GCSE English Language: Writing workshops

You are going to prepare a presentation to the marketing department of a company that manufactures sports gear, so that they will choose your idea for an advertisement. This is called a pitch.

Use this example for help or prompts if you need to: Make an opening statement (this should clearly and quickly say what you are trying to do):

Reading 1 Read the brief (Source A) that the company

has sent you. This outlines what they need from the new marketing campaign.

Discussing and presenting 2 Work in groups of three or four:

a Discuss ideas that you could suggest to Lightnin’ during the spoken pitch. Make sure you have strong ideas for all three of the areas they have identified in the brief. You should work out: why your ideas will work; language choices such as slogans and key words; music choice; which social media and how you will use them, and so on. b Decide who is going to present each section in a live pitch.

Today’s trainer market is a crowded place. Lightnin’ Shoes are fighting for recognition against many high-profile brands. Our campaign will give you a niche that sets you apart from the competition. Develop your points: Generic icons

4 You have heard a lot of different ideas

for how to improve the sales of Lightnin’ trainers. Now you are going to write your own response to the brief to send to Lightnin’ Shoes UK. You can choose any ideas from any of the group presentations. The important thing is to make your writing powerful and persuasive. Above all, you must make it clear to the marketing executive exactly what you are proposing. 38
