INTRODUCTION TO THE READERS: THIS IS A COLLECTION OF WORKS THAT PORTRAY THE ARCHITECTURAL JOURNEY I HAVE EMBARKED ON AND ONE THAT I CONTINUE TO PURSUE. I AM CONSTANTLY EXPLORING THE INTRICACIES THAT ARCHITECTURE HAS TO OFFER AND IT NEVER FALLS SHORT TO IMPRESS MY CURIOSITY. THE METAMORPHIC AND EVOLUTIONARY NATURE OF ARCHITECTURE IS SO FASCINATING - THE ABILITY IT HAS TO SHAPE INTO AN ENVIRONMENT AND REACT TO THE SURROUNDING CONTEXT IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE ITS NEIGHBOURS I FIND TO BE QUITE WONDERFUL. “I THINK ARCHITECTURE BECOMES INTERESTING WHEN IT HAS A DOUBLE CHARACTER, THAT IS, WHEN IT IS AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE BUT, AT THE SAME TIME AS COMPLEX AS POSSIBLE” - TADAO ANDO I HOPE THAT MY SERIES OF WORKS WILL HELP INSPIRE IDEAS AND ENGAGE INTERESTING DIALOGUE TO ACT AS A DEPOSIT OF CONTRIBUTION TO THIS DYNAMIC INDUSTRY WE CALL ARCHITECTURE.

HANNAM SUPERMARKET N O R T H VANCO UVER, BC PROFESSIONAL WORK (2017) THE HANNAM SUPERMARKET IS A LOCAL KOREAN GROCERY CHAIN THAT ORIGINATED IN VANCOUVER, AND IS ADDING ANOTHER STORE TO ITS ROSTER IN NORTH VANCOUVER. THE DESIGN OF THIS TENANT IMPROVEMENT PROJECT WAS ENGAGING BECAUSE OF THE VARYING UNKNOWNS OF THE EXISTING BUILDING WHICH ENCOURAGED THE COLLECTIVE OF CONSULTANTS TO COLLABORATE AT A HIGH LEVEL IN ORDER TO ADAPT AND CORRECT ANY ABRUPT ISSUES. THE MAIN FOCUS WAS THE INTERIOR DECOR AND LAYOUT - THE CLIENT WANTED A SENSE OF IDENTITY AT EACH DEPARTMENT WHICH OPENED UP MANY DIFFERENT DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES. ONE PROMINENT FEATURE WOULD BE THE FORMATION OF THE ENTRANCE BULKHEAD WHICH WAS DERIVED BY THE EXISTING ANGLED BRACES AT AN ATTEMPT TO RESPECT THE EXISTING STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE BUILDING WHILE PROVIDING AN INTERESTING AND AESTHETICALLY PLEASING SOLUTION.

ROGER RESIDENCE W E S T VANCOUVER, BC PROFESSIONAL WORK (2017) THE ROGER RESIDENCE IS A RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT LOCATED ON THE WEST END OF VANCOUVER AND DESIGNED TO EMBED INTO THE SURROUNDING CONTEXT. ONE OF THE MAIN FEATURES OF THE HOUSE IS A CENTRAL ROCK GARDEN THAT EMPHASIZES THE SITE TERRAIN AND ACTS AS A SHOW PIECE AT THE CORE OF THE RESIDENCE. THE SCOPE OF WORK FOR THIS PROJECT WAS TO EXPLORE DIFFERENT MATERIALS AND THEIR TECTONIC COMPATIBILITY TO DERIVE A CONCEPT THAT REFLECTS THE IMMEDIATE SITE AND SURROUNDINGS - EVIDENTLY, RAW MATERIALS SUCH AS WOOD AND CONCRETE WERE SELECTED. METAL PANELS WERE ALSO USED BUT WITH MONOLITHIC TONES TO HELP EMPHASIZE THE EARTH TONES BROUGHT OUT BY THE OTHER MATERIALS.

UPPER SKEENA H A Z E LTON, BC PROFESSIONAL WORK (2015) THIS SERIES OF WORK WAS AN EFFORT TO CONVEY THE VISION OF EXPANDING THE UPPER SKEENA REGION IN ORDER TO IMPROVE STRAINING UNEMPLOYMENT, HEALTH, AND EDUCATIONAL ISSUES IN THE AREA. THE “HEART OF THE HAZELTONS” DEVELOPMENT WAS A STRATEGY DEVELOPED BY THE LEADERS IN HAZELTON, BC WHICH INCLUDES RE-PURPOSING THE EXISTING ICE ARENA, AND BUILDING SEVERAL OTHER CIVIC FACILITIES (RECREATION CENTRE, SENIOR CARE FACILITY, GREEN HOUSE, AND BIOMASS PLANT) TO FOSTER A MORE ECONOMICAL AND SOCIALLY SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY.

LABSTALK E A S T VANCOUVER, BC EDUCATIONAL WORK (2015) LABSTALK WAS A TERM PROJECT DEVELOPED AS A PART OF A MASTER PLANNING CONCEPT FOR THE FALSE CREEK FLATS WITH THE OBJECTIVE TO EXPAND ON THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY OF THE DISTRICT. THIS PROJECT WAS A COLLABORATIVE WITH THE CITY OF VANCOUVER AND SEVERAL INTERDISCIPLINARY LOCAL CONSULTANTS. LABSTALK IS AN AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH CENTRE GEARED TOWARDS PROVIDING AN INNOVATIVE SPACE TO FURTHER THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF URBAN FARMING WHILE ALSO FACILITATING AS A LEARNING HUB TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES. THE INTEGRATED VERTICAL GARDENS CREATE A DYNAMIC ATMOSPHERE WHERE RESEARCHERS, SCIENTISTS, AND URBAN FARMERS CAN COLLABORATE TO DISCOVER MORE EFFICIENT WAYS TO CULTIVATE FRESH PRODUCE, AS WELL AS ENGAGE IN NEIGHBOURHOOD FOOD NETWORKING. LABSTALK IS EQUIPPED WITH VARIOUS METHODS OF NURTURING AND GROWING AGRICULTURAL PRODUCE. THE SERIES OF PONIC SYSTEMS (GEOPONICS, HYDROPONIC, AEROPONICS) AND LED GROWTH SYSTEM WILL BE DISPLAYED AND SHOWCASED AROUND THE BUILDING TO PROVIDE A VISUAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR THE PUBLIC. THE BUILDING AIMS TO GENERATE ENOUGH AGRICULTURAL PRODUCE TO FEED THE BUILDING’S OCCUPANTS AND TO SUPPLY FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES TO THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBOURHOOD WITH GOALS TO EXPAND SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY THROUGHOUT THE FALSE CREEK AREA.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE E A S T VANCOUVER, BC EDUCATIONAL WORK (2014) THE EMERGENCY RESPONSE CENTRE WAS A DESIGN PROJECT AIMED AT UNDERSTANDING THE REQUIREMENTS FOR HUMAN SURVIVAL DURING A DISASTER. THE FUNCTIONS OF THE BUILDING WAS DEVELOPED TO ADOPT THE BRITISH COLUMBIA EMERGENCY RESPONSE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (BCERMS) WITH SPACES THAT ALLOW MEMBERS OF THE BCIT COMMUNITY TO BE TRAINED IN FIRST AID AND DISASTER RELIEF. THE MULTI-PURPOSE FACILITY WILL ALSO SERVE AS A PLACE FOR SOCIAL GATHERING WITH A VARIETY OF COMMUNAL ACTIVITIES TO ACCOMMODATE THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBOURHOOD. THE BUILDING WILL HAVE A CAFE AND AREAS TO HOST EVENTS ALONG WITH THE INHERENT FLEXIBILITY TO CONVERT INTO A POST DISASTER FOOD AND WATER DISTRIBUTION CENTRE.

MATCHBOX B R I T I S H COLUMBIA COMPETITION WORK: HOUSE IN FOREST (2018) HOUSE IN FOREST IS AN INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION THAT CHALLENGES THE EXPLORATION OF ARCHITECTURAL, LANDSCAPE, AND SITE PLANNING DESIGN WITH THE GOAL OF PROMOTING IDEAS TO PROTECT FORESTS AND ITS ENVIRONMENTS. THIS YEAR’S COMPETITION REVOLVED AROUND THE USE OF TIMBER STRUCTURE TO CONCEIVE A CONCEPT THAT ADVOCATES FOREST SUSTAINABILITY. THIS PROJECT MANAGED TO MAKE IT ONTO HONOURABLE MENTIONS. SEE RESULTS HERE: WWW.HOUSEINFOREST.COM/RESULTS/ FOREST FIRES IN TEMPERATE CONIFEROUS FORESTS OCCUR REGULARLY, HOWEVER, THE PERCENTAGE OF MAN-MADE FOREST FIRES ARE CONSTANTLY INCREASING - IN BRITISH COLUMBIA ALONE, MANMADE FOREST FIRES MAKE UP APPROXIMATELY HALF OF ALL FOREST FIRES IN THE PROVINCE. HOW DO WE HELP RESTORE THE FOREST AFTER A DEVASTATING MAN-MADE FOREST FIRE? HOW DO WE THEN LIVE WITHIN IT DURING AND AFTER RESTORATION AND ALLOW FOR THE FUTURE LONGEVITY OF THE FOREST? MATCHBOX WAS CREATED FROM THESE QUESTIONS. AFTER EXTINGUISHING A DEVASTATED FOREST FIRE, FOREST ECOLOGISTS PROCEED BY ASSESSING DAMAGES TO THE LAND AND IDENTIFYING SALVAGEABLE TREES. DEAD TREES ARE MARKED AND REMOVED FROM THE SITE TO REDUCE IGNITION SOURCES FOR FUTURE FIRES AND EVENTUALLY FABRICATED INTO TIMBER AND BURN WOOD ELEMENTS FOR USE IN MATCHBOX. THIS ALSO ALLOWS US TO MAINTAIN THE WOOD INNATE CARBON STORAGE CAPABILITIES AND FIRE RATING IN A PERMANENT STRUCTURE.

THE IMMEDIATE SITE IS A TEMPERATE CONIFEROUS FOREST CHARACTERIZED BY A CLIFF EDGE OVERLOOKING A SLOPING FOREST FLOOR. THE PROPOSED RAMP INTENDS TO UNIFY THE TWO SITE ELEMENTS WHILE CURVING AROUND MAJOR TREES THAT ARE STILL ALIVE AND IN NEED OF RESTORATION. THE RAMP WIDTH CREATES A BARRIER WHICH MAINTAINS THE OPTIMAL DISTANCE FOR GROWTH BETWEEN DAMAGED TREES AND FUTURE TREES. THE RAMP CONTAINS A SPRINKLER SYSTEM TO PROTECT THE FOREST FROM FUTURE FIRES BY KEEPING THE AIR HUMID DURING DRY SEASONS. THE SPRINKLER SYSTEM ALSO ENABLES CONTROLLED BURNS AFTER FOREST RESTORATION. ROOFTOP GROWING MEDIUM BURNT WOOD CLADDING CLT STRUCTURALLY INSULATED ROOF, FLOOR, AND WALL PANELS PLANTER BOXES GROWING MEDIUM ON STEEL WIRE CHIDORI STYLE CONNECTED WOOD POSTS OPENING FOR MODULE AND AMENITY SPACES BURNT WOOD STAIRS BURNT WOOD RAMP PLYWOOD SLOPED GLULAM BEAMS SPACE FOR SERVICES BLACK INTUMESCENT PAINTED SCREW PILES

KIN-NET I N T E R N ATIONAL COMPETITION WORK: LAKA (2018) LAKA IS AN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION WITH THE OBJECTIVE TO ENGAGE PEOPLE IN THE EXPLORATION OF ADAPTABLE SOLUTIONS IN ARCHITECTURE CAPABLE OF DYNAMIC INTERACTION WITH THEIR SURROUNDINGS - “ARCHITECTURE THAT REACTS”. FOR MORE INFORMATION: LAKAREACTS.COM/COMPETITION-2018/ PROJECT PROLOGUE: THE VASTNESS OF THE EARTH IS DIFFICULT TO COMPREHEND, BUT IT BEGINS TO COME INTO FOCUS AS MORE AND MORE PEOPLE FILL INTO THE GAPS OF SPACES AROUND THE WORLD. GLOBAL POPULATION GROWTH IS CONSTANTLY INCREASING AS INFRASTRUCTURE CONTINUES TO EXPAND WITH A SIMULTANEOUS HUNGER FOR ENERGY TO FUEL DENSIFICATION. THERE IS AN OVERWHELMING YIELD OF DEVELOPMENT AT MULTIPLE SCALES ON AN INTERNATIONAL LEVEL, BUT EVERY PROSPECT WHETHER BIG OR SMALL SHARE A COMMONALITY OF INFLATION WHICH EVENTUALLY LEADS TO THE CULMINATION OF PEOPLE. THE CONGESTION BY-PRODUCT OF DENSIFICATION HAS TRANSFORMED THE WAY PEOPLE USE, INHABIT, AND EVEN HOW THEY MOVE AROUND A SPACE. IT IS THE CAUSE AND EFFECT OF CONSTRUCTION THAT CAN ATTRIBUTE TO THE MOLDING OF A COMMUNITY AND HOW PEOPLE REACT TO IT. FORTUNATELY, THE PROGRESSION OF SOCIETY HAS PAVED WAY FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF BUILDING TECHNOLOGIES WHICH EVIDENTLY ENABLES THE ABILITY TO DESIGN TALLER STRUCTURES. AS A RESULT, POPULATED AREAS ARE ALLEVIATED BY PROVIDING MORE FUNCTIONAL SPACES; HOWEVER, THIS RELIEF ALSO CREATES UNUSABLE SPACES. THE VOID SPACES FORMED ABOVE THE EVER-GROWING COMPLEX WEAVE OF ARTERIAL ROADS BECOME UNUSED VACANT AREAS BETWEEN BUILDINGS.

KIN-NET AIMS TO TACKLE THE SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES CAUSED BY DENSIFICATION THROUGH EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES WITHIN THE VOID SPACES BETWEEN BUILDINGS. THIS CONCEPT RE-IMAGINES THE SPACE WE SEE BETWEEN STRUCTURES AND HOW PEOPLE CAN INTERACT WHILE EXPERIENCING A DIFFERENT WAY OF SOCIALIZING. THE IDEA IS TO CONNECT EXISTING BUILDINGS IN A DENSE LOCATION TO CREATE A PLACE OF GATHERING WHILE ALSO PRODUCING ENERGY THROUGH PIEZOELECTRIC TECHNOLOGY AND REDISTRIBUTING IT TO THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS. THE ORGANIC INTERTWINING NET STRUCTURE MIMICS THE FLOW OF KINETIC ENERGY WHILE PROVIDING A SOCIAL PLATFORM FOR PEOPLE TO COME TOGETHER AND INTERACT WITH ONE ANOTHER. THE TRANSPARENT LAYERED NET STRUCTURE DESIGNED TO SUPPORT A MULTITUDE OF PEOPLE ALSO SETS OUT TO CONVEY THE IDEA OF DENSITY WHICH BECOMES MORE APPARENT THE HIGHER YOU ASCEND AND THE FURTHER YOU LOOK DOWN TO THE BUSY INTERSECTION. THE GOAL OF KIN-NET IS TO SET A CREATIVE PRECEDENT IN THE WORLD OF HARVESTING KINETIC ENERGY WHILE ALSO CONNECTING PEOPLE TO PLACES. THE OVERSIZED CARBON FOOTPRINT IMPOSED BY DENSIFICATION CAN BE DETERRED WITH A MORE CONSCIOUS WAY OF IMPRINTING YOUR FOOT.

COOLHOUSE VA N C O UVER, BC COMPETITION WORK: ICEBOX CHALLENGE (2018) THE ICEBOX CHALLENGE COMPETITION IS A DEMONSTRATION TO SHOW HOW HOMES CAN BE BOTH ENERGY EFFICIENT AND COMFORTABLE. PARTICIPANTS ARE TO DESIGN AN “ICE BOX” TO BOTH BC BUILDING CODE AND PASSIVE HOUSE STANDARDS IN WHICH CASE 1 TONNE OF ICE IS PLACED IN BOTH COOLERS AND MEASURED AFTER 18 DAYS TO VERIFY THE EFFECTIVENESS OF HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDINGS. THE FRONT FACADE OF COOLHOUSE HAS AN OPERABLE AND LOCKABLE WINDOW WHICH EXPRESSES THE THICKNESS OF THE EXTERIOR WALLS, AND AS BOTH HOUSES SHARE THE SAME INTERNAL DIMENSIONS, DEMONSTRATES THAT THERMAL COMFORT NEED NOT COME AT THE EXPENSE OF LIVING SPACE. IDEALLY BOTH STRUCTURES WILL BE REUSED FOR CIVIC BENEFIT AFTER THE ICEBOX CHALLENGE CONCLUDES.
