WE GATHER AS GOD'S PEOPLE VOLUNTARY
All Things Bright and Beautiful — James M. Bates
GREETING INTROIT Psalm 96
All That Hath Life and Breath Praise Ye the Lord! — René Clausen All that hath life and breath praise ye the Lord, shout to the Lord, Alleluia! Praise Him, laud Him, Alleluia!
CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 84
How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God. Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young— a place near your altar, Lord Almighty, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you. Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools. They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion. Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty; listen to me, God of Jacob. Look on our shield, O God; look with favor on your anointed one. Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH
†
†
Please stand as you are able.
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
Glory be to the Father — GREATOREX Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. After each prayer, the leader may conclude: Lord, in your mercy. All may respond: Hear our prayer.
THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
BAPTISMAL HYMN
Child of Blessing, Child of Promise — STUTTGART Child of blessing, child of promise, baptized with the Spirit's sign; with this water God has sealed you unto love and grace divine. Do you as Christ's body, the church, reaffirm both your rejection of sin and your commitment to Christ? We do. Will you nurture one another in the Christian faith and life and include Madi Belle, now before you, in your care? We give thanks for all that God has given you and welcome you in Christian love. With God's help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ. We will surround Madi Belle with a community of love and forgiveness, that she may grow in her service to others. We will pray for her, that she may be a true disciple who walks in the way that leads to life.
HYMN
Child of God your loving Parent, learn to know whose child you are. Grow to laugh and sing and worship, trust and love God more than all. (Children, kindergartners through third grade, are invited to exit the Sanctuary for Children’s Worship. Children will return to reserved pews in the Sanctuary at the close of worship.)
GOD'S WORD PROCLAIMED SCRIPTURE 1 Kings 8: 1, 6, 10-11, 22-30, 41-43
4
Then King Solomon summoned into his presence at Jerusalem the elders of Israel, all the heads of the tribes and the chiefs of the Israelite families, to bring up the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Zion, the City of David. The priests then brought the ark of the Lord’s covenant to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple, the Most Holy Place, and put it beneath the wings of the cherubim. When the priests withdrew from the Holy Place, the cloud filled the temple of the Lord. And the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled his temple. Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in front of the whole assembly of Israel, spread out his hands toward heaven and said: “Lord, the God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below—you who keep your
covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way. You have kept your promise to your servant David my father; with your mouth you have promised and with your hand you have fulfilled it—as it is today. Now Lord, the God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father the promises you made to him when you said, ‘You shall never fail to have a successor to sit before me on the throne of Israel, if only your descendants are careful in all they do to walk before me faithfully as you have done.’ And now, God of Israel, let your word that you promised your servant David my father come true. But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built! Yet give attention to your servant’s prayer and his plea for mercy, Lord my God. Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence this day. May your eyes be open toward this temple night and day, this place of which you said, ‘My Name shall be there,’ so that you will hear the prayer your servant prays toward this place. Hear the supplication of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray toward this place. Hear from heaven, your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive. As for the foreigner who does not belong to your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of your name— for they will hear of your great name and your mighty hand and your outstretched arm—when they come and pray toward this temple, then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Do whatever the foreigner asks of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know your name and fear you, as do your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears your Name." (NIV) This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God. SERMON

OUR RESPONSE TO THE WORD AND THANKSGIVING INVITATION TO OFFERING OFFERTORY
Come Dwell in Solomon's Walls — Z. Randall Stroope When the final timber lay 'gainst the measured stones, with the doorposts in their place overlaid with gold. The Lord appeared to Solomon, blessing all the house, the temple of the ark of God, pure and whole. Come dwell in Solomon's walls, come and dwell in the house of the Lord, where the humble bow down, seeking wisdom and strength, for the Lord dwells within and heals their land. Come dwell in Solomon's walls, come and dwell in the house of the Lord, where wisdom and righteousness, justice and holiness, join at the feet of God. When the people of this house kneel and humbly pray, when they turn from dark to light and your will obey, O Lord of Heaven and Lord of earth, show favor on this house, and heal, restore, forgive, and bless, Lord, we pray.
