Nursing & Health Sciences The Campbell University Board of Trustees’ Executive Committee approved the establishment and naming of the university’s eighth school at their March 25, 2015 meeting. The Catherine W. Wood School of Nursing is named for Catherine W. Wood, who has spent many years working as a staff nurse in orthopedics and neurology at Gaston Memorial Hospital. She is married to Luby Wood, a member of Campbell University’s Foundation Board of Trustees. The School of Nursing falls under the College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. A ground-breaking ceremony was held for the Tracey F. Smith Hall of Nursing & Health Sciences which will house the nursing and physical therapy programs. The 72,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility is located adjacent to the Leon Levine Hall of Medical Sciences on the Health Science campus off U.S. 421, in Lillington, less than a mile west of the university’s main campus. Construction on the $22 million Smith Hall is expected to be completed by the spring of 2016 and will eventually house 320 students. The facility is named in honor of Tracey F. Smith of Farmville, North Carolina. After pursuing a career in nursing, Smith served as the director of marketing at Carolina Medical Products. She is the wife of Henry Smith, who was the founding owner and president of Carolina Medical Products. Henry graduated Campbell in 1967 and is a member of the Campbell University Board of Trustees and the CPHS Dean’s Board of Advisors.

Baggett Wellness Institute The Baggett Wellness Institute Grant Program awarded two grants for up to $5,000 to promote activities or initiatives for the advancement of health education, wellness, and prevention by the Campbell University faculty. One grant was for the development of a free clinic operated by CU health profession students in an interprofessional setting. The other grant was awarded for the creation of a smoking cessation program. In addition to grant funding, the Institute welcomed internationally renowned surgeon, Josef Stutz, in September. Stutz lectured on lipedema, a chronic disorder of adipose tissue and lymphatic dysfunction at a continuing education event held on the Health Science campus.

Give Harnett Kids a Smile Students from the Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences’ PA and Public Health programs teamed up in February to offer Give Kids a Smile, a free dental clinic for Harnett County children who do not have dental insurance. The two programs, along with volunteers from the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine and the Harnett County Department of Health, worked alongside each other to provide free dental examinations, cleanings, sealants, fluoride treatments, general health screenings, and information sessions on the importance of oral hygiene. Throughout the day-long event, students and volunteers were able to provide dental check-ups, cleanings, and sealants to 50 children.

Dr. Ronald W. Maddox, founding dean, retires

2015 M. Keith Fearing, Jr. Award

Ronald W. Maddox, PharmD, retired as Dean of the College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences and Vice President for Health Programs of Campbell University on December 31, 2014. Arriving in Buies Creek in 1985 as a consultant, Maddox quickly identified the potential success a pharmacy program would be for Campbell. Maddox oversaw the development of an innovative entry-level PharmD program, which ultimately inspired undergraduate and graduate degrees in clinical research and pharmaceutical sciences, a graduate degree in public health, and professional programs in physical therapy, physician assistant, and nursing. Maddox handed over the keys to the Dean’s Suite to Campbell alumnus, Michael L. Adams, PharmD ’96, PhD, on January 1, 2015.

Mutual Wholesale Drug Company Chief Executive Officer David S. Moody, Jr., received the 2015 M. Keith Fearing, Jr., Community Pharmacy Practice Award from Campbell University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences. Moody began his pharmacy career at Crabtree Pharmacy as a retail pharmacist and later as the pharmacist and owner of the drugstore. He began his tenure at Mutual Drug in 1988 by developing an innovative generics program (C.A.P.S.) to provide drugs to both the independent pharmacy and their customers at a reasonable cost. Moody earned his bachelor of science in Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, completed the University of Southern California’s Management Development Program in Healthcare and Purdue University’s Executive Development Program. He received an honorary doctor of pharmacy degree from Campbell in 2010. He is a member of the Dean’s Board of Advisors.

PA transitions to a 24 month curriculum The Physician Assistant Program revised its program from a 28-month to a 24-month curriculum which was affirmed by Campbell’s Curriculum Council on October 24, 2014. The revised curriculum went into effect with the matriculation of the PA Class of 2017, which began classes in July. The didactic phase of the program remains 12 months, but the clinical phase of the program has been shortened from 15 months to 12 months. This was accomplished by decreasing clinical rotations from five weeks to four weeks and eliminating the required orthopedic rotation. Students will still have the option to select two electives, including an elective orthopedic rotation.

Community Pharmacy Institute The College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences has established the Community Pharmacy Institute (CPI). The CPI will form the basis for the College’s continued support of community pharmacy practice in North Carolina and will augment existing educational opportunities for current students while improving community-based pharmacy care for patients. The Institute will provide continuing education programming, annual scholarships to CPHS pharmacy students, community pharmacy consulting workshops, and consultingbased services to area pharmacists and pharmacies. The CPI will be distributing a survey to North Carolina pharmacists to gather information on what services and educational programming will be most beneficial in the near future.

ALUMNI CPHS Alumni Association currently has over 450 members, which is consistent with previous years. The association’s board of directors is currently evaluating the membership model and identifying new ways to attract and retain members. The board of directors is comprised of 21 alumni, representing all programs with CPHS graduates.

Updated Website One of the biggest accomplishments this year was the complete redesign of the www.cphsalumni.campbell.edu website. It is now more aesthetically pleasing, user friendly, and mobile ready.

Events & Activities The Association’s main purpose is to engage alumni and generate excitement and affinity for CPHS. Through the annual golf classic, continuing education seminars, homecoming tailgate, regional visits, and the return of alumni weekend, the Association has provided opportunities for alumni to participate, network and enjoy their Campbell family. During the 2014-2015 year, the Association sponsored 22 events that engaged alumni, students, donors, and friends.

Thirty current members of the PharmD Class of 2015 matched with a PGY-1 residency or fellowship and six alumni matched with a PGY-2 residency. Campbell surpassed the national average of 65% by eight percentage points.

CPHS Mission Trips Two groups from CPHS traveled internationally in the last academic year. Colonel William Pickard, chair of Clinical Research, joined a medical team from the Jerry M. Wallace School of Osteopathic Medicine on a mission trip to Honduras over spring break. Public Health chair, David Tillman, and six of his students, traveled to Haiti in May to build capacity and implement electronic medical records within the medical clinics of Zorange.

PA students excel in simulated emergency incident The Physician Assistant Program, in collaboration with other university departments and area volunteers, demonstrated a simulated mass casualty incident on Saturday, June 20. The exercise was a student-driven component of the Emergency Medicine course in the program’s curriculum. Additionally, the exercise was developed as an interprofessional event, involving students from Campbell’s medical school as well as the departments of physical therapy, pharmacy, and public health. Local and regional agencies provided extensive logistical and technical support and personnel. The goal of this exercise was to allow students to practice their emergency medicine skills in a realistic setting. Students were expected to work as team members with other emergency personnel to triage, transport, and treat simulated patients in a variety of emergency management settings.
