PROJECT DESCRIPTION My design project is a 24 hours arcade laundrette which locates in Freeling Street. The project starts with a symetrical form with the arcade in the middle. Beside, there is a small street inbetween of the project is Freeling Street itself. My building consists of 2 symetrical forms with 3 stories to fit in the context of Caledonian road. The building itself sit back to match the facade of the Cally Road and a balcony is created to connect the building The floors will be made out of concrete due to the steamy condition of the laundrette. The ground floor will be supported with concrete foundation and other floors constrained to concrete slabs. The main structure of the building is a arcade system. The arcade is built with series of hollow square steel arches, supported by steel columns. The arches consist of a simple truss to carry the whole structure. The roof is a combination of glass and steel frame which is connected to the arches. The 24 hours laundrette project is aiming to create a social place where people interact, share and experience old school drying system. Since The arcade is a typical structure in London, the purpose of this project is to create a signature space in Caledonian Road as well as in London. Eventually, the building might be called “The Cally Arcade in the future of high street development.

London boroughs are thirty two of the thirty three principal subdivisions of the administrative area of Greater London and are each governed by a London borough council. The principal subdivision which is not a borough is the City of London, althought it is often treated as a borough for practical purposes. The London boroughs were all created at the same time as Greater London on 1 April 1965 by the London Government Act 1963 and are a type of local government district. Twelve were designated as Inner London boroughs and twenty as Outer London boroughs. London boroughs have population of around 150000 to 300000, which is equivalent to a typical English city.
The London Borough of Islington is a London borough in Inner London with an estimated population of 215,667. It borders with the borough of Camden which hold the biggest redevelopment shceme in the UK, the King’cross redevelopment. The redevelopment is greatly affecting the borough of Islington even if only a minor part of it is inside of Islington’s borders. Majority of the redevelopment is positioned in the territory of Camden and that puts Islington in a submissive role when it comes to the development. Caledonian Ward, a neighbourhood right at the border between the two boroughs is slowly starting to feel the development around the corner
Caledonian Road is located in the middle of supergentrified areas of London. It runs about a mile and half north-south through the London Borough of Islington. It connects North London, starting at Camden Road near junction Holloway Road, and central London’s Pentonville Road in the South. Today Caledonian Road with its large council housing, Bemerton Estate has remained in the between place, an interstice that is overlooked by its surrounding neighbourhoods.
It is often known colloquially as the “Cally” and forms the entirety of the A5203. The street is mostly residential from Camden Road until Caledonian Road tube station. There are many new residential developments around the station including student accommodation. The street is inbetween the Bemerton estate and Barnsbury Estate which are contrast in life quality.

CRYSTAL WASH INVESTIGATION Eventually, I keep looking an existing laundrette in Caledonian Road, I found it a very interesting communal place where people come, do laundry, talk and interact with each other in many different ways. Hence, I investigated into it to find a appropiate approach for my proposal
Hi, Mrs Mitchelle, Did you have your light breakfast as usual ?
Demos is a nice guy, he always talks to us so we feel like the time passing by quicker
Oh yeah, you know it Demos, one egg, tomatoe and harshbrown...
..................................................... ..................................................... ...................................................
hnm.....hnm..............hnm........ .......................hnm....................
It takes me one hour for normal wash, and one hour and twenty minnutes for wash and dry-cleaning
I really want a coffee machine and a television for the customers
Hey Eman, how is it going with Oscar? You’re having a hard time ?
Stop it Nancy, get on with your laundry
Sorry Maria, I only have enough for mine, but I am sure you can ask Demos, and pay him back next time
Mrs Kelly, have you got twenty pence I forgot to get change for the laundry

TA MANH CUONG THE HISTORY OF LAUNDRY
Omar is a young and passionate Pakistani The two young man turned it into a profitable business.
Omar and John started to rebuild the laundry shop, and they name it “Powder.
Omar was given a dirty and old laundry shop to begin with his business
The shop wasnt in order, kids were playing around and ruinning the place
My Beautiful Laundrette Omar asked his friend who is John to co-operate and rebuild the laundry shop.
In a seedy corner of London, Omar (Gordon Warnecke), a young Pakistani, is given a run-down laundromat by his uncle (Saeed Jaffrey), who hopes to turn it into a successful business. Soon after, Omar is attacked by a group of racist punks, but defuses the situation when he realizes their leader is his former lover, Johnny (Daniel Day-Lewis). The men resume their relationship and rehabilitate the laundromat together, but various social forces threaten to compromise their success
The shop has amazing design as well as facilities. It has nice sofa in which customers can sit on and wait for there laundry, coin game machine, proper washing machines, telephone......

Due to the steamy condition of the building ( laundry activities and natural drying system ), the building mainly is made of concrete ( walls, floors ) and steel frame to avoid rottening, decaying ( wooden structure ). Plus, concrete is perfect for sound proof since the noise of washing machines and activities. Hence, the building will not affect the neighbour as well as customers

The building itself is lack of natural light source because it is inbetween 2 existing buildings. Since it is a 24 hours laundrette, artificial light is essential .

The programme itself bring lots of heat to the building. However, the form of the building is symetrical and the big area of void space in the middle that make the building cool it down by the natural wind.
