What you need to know

AQA A/AS Level History. What you need to

Our table below details the key changes for the new AQA A/AS Level History qualifications for first learning of these qualifications.

Key curriculum changes Fully linear course Exams will only take place at the end of two years of study.

New Assessment Objectives include:

Exam structure

AO1 - Making substantiated judgements

• A O2 - Analyse and evaluate source

material • A O3 - Analyse and evaluate historical

interpretation

AS Levels and A Levels are now separate qualifications

Implications for history teachers and students Preparing students for a linear course with terminal exams requires a different approach to a modular exam, so teachers will need to reconsider the way that they approach A Level History. In the past teachers and students may have used the modular examinations to track progress through the course and predict final grades. A linear exam presents a greater revision challenge than a modular approach. Students are required to remember a much greater volume of information for the exam and there is a greater expectation of linking between topics.

AS Level and A Level qualifications must remain co-teachable.

AS Level History and A Level History are now separate qualifications, and AS marks do not count towards the final A Level grade.

Content changes

AS Level qualifications are 100% examination with no controlled assessment, an Historical Enquiry is retained at A Level (max 20%), based on an independently researched topic.

200-year period of study AS Level History and A Level History must cover a chronological range of at least 200 years.
