Penpals for Handwriting – Second Edition Gill Budgell and Kate Ruttle Supported by

Penpals for Handwriting is our handwriting scheme for 3 to11 year olds. Learning from quirky characters that teach them about the different letter shapes, children progress through five stages to develop a fast, fluent handwriting style. The series is ideal for whole-class teaching with digital resources that provide interactive content, such as animations of patterns, letters and joins.

Developing fine motor skills: Messy play

Early Learning Goal links:

Checklist:

Physical development: moving and handling; Expressive arts and design: exploring and using media and materials, being imaginative. Plus: Personal, social and emotional development: self-confidence and self-awareness.

• Match resources to skills development. • Select and adapt resources to build on children’s interests. • Make sure you have an exciting range of materials and resources available. • Ensure dough (or similar) is freshly made and hygienic to use. • Ensure equipment is clean. • Make sure provision is available in both inside and outside settings. • Check for food allergies if using food stuffs.

Key vocabulary: ‘mix’, ‘squish’, ‘squeeze’, ‘thump’, ‘bash’

Ten ideas for developing handwriting through messy play Resource

Description

Benefit

1 Dough

• Thick and sticky or thin and watery

• Model, create or cook. This is a good exercise for fingers and to strengthen hand muscles. Work from the shoulder and elbow for larger movements and from the hands and fingers for smaller movements. • Basic dough still has a valuable part to play, but try adding textures or aromas for added interest.

2 Water

• Coloured, bubbly, glittery

• Pour, mix, stir, splash or squirt paint with hands or equipment. • Use equipment to explore, e.g. squirting bottles, pipettes, sieves. • Paint with water outside on walls, fences, playgrounds.

3 Mud

• Thick and sticky or thin and watery

• Try fishing things out of different materials, e.g. stars in dough, bugs in mud, plastic animals in jelly, or pressing things in to create imprints. • Fill moulds. • Smear, spread, print and build by sticking materials together. • Mould if solidity allows. This is a good exercise for the hands, arms, wrists and shoulders.

Creative Mark-making 4 Clay

5 Paint 6 Glue

Teacher’s Book

7 Sand

• Solid and hard or soft and powdery

8 Foodstuff: jelly andmarshmallow, sauces and cereals, cornflour gloop

• Solid and slimy jelly or soft, sticky and stretchy marshmallows – add oil or washing up liquid or liquid soap to make material slimy • Slimy, pungent in smell and colour – use food colouring • Cornflour gloop has to be squeezed hard with tense muscles and then relaxed muscles to let the gloop melt

F1

• • • • •

Create 3D structures using straws (bendy or straight). Create towers by balancing one on top of the other. Squelch through fingers. Stretch the jelly and marshmallows apart. Smear, spread, print. This is a good exercise for the hands, arms, wrists and shoulders.

By Gill Budgell & Kate Ruttle

Make your lesson planning pain free with clear and easy-to-use teacher’s books: • Full planning for whole-class sessions showing links to interactives, practice books and workbooks • Scope and sequence charts • Annotated copies of practice book pages

Interactive digital resources: • Lesson warm-ups and physical activities develop and perfect gross and fine motor skills • Letter formation and key join animations teach children perfect handwriting technique • Video guidance on correct posture and pencil grip for right and left-handed pupils

Colourful practice books: • Ideal for smaller groups • Activities include a grammar, spelling or punctuation focus for additional practice of these key skills

Handwriting intervention books: • Help you identify handwriting skills gaps and assist those children who need further support and practice • Revisit key learning from each term and provide opportunities to practise and revise • Include a series of baseline assessments for each year group with clear guidance and signposting on what to do next

Practical, write-in workbooks: • Provide opportunities to practise pattern, letter and join formations • Highlight common exception/high-frequency words • Reinforce work on phonics

3 Holds pencil between thumb and two fingers: no longer using whole-hand grasp. • Around 3–4 years. • Both of these grips are the crude beginnings of the tripod grip. The hand tends to move as a unit, with limited wrist movement.

Class Packs Six copies of each title within a band, ideal for guided reading. The books are provided in a pullout box for easy storage.

The series is available as individual titles or in a range of packs.

Band Packs One copy of each title within your chosen band, giving children the choice from a wide range of fiction and non-fiction.

• The series uses book bands from the experts at IOE, who have checked and approved each title to make sure content is appropriate for its stage • Children progress from simple words at Pink A band to books with over 1,000 words at White band • Benchmark titles in each band help you assess each child’s reading level

Teaching Packs The complete series with all 90 titles split across two boxes. Choose from Early (Pink A to Blue Band) or Transitional (Green to White Band). These packs come with the relevant teacher’s resource guides and are supplied in a double-drawer pull-out box for easy storage. Next Steps

entry.get() applies the get() function to the entry widget. This collects whatever text has been typed in to this text entry box and assigns it to the entered_text variable.

Next we clear the text box widget called output with this widget’s delete() method. This takes two arguments. The 0.0 says start deleting from line 0 (i.e. before line 1) and before character 0 (i.e. the beginning). END is a constant that always refers to the position after the last character in the text box. We could also have replaced END with a line.character index but END is easier.

Delving Deeper

Did you know that the glossary contains all the key words from this book and Python Basics?

The indexes referred to in the delete() method work like coordinates but actually indicate where the cursor goes when selecting text. The rows or lines count from 0, before the first line, then 1 is the first line, 2 is the next etc. The character index (or column index) counts from 0, before the first character, then 1 after it, 2 next etc. Don’t forget a space is a character. For example, my_string = "text| widget box" the cursor is at index position (1.4).

The next line of code finds the definition in the dictionary using the entered text as the key. Finally, this is added to the text box widget called output using the widget’s insert() method. This takes two arguments: 1 where to start the insertion: (END) i.e. the beginning (we have just cleared output) 2 what to insert: the definition found in the dictionary in the previous line.

The num_pad_list could all have been typed out on one line. See how much easier it is to read by adding line breaks. Line returns in lists, dictionaries and tuples are ignored by the computer.

Try running the code as supplied and then alter the code so that the column counter counts up until it is greater than 3 and see what happens. Keep altering the values of c and r until you have a good feel for how this loop builds the number pad.

Analysis of Code Box 2.8

Debugging The code for each button should all make sense to you now. The problem here is: why doesn’t this code work as expected? Working out why code does not work as expected is called debugging. There are two clues: Clue 1: Nothing happens when we press the buttons. Clue 2: The output when the app is first run is 7894561230.=

Quick Quiz 3.2 What do you notice about this output? 1 It is just random numbers and symbols? 2 The numbers and symbols are in the reverse order of the num_pad_list. 3 The numbers and symbols are in the same order as the num_pad_list. The first clue tells us that the command option that links to our click() function does not work when we press the buttons. The second clue tells us that the function was called every
