PROJECT GUIDANCE Point out that life underground and subterranean societies are often used as features in fantasy, science fiction and speculative fiction. Explain that learners can focus their research for this project on these fictional genres.

Prepare learners for the project by reading out and explaining aspects of the task as described in the Learner’s Book. Emphasise they will be presenting extracts from their chosen texts that are particularly interesting, so they should focus on identifying sections containing vivid language and description, strong imagery or original and engaging concepts and ideas. Organise learners into teams and explain they will prepare their presentation by breaking the project down into smaller tasks that will be allocated to specific group members. They should use the schedule below, or one similar:

Give learners a schedule for delivering the presentation, working backwards from a completion deadline, including: • • •
a date for giving the final presentation in class a date for creating the finished presentation a date by which they should have allocated all the smaller tasks a date by which their initial research should have finished.

Have an initial planning meeting with your team. Use the internet and library to research writing that includes subterranean settings or describes characters living underground. Meet as a group to share research and agree what will be included in the final presentation.

Meet as a group to divide the project into smaller tasks and allocate these to individual group members. Some of the smaller tasks could be: • deciding the format for the presentation (a talk, readings of some or all of the selected extracts, using drawings or images, using presentation software, etc.) • planning who will talk and writing a script or notes for what they will say including: who will introduce or read each extract; who will explain the appeal these extracts have for readers. Give the final presentation to the class.
