WE GATHER AS GOD'S PEOPLE VOLUNTARY

If Thou But Trust in God to Guide Thee — Johann Sebastian Bach

GREETING INTROIT CALL TO WORSHIP

O God, our Guide and Guardian, you have led us apart from the busy world into the quiet of your house. Grant us grace to worship you in Spirit and in truth, to the comfort of our souls and the upbuilding of every good purpose and holy desire. Enable us to do more perfectly the work to which you have called us, that we may not fear the coming of night, when we shall resign into your hands the tasks which you have committed to us. So may we worship you not with our lips at this hour, but in word and deed all the days of our lives; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

GLORIA PATRI

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORD'S PRAYER

Within Our Darkest Night — Jacques Berthier WIthin our darkest night You kindle the fire that never dies away.

Please stand as you are able.

We are not alone, we live in God’s world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the church: to celebrate God’s presence, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen #71 Glory Be to the Father — GREATOREX Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. After each prayer, the leader may conclude: Lord, in your mercy. All may respond: Hear our prayer. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. 3

BAPTISMAL HYMN

Child of Blessing, Child of Promise — STUTTGART Child of blessing, child of promise, baptized with the Spirit's sign; with this water God has sealed you unto love and grace divine. Do you as Christ's body, the church, reaffirm both your rejection of sin and your commitment to Christ? We do. Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life and include Penelope Gray and Louise, now before you, in your care? With God's help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ. We will surround Penelope Gray and Louise with a community of love and forgiveness, that they may grow in their service to others. We will pray for them, that they may be true disciples who walk in the way that leads to life.

HYMN

Child of God your loving Parent, learn to know whose child you are. Grow to laugh and sing and worship, trust and love God more than all. (Children, kindergartners through third grade, are invited to exit the Sanctuary for Children’s Worship. Children will return to reserved pews in the Sanctuary at the close of worship.)

GOD'S WORD PROCLAIMED CANTICLE (Isaiah 54:10)

For the Mountains Shall Depart (from Elijah), Op. 70, No. 37 — Felix Mendelssohn For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed, but Thy kindness shall not depart from me, neither shall the covenant of Thy peace be removed.

SCRIPTURE Mark 13:1-8

As he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings!” Then Jesus asked him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.” When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished?” Then Jesus began to say to them, “Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs. (NRSV) This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

OUR RESPONSE TO THE WORD AND THANKSGIVING INVITATION TO OFFERING

You may give by capturing our QR code, mailing to our post office box or place your offering in our boxes located at the entrance to the Sanctuary.

OFFERTORY

Psalm 91 — Craig Courtney You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, say to the Lord, "My refuge, my fortress, my God in whom I trust." He will deliver you from the fowler's snare, and under His wings you will find refuge. His faithfulness shall be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror by night or the arrow that flies by day, or the pestilence that stalks in darkness or ravages at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand; but you will not be harmed. If you make the Most High your dwelling even the Lord, who is my refuge, then no harm will befall you; no scourge will approach your tent. He will give His angels charge over you; on their hands they will lift you up lest you strike your foot upon a stone.

DOXOLOGY

#95 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow — OLD 100th Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Receive these gifts, O Lord. May they be magnified by your Holy Spirit to teach your children about your love, to show the world your grace, to bring healing to the broken hearted, to comfort the grieving, to embrace the needy, and to praise your name. We offer ourselves as instruments of your peace to the world. We offer our talents, our time, and our gifts to you. Use us as you will. Deploy us for your benevolence. Transform our hearts as we transform the world. We pray this in your Holy name. Amen.
