LET US WORSHIP Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost • 11:00 am • October 25, 2020

THE COMMUNITY GATHERS VOLUNTARY

Prelude and Fugue in F Major, BuxWV 145 — Dietrich Buxtehude

GREETING INTROIT

Wake, Awake, for Night is Flying — WACHET AUF Wake, awake, for night is flying, the watchmen on the heights are crying. Awake, Jerusalem, at last! Midnight hears the welcome voices and at the thrilling cry rejoices; come forth, ye viginis, night is past; the Bridgeroom comes awake, your lamps with gladness take: Alleluia! And for his marriage feast prepare, for ye must go and meet him there.

CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 100 (In Unison)

Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

#117 O God, Our Help in Ages Past — ST. ANNE

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

After each prayer, the leader may conclude: Lord, in your mercy. All may respond: Hear our prayer.

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED CANTICLE

Keep Your Lamps! — African American Spiritual, arr. André Thomas Keep your lamps trimmed and burning, the time is drawing nigh. Children, don't get weary 'til your work is done. Christian, journey soon be over, the time is drawing nigh.

SCRIPTURE Matthew 25:1-13

“Then the kingdom of heaven shall be compared to ten maidens who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept. But at midnight there was a cry, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those maidens rose and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise replied, ‘Perhaps there will not be enough for us and for you; go rather to the dealers and buy for yourselves.’ And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast; and the door was shut. Afterward the other maidens came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he replied, ‘Truly, I say to you, I do not know you.’ Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour. (RSV) This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

SERMON

"Modern Day Oil Crisis"

WE RENEW OUR COMMITMENT INVITATION TO OFFERING OFFERTORY

I Want to Be Ready — arr. Ted Hunter I want to be ready to walk in Jerusalem just like John. O John, what did you say? That you'd be there on judgment day. John said the city was just four-square. and he declared he'd meet me there. Now sinners, mind how you step on the cross. Your feet might slip, and your soul get lost. I want to walk in Jerusalem just like John.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Most holy and gracious God accept these gifts from our hearts. May they be used to share the message of your love with a world that is hurting. May these gifts shine like a light in the darkness offering hope, and peace. May we offer ourselves and dedicate our lives to your service this week using our talents and time to build your kingdom. All this we pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
