the adventurer in us all, whilst always remaining accessible and unbelievably inspiring no matter how many times I travel there.
MICHAEL WILSON OFFICIAL KINGS GUIDE TO THE SANDS (OF MORECAMBE BAY)
As a fisherman and the appointed Kings Guide to the River Kent Estuary it is an honour to have the pleasure of the Bay in my life day in, day out. During the week, I fish; and every other weekend, I guide 1000 walkers across the estuary from Arnside to Grange. As well as bringing a huge tourist income for local businesses, this also puts the areas on the map!
It’s great to share my passion for the bay with local schools & groups. It’s important everyone knows the dangers but also knows how wonderful the bay is; and how to enjoy it safely.
TESS PIKE BLUE BADGE GUIDE
Yorkshire is often described as "God's Own Country" and I feel blessed to live and guide in that part of the Dales which nestles in the east of Cumbria. An area of tranquillity dominated by the velvety-carpeted Howgill Fells, grazed by Rough Fell sheep. The landscape is criss-crossed by ancient lanes and old droving routes, dotted with hamlets and towns - historically at a day's horse ride apart; nowadays, perfect cycling or walking distance!
The neighbouring landscapes of the Eden Valley and North Pennines offer much to discover, with historic country halls, stunning nature, and fantastic food & drink. I love guiding visitors here, and when I’ve been busy working further afield, it provides a real balm to the soul!
JOANNE HUNTER GRASMERE GINGERBREAD®
As a proud custodian of Sarah Nelson’s Grasmere Gingerbread® - which celebrates its 170th anniversary in 2024 - I am particularly passionate about Cumbria’s unique food history. Our amazing artisan food producers and creative chefs have together created a unique culinary landscape.
Our cultural heritage, people, and built environment are also special: from our city of Carlisle, coastal villages and isolated upland cottages to mountainous hamlets and lowland towns, there is always something new to see, hear, feel, touch and, of course, taste.
EWAN FROST-PENNINGTON MUNCASTER CASTLE
The western Lake District is my home: a mix of stunningly beautiful landscapes and friendly, welcoming people. I spent years working in California but when the chance came to return home there was no hesitation. Our ancestral family home of Muncaster Castle has unforgettable views to the Eskdale fells that never fail to impress, whatever the weather. The Cumbrian coastline is a short stroll away and we have not one but two UNESCO World Heritage Sites here (The Lake District and Hadrian’s Wall). I’m still amazed that it remains a secret relying on chance or connections with the area for people to stumble across this gem. This alone gives it a magical quality.
EXPERIENCE THE MAGIC OF OUR DARK SKIES
With some of the darkest skies in the country, the Lake District, Cumbria easily outshines the city lights for a holiday to remember, no matter the time of year. Get outdoors and breathe in the fresh country air, as you gaze across landscapes illuminated by the light of the stars.
DARK SKIES FESTIVAL
Experience the wonders of the night sky at our Dark Skies Festival in October / November. A stellar programme of events shines a light on the magic of the skies above, from starlit wild swimming to outdoor dining; expert talks to photography workshops.
DARK SKY FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATION
Relax and enjoy the stars from your accommodation. Choose from remote cottages beneath clear star-studded skies; shepherds huts with stargazing roofs; hotel rooms with telescopes included; and outdoor hot tubs where you can admire the galaxies with a glass of fizz.
WHERE TO STARGAZE?
With Cumbria’s low levels of light pollution, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Try the Dark Sky Discovery site of Low Gillerthwaite; Ennerdale; the remote and beautiful Wasdale Valley; or Asby Common in the Eden Valley. Grizedale and Whinlatter Forests have regular stargazing events for all the family to enjoy.

FELLS FOR ALL 2024 FESTIVAL
Introducing Fells For All: a festival taking place in 2024, to highlight the accessible offer across our region.
100 years ago, the Fell and Rock Climbing Society gifted 12 peaks to the National Trust as a war memorial to those who lost their lives during the First World War. The idea was to allow access to these places for all, so that everyone can benefit from the health and wellbeing benefits of a day in the fells. Referred to as The Great Gift, a dedication ceremony was held in 1924. This was led by Geoffrey Winthrop Young: a climber who suffered an injury during the war, and developed his own prosthetic leg so he could continue climbing.
Inspired by The Great Gift and Geoffrey Winthrop Young’s passion for access to the outdoors for everyone, a three month festival will take place in the run up to the 100th anniversary of The Great Gift. Held across May, June and July 2024, Fells For All will feature a varied programme of events to help visitors access our landscapes, both indoors and out. From quieter theatre sessions to accessible adventures, Cumbria’s landscapes are here for all to enjoy. Join us and create your own adventure, with accessible walks; tramper hire; and so much more to discover.

MOTORHOMES & CAMPERVANS
Visiting in your motorhome or campervan? Choose from one of our many well equipped sites, park up, and get the kettle on! Whatever you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it here: there’s coast, woodland, lake and valley sites, all of varying sizes and facilities, so you can choose the one to suit you.
As well as wide, easily accessible roads, we also have narrow country lanes here in Cumbria. Luckily, most of them have passing places to avoid congestion; and it's important not to park in these, as well as avoiding narrow passes and single track roads wherever possible. Be careful to never block roads and gateways.
Why not be inspired by our Cumbrian Coastal Route 200? This 200 mile tour has been designed to help you explore this captivating and unique area. The route has been split into five smaller sections, each do-able in a day.
Once you’re parked up, why not explore like a local? Pick up food and drink in farm shops and delis; visit attractions telling the story of the area; relax in cosy pubs, restaurants and cafes; and immerse yourself in the local culture.
Our online guide has all the information you need to plan your next getaway to the Lake District, Cumbria, in your van visitlakedistrict.com/vanlife
YOUR OWN SPACE...
CAMPING
Camping: there’s nothing quite like it to help you reconnect and reset. Go to sleep beneath the stars and wake up to freshly brewed coffee and an al-fresco breakfast cooked fresh on the stove. Admire the view: whether you’re surrounded by Lakeland mountains or enjoying coastal views, our campsites are set in some stunning locations. Choose from remote sites with just the basics, or holiday parks with pools, shops and bars. You can even stay in a camping barn: great for larger groups.
HOSTELS
Looking for a great base for your walking holiday; or somewhere to stay with a larger group? A hostel could be the perfect choice; they offer excellent value for money, too. Whether dramatically located on the side of a fell, tucked away in a bustling town, or situated by a beautiful lake, our hostels offer budget-savvy travellers clean and basic comforts without having to compromise on location.
GLAMPING
Toast the day’s adventures from your own outdoor hot tub; admire the sunrise from a treehouse; or relax in a comfy glamping pod, complete with stove and proper bed: glamping offers the camping experience…just with a few added luxuries. Think plugs for your phone, private bathrooms, log burners and plenty more. There are even quirky options like vintage railway carriages and yurts.
