THE COMMUNITY GATHERS

The prelude signifies the beginning of worship. You are invited to be in a spirit of prayer and meditation. Please silence all mobile communication devices.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

(Children, kindergartners through third grade, are invited to exit the Sanctuary for Children’s Worship. Children will return to reserved pews in the Sanctuary at the close of worship.)

GREETING

INTROIT

All That Hath Life and Breath — René Clausen

All that hath life and breath praise ye the Lord. Shout to the Lord, Alleluia. Praise Him! Laud Him! Alleluia.

†OPENING PRAYER

O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: increase and multiply upon us your mercy; that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal, that we lose not the things eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

†HYMN OF PROCESSION

#89 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee — HYMN TO JOY

†AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is the one true church, apostolic and universal, whose holy faith let us now declare:

We believe in God the Father, infinite in wisdom, power, and love, whose mercy is over all his works, and whose will is ever directed to his children’s good. We believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of man, the gift of the Father’s unfailing grace, the ground of our hope, and the promise of our deliverance from sin and death. We believe in the Holy Spirit as the divine presence in our lives, whereby we are kept in perpetual remembrance of the truth of Christ, and find strength and help in time of need. We believe that this faith should manifest itself in the service of love as set forth in the example of our blessed Lord, to the end that the kingdom of God may come upon the earth. Amen.

†GLORIA PATRI

#71 Glory Be to the Father — GREATOREX Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

OFFERTORY

O Love — Elaine Hagenberg

O Love that will not let me go, I rest my weary soul in thee; I give thee back the life I owe, that in thy ocean depths its flow may richer, fuller be. O Joy that seeks me through pain, I cannot close my heart to thee; I trace the rainbow through the rain, and feel the promise is not vain, that morn shall tearless be.

†DOXOLOGY

#95 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow — OLD 100th Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

†PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Most holy and gracious God accept these gifts from our hearts. May they be used to share the message of your love with a world that is hurting. May these gifts shine like light in the darkness offering hope, and peace. May we offer ourselves and dedicate our lives to your service this week using our talents and time to build your kingdom. All this we pray in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

CONGREGATIONAL CARE

STEPHEN MINISTRY

“After my stroke, I lost the ability to drive. I always thought I would be the one to take care of my wife, but now she is having to take care of me. Little things like going to the grocery store without assistance are now impossible. I am completely dependent on others in a way I’ve never been before. Maybe a Stephen Minister could help me work through my loss of independence.”

If you or someone you know could benefit from Stephen Ministry, please contact Deena Morgan (336-692-2314) or Wilba Brady (336-723-6236).

SUMMER YOUTH BIBLE STUDY

FEASTING ON THE WORD

Throughout Confirmation you are challenged to read the Gospel of Luke so that you might have a bigger perspective of Jesus’ life, who he is, and the example he offers us as ‘Christ-followers’. This summer, for our Bible study, we are going to dive deeper into what Luke has to teach us about the Lord. Join us as we feast on the Word and some good food. After all, this is one of the things Jesus did, he ate with people and talked with people about the Kingdom of Heaven. Each Sunday at 5:00 pm we will gather at various restaurants in town to feast together on food and word. Watch our weekly announcements for details about where we will meet each week. (cost $10-$20 depending on what you order to eat!)

MUSIC & ARTS

Loving Lord, on this final day of our mission team’s journey, may the stories of the week fill the busses, their laughter and love fill their hearts to overflowing, and may you prepare them to reenter the world they have left behind for the last eight days. Even though their bodies are weary Lord, their hearts are so full! Send your angels to surround them and stand guard so that they may return home to their families safely. Help their families to, not only hear our stories of transformation, but to truly listen to the miraculous work you have done in the world and in our lives. Amen.

YOUTH SUNDAY SCHOOL

Join us every Sunday at 10:00 am on the fourth floor (@Youth Commons) for all-youth Sunday school. As always there are breakfast snacks, coffee & drinks, and friends & fellowship before the lesson every week!

“What’s Faith Got to Do With It?” As teenagers, we have all kinds of thoughts about what we might be or do when we grow up. The possibilities are endless and so very exciting! Come listen to different ‘grown-ups’ from our church family share what it is that they do (their work), how they decided what they wanted to do with their life, how they got there, and what their faith has to do with it. This is a great opportunity to hear from and be inspired by some very exceptional people.

Centenary UMC will hold a called Charge Conference at the conclusion of the Church Council meeting which begins at 12:30 pm. The purpose of the Charge Conference and only business to be transacted is the ratification of the compensation for Rev. Oliver Helsabeck as set by the Staff/Parish Relations Committee. The voting members of the Charge Conference are the members of the Church Council, the appointed clergy, delegates to Annual Conference, and retired clergy who hold their charge conference relationship with Centenary.

CHILDREN’S CREATIVE ARTS EXPERIENCE RETURNS THIS FALL CAE returns on September 13! This popular program includes activities for children ages 2 through 5th grade during Nourish each week. Our 2- and 3-year-olds will wiggle, giggle and grow in a Kindermusik class, and children ages 4+ will have a blast in our Creative Arts Experience exploring singing, chimes, Kindermusik, Orff instruments, drumming, creative movement, drama, visual art, worship leadership and more!
