PRIMARY/ELEMENTARY (PRE-K TO 5TH GRADE) ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Cambridge Global English Stages 1–6 Cambridge Global English is an eight-stage, language-rich English course which can be used as a standalone English as a Second Language (ESL) curriculum or as part of an innovative suite of materials created by Cambridge University Press for young learners at international primary and secondary schools. Our Cambridge Global English Primary materials (Stages 1–6) follow the Cambridge Primary ESL curriculum framework and lead into lower secondary ESL materials (Cambridge Global English 7–9).* To meet future challenges children need to develop both conversational and academic English. From the earliest level, Cambridge Global English addresses both these competencies. Emphasis is placed on developing the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills learners will need to be successful in life, and when using authentic English language classroom materials in other subjects. *Cambridge Global English titles have not gone through the Cambridge endorsement process as they follow the curriculum frameworks developed by Cambridge English Language Assessment.

Learner’s Books The Learner’s Book with audio CD provides the core input of the course and consists of nine thematic units of study. Each unit contains six lessons developed around a unifying theme. The materials feature skills-building tasks for listening, reading, writing and speaking, as well as language focuses. The course aims to provide a variety of factual, fictional, dialogue and poetry texts covering a range of topics. The audio CD includes all the listening material needed for the Learner’s Book and Activity Book. PRIMARY/ELEMENTARY (PRE-K TO 5TH GRADE) MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE (ADDITIONAL)

Cambridge Primary Mathematics and Cambridge Primary Science Supplementary Activity Books There are 15 brand-new additions which build on the ethos of the highly successful Cambridge Primary Maths and Cambridge Primary Science series. • Three Mathematics Starters Activity Books per subject for the Early Years/Key Stage 1 transition to help children prepare and acquire the skills they will need as they start Mathematics at primary school. • Six Skills Builder Activity Books per subject for grades 1 to 6, which provide extra support and teaching for children tackling difficult Mathematics concepts. • Six Mathematics Challenge Activity Books per subject for grades 1 to 6, which are designed to stretch high-ability learners and deepen their understanding of key Maths concepts. • Six Science Skills Builder Activity Books for grades 1 to 6, which are designed to give further practice for key aspects of scientific practice, with a focus on Science comprehension and literacy. • Six Science Challenge Activity Books for grades 1 to 6, which include activities designed to stretch high-ability learners and engrain key scientific behaviour. • The books are designed for ESL students, with carefully selected and straightforward language. These Activity Books fit perfectly into the existing series. The Starters provide ‘entry-level’ teaching for children just starting their Maths education.

We are working with Cambridge International Examinations towards endorsement of the Skills Builder and Challenge Activity Books. Teaching hints and reminders are provided, so children can learn key points before tackling each set of activities.

The Challenge and Skills Builder Activity Books provide a considerable range of differentiated activities to ensure effective teaching and learning for all children at both ends of the ability scale. They also work as stand-alone activity books, providing opportunities for both home and school learning of key Maths and Science concepts. 1A Number and Problem Solving Remember:

The UCL Institute of Education’s International Literacy Centre (ILC) promotes literacy education from age 3 to 13 (Early Years Foundation Stage to Key Stage 3). The ILC has successfully trained many hundreds of teachers to provide effective literacy teaching through a range of interventions and classroom approaches. As well as providing high-quality professional support for teachers and teacher educators, the ILC develops materials and approaches to support teachers of literacy. One of these is Book Banding for guided reading, the definitive system for banding of books to support early Primary reading. Most recently, Book Banding was published in Which Book and Why? Using Book Bands and book levels for guided reading in Key Stage 1 (Bodman and Franklin, 2014). Sue Bodman and Glen Franklin, National Leaders for the ILC, are the Series Editors of Cambridge Reading Adventures.

Blue band stories are a little more complex, often with several characters and episodes within one story to support the development of comprehension skills. The greater variation in sentence patterns supports meaning and helps the children to cross-check and self-correct independently. Non-fiction texts become more varied in content and subject, and the choice of vocabulary becomes more technically specific. Less commonly used words are well supported by illustrations, giving good opportunities to build word-reading power and knowledge of spelling patterns in English.

The 9 Yellow band readers develop longer story plots to support developing inferential skills. Texts include longer sentences, a greater range of sentence structures and a wider range of vocabulary. Illustrations begin to offer less direct support since the word reading skills of the young reader facilitate accurate decoding of simple phonically regular words. Repetition is now used as a dramatic device rather than a support for building high frequency vocabulary knowledge. Non-fiction texts relate to young children’s interests and experiences, with a range of genre, text layouts and devices to support meaning.

In fiction texts at Green band, the longer sentence structures make the use of punctuation a focus in order to get the precise message. Stories usually have several characters and story events are more developed, often lasting several pages. The inclusion of longer more complex words requires pupils to apply word-solving skills flexibly. Across Green band, readers can experience a wider range of non-fiction genre than at previous bands. Whilst topic-specific vocabulary is used, there is moderate support from the illustrations and novel words are often repeated. F F F F N N N N

In fiction texts at Orange band, illustrations offer support for just one aspect of the story meaning for that page. More space is given over to text on a page. A high percentage of high frequency words are now established, fluent reading and developing understanding. At non-fiction, ways of presenting information are expanded to include simple tables and charts. Wider range of genre includes explanatory texts and mixed genre.

Giorgio Bacchin

At Purple band, story-lines often reflect character and/or author viewpoint. This results in more rounded characters, offering opportunities to discuss character motivation and response. Story language is developed at Purple band, with many occurrences of the turns of phrase of traditional tales and story-telling: ‘Long, long ago,’ ‘Once upon a time’, for example. There are some simple chapter books at this band. Non-fiction texts offer more in-depth information and more technical vocabulary than at previous bands. F F F F N N N

Readers at Gold band are nearly ready for ‘conventional’ reading. Texts are now longer to match the growing ‘reading stamina’ of the young reader. Chapter books build tension, giving the opportunity for more sustained reading and more complex storylines. Texts are illustrated, but now offer general support for the story line. Language structures become more complex, with two and three clause sentences appearing occasionally. Readers are now familiar with the layout and features of non-fiction texts, giving teachers opportunity to ensure children can hunt and locate information and answer questions posed.

The Great

Migration

At White band, texts match children’s growing maturity as readers. Stories showing strong cause and effect provide opportunities to explore ‘why’ when responding to texts. Sentences of several clauses show a wide range of conjunctions. Potentially tricky elisions like ‘we’re’ and ‘they’re’ are used at White band, requiring fast efficient use of print information. Non-fiction topics are broader, focusing on a particular aspect. They may employ different genre styles across one text, and a range of non-fiction text features. F F F N N N N

What is the Great Migration? There is a place in Tanzania, in Africa, which is so big that people call it the Serengeti. This means ‘the land that goes on for ever’. More than two million animals live here.

The Great Migration is when all these animals go on the move. It is the largest migration of land animals on Earth and it happens every year.

Cambridge Secondary 1 (Checkpoint) Cambridge Secondary 1 is a flexible curriculum with integrated assessment from Cambridge International Examinations. Cambridge Secondary 1 provides a seamless progression from Cambridge Primary – or can be used as a standalone curriculum – to develop learners’ skills and confidence in English, Mathematics and Science. It offers a curriculum framework for educational success for learners (typically 11–14 years old), with an optional testing structure. It also helps prepare in the lead up to studying at Cambridge IGCSE® level.

Secondary 1 Checkpoint tests enable feedback to be provided on a learner’s strengths and weaknesses in key curriculum areas. Feedback of this kind is an invaluable source of information.

Cambridge Secondary 1 Checkpoint tests are for use at the end of Cambridge Secondary 1. They are marked by Cambridge International Examinations and provide schools with an external international benchmark for student performance. Cambridge

Cambridge Secondary 1 Checkpoint tests are available in English, Mathematics and Science and can be offered at two sessions during the year. The tests cover all major areas of learning required in the first years of an international secondary education.

CAMBRIDGE ELEVATE ENHANCED EDITIONS COMING 2016

Learners taking the test receive a Statement of Achievement which gives an indication of their academic progress during this education stage.

Cambridge Checkpoint Mathematics Greg Byrd, Lynn Byrd and Chris Pearce • This brightly illustrated course offers a comprehensive introduction to all topics covered in the curriculum framework. Worked examples show students how to tackle different problems, and there are plenty of exercise questions to help students to prepare for the different types they will face in examination. • The Practice Book contains further exercise questions for practice in the classroom or at home. • The Teacher’s Resource CD-ROM offers advice on how to introduce concepts in the classroom, and provides ideas for activities to help engage students with the subject matter. Answers to all questions in the Coursebook and Practice Book are also included.

SELF-ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS 1.04.02

Three Gorges Dam, Yangtze River, China The largest hydroelectric power generating dam in the world is located at Three Gorges on the Yangtze River (see Image 1.11). It was completed in 2009 and has been estimated to produce almost an eighth of China’s energy needs. The EIA carried out before construction began considered the following factors:

• •

ecosystem destruction population relocation and the social consequences effect of sedimentation behind the dam due to reduction in river flow potential for landslides due to increased pressure on the land possibility of earthquakes.

for the construction of the dam and to provide homes and farms for people who were displaced. A further impact identified was the increased risk of landslides due to the steep sides of the river, which were already unstable. The risk of landslide was made worse by deforestation.

The enormous dam stands over 1 km wide and 200 m high. It is a physical barrier which disrupts the river ecosystem and fragments the habitats it contains. The EIA report identified 47 endangered species in the area, including the Chinese river dolphin and the Chinese sturgeon. Since the dam was built, the river dolphin has been declared officially extinct and fewer than 1000 sturgeon are thought to remain. The EIA report identified and considered the impact that the dam would have on spawning of sturgeon and other fish and balanced it against other potential benefits. The report also highlighted social consequences. The dam flooded 100 000 acres of fertile agricultural land as well as 1600 factories and mines, 13 cities, 140 towns and 1352 villages, and almost 2 million people were forced to leave their homes and livelihoods along the river.

Increased chances of earthquakes due to the huge mass of water held by the dam, which put pressure on the rock below, were studied. And in addition, the problem of silt accumulation behind the dam and its potential to block the sluices of the dam was considered, along with water quality downstream, where effluent flow to the sea and deposition of silt are both reduced. The dam’s contribution to flood control was also investigated. The reservoir’s storage capacity would lessen the frequency of severe floods downstream from once every ten years to once every 100 years. But on the other hand, the dam could not prevent floods on downstream tributaries.

Another major environmental impact identified was deforestation. Large areas of forest had to be cleared both

The dam has been operating since 2009, and as well as the extinction of the Chinese river dolphin other environmental impacts have resulted from it. Research some of these and try to assess the value of the EIA that was made.

2

Summarise the environmental costs and social benefits of the Three Gorges Dam project. Evaluate the overall usefulness of the EIA

3

Using this example, highlight and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of EIAs.

What is meant by ‘Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)’, and what is the purpose of the assessment?

2

Suggest why EIAs may not be able to predict all the outcomes of a new project. Give an example of a factor that was not predicted in the Three Gorges Dam assessment. Discussion point: To what extent should environmental concerns limit development projects?

1.04.04 Ecological footprint The ecological footprint is a sustainability indicator that expresses the relationship between a population and the natural environment. It considers the total use of natural resources by a country’s population. The concept of ecological footprints has been used to measure our consumption of natural resources, how it varies from country to country, and how it has changed over time. The ecological footprint for a country is calculated by examining the cropland, grazing land, forest and fishing grounds needed to produce the food, fibre and timber the country consumes and to absorb the wastes it produces as it uses energy, and to provide space for homes, roads and factories. Six components are used to calculate a country’s ecological footprint. You can study the details of these aspects in Topic 8.4: • • • • •

Some factors that could not be measured are those that affected lifestyles and scenery which people have traditionally enjoyed. The Chinese government took the view that people would be better off being resettled in new homes. Nevertheless, a major problem has been the lack of land: many farmers are now without land to cultivate and have been forced to adapt to new ways of life and new forms of employment. In the past, the banks of the Yangtze River were lined by spectacular cliffs and mountains which have been lost. Coffins used to hang in caves high up on the mountain cliffs, and there were ancient writings on the cave walls. Most of these have been submerged under the dam reservoir, and little was done to protect or preserve cultural relics in the area. 1

1

3

As a result of the EIA, the decision makers concluded that the social and environmental benefits of the dam outweighed the negative impacts of the project. The energy produced by the dam does not release greenhouses gases, so air quality will improve with the increased use of electrical power. The planners also considered the positive benefits of reduced seasonal flooding and increasing economic development along the banks of the reservoir and river.

Image 1.11 Building the Three Gorges Dam created a reservoir behind the dam almost 350 km long. Millions of people living by the Yangtze have been affected by its construction.

Built-up land: the land area taken up by infrastructure, including housing, transportation and industrial sites. Fishing grounds: the estimated primary production needed to support the fish and seafood caught (see Image 1.12). Forest: the total amount of lumber, pulp, timber products and fuel wood consumed. Grazing land: the area used to raise livestock. Cropland: the area used to produce food and fibre for human consumption, feed for livestock, oil crops and rubber (see Image 1.13). Carbon uptake: the amount of forest land required to absorb carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels, land-use change and chemical processes, other than the portion absorbed by oceans.

Image 1.12 Fish being sold in Peru – the fishing grounds’ footprint is one of the six components of the ecological footprint.

An ecological footprint is the area of land and water needed to sustainably provide all the resources at the rate at which they are consumed by a given population.

CONSIDER THIS The idea of an ecological footprint was conceived in 1990 by Wackernagel and Rees at the University of British Columbia.
