LET US WORSHIP Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost • 11:00 am • October 4, 2020

THE COMMUNITY GATHERS GATHERING

My Shepherd Will Supply My Need — arr. Mack Wilberg My shepherd will supply my need; Jehovah is his Name. In pastures fresh, he makes me feed beside the living stream. He brings my wandering spirit back, when I forsake his ways, and leads me for his mercy's sake in paths of truth and grace. When I walk through the shades of death, thy presence is my stay; one word of thy supporting breath drives all my fears away. Thy hand, in sight of all my foes, doth still my table spread; my cup with blessings overflows, thine oil anoints my head. The sure provisions of my God attend me all my days; O may Thy house be mine abode and all my work be praise! There would I find a settled rest while others go and come, no more a stranger nor a guest; but like a child at home.

GREETING INTROIT

Heilig, Heilig, Heilig (from Deutsche Messe) — Franz Schubert Holy, holy, holy, holy is the Lord. Holy, holy, holy, holy is He alone. He, who had no beginning, He, who was always, is forever and will reign eternally! Omnipotence, wonder, love, far and wide!

CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 19 (In Unison)

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth. The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward. But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression. May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

HYMN (found on page six)

#73 O Worship the King — LYONS

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

After each prayer, the leader may conclude: Lord, in your mercy. All may respond: Hear our prayer.

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED

CANTICLE

What a Friend We Have in Jesus — arr. Charles McCartha What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear. What a privelege to carry everything to God in prayer. O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer. 'Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, and to take him at his word, just to rest upon his promise, and to know, "Thus saith the Lord." Are we weak and heavy laden, burdened by a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge; take it to the Lord in prayer. Can you find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share? In his arms he'll take and shield you, you will find a solace there. I'm so glad I learned to trust you, precious Jesus, Savior, friend; and to know that you are with me, will be with me to the end. O how sweet to trust in Jesus, just from sin and self to cease; just from Jesus, simply taking life and rest, and joy and peace.

SCRIPTURE 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10

Paul, Silas and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: grace and peace to you. We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers. We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s message rang out from you not

only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere. Therefore we do not need to say anything about it, for they themselves report what kind of reception you gave us. They tell how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath. (NIV) This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. SERMON

WE RENEW OUR COMMITMENT INVITATION TO OFFERING OFFERTORY

Come Home — Craig Courtney Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, calling for you and for me; see, on the portals He's waiting and watching, watching for you and for me. Come home, come home, you who are weary come home. Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading, pleading for you and for me? Why should we linger and heed not His mercies, mercies for you and for me. O for the wonderful love He has promised, promised for you and for me! Though we have sinned, He has mercy and pardon, pardon for you and for me.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Almighty and forgiving God, we your unworthy servants give you most humble thanks for all your goodness and loving kindness, to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. Give us such an awareness of your mercies, that our hearts may be thankful, and that we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

#369 Blessed Assurance — BLESSED ASSURANCE

BENEDICTION

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you. May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. Amen.

VOLUNTARY

He Has the Power — Leon C. Roberts Christ! He rose to tell the world he has the power, almighty power in his hands. The grave could not hold the Son of Man. He has the power, almighty power in his hands. I'm so glad he lives today. He gave his life for me, he gave his life for you, and I'm so glad he has the power in his hands. 5
