Whether they realize it or not, each one of those fans will be part of the most memorable event in the history of Canadian curling. The victors - one team each for the men and women – will have conquered the toughest field to ever compete on the pebbled surface. And as winners of the 2009 Canadian Men’s and Women’s Curling Trials, they’ll move on to Vancouver in 2010 to represent our country in the biggest sporting event in the world. While the drama and excitement comes to its closing crescendo for the championship finals, the entire week will be packed with strategy, tension and a calibre of shot making rarely seen by fans of the roaring game. From the opening draw on the afternoon of December 6th through to the Sunday finals, Canada’s finest men’s and women’ curlers will be putting on a display of skills that has to be seen to be believed. By the way, the first draw is Boston Pizza Family Day – with a limited number of tickets available for $15 so you can give the kids a chance to experience championship curling. Get in the spirit from the opening draw. Fans are encouraged to wear their Red and White’s – and show the rest of the country that Edmonton is home of Canada’s most colourful curling fans! Along with all the action on the ice, there’s more still in Keith’s Patch – the legendary party place for Season of Champions events. Bringing it all home to you! The dawn of an exciting new Season of Champions brings with it the introduction of a bold new move designed to bring curling fans closer to the curlers and the events. It’s Season of Champions TV - one of the most innovative developments in the communication of the sport to the hundreds of thousands of fans across the country who follow every event… every game… and virtually every shot. Season of Champions TV is featuring Internet broadcasts that take you right to the heart of championship curling. It was launched in October with a live webcast interview session with the initial qualifiers for the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings. And that was just the beginning! The next phase of coverage comes to you direct from the Roar, encompassing a range of features that take you behind-the-scenes at the biggest event in Canadian curling history. We’ll be talking to the competitors, fans and volunteers – capturing all the drama and excitement of the Canadian Curling Trials. Along with a taste of the party action at Keith’s Patch. But Season of Champions TV won’t stop when the Men’s and Women’s champions are declared in Edmonton’s Rexall Place, December 13th. The cameras will keep rolling throughout the Season of Champions, providing you with a unique perspective of the people and activities that make Canada’s major curling events such a special experience. Rivals. Since the beginning of time, athletes have challenged opponents with passion and pride as they strive to achieve their best. The more times they compete, the higher the stakes become. Classic rivalries have emerged over the years in virtually any sport ever played. In Alberta we’ve been captivated by the Eskimos and Stampeders as they clashed on the gridiron. In the NHL the Oilers and Flames have battled on the ice. But when it comes to Alberta rivalries, the one that stands out above all the rest is in curling. Soon it will be played out again in Edmonton’s Rexall Place at the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings - the Canadian Curling Trials. In front of likely the largest crowds in Canadian curling history. Kevin Martin and Randy Ferbey represent two of the fiercest rivals ever in the history of the sport – not only in their home province but right across the country. Any time they step on the same sheet of ice, it’s a match-up that captures the attention and imagination of fans. When the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings takes to the ice in Edmonton’s Rexall Place they’ll stand face to face with the ultimate prize in Canadian curling on the line – the right to wear the Maple Leaf in Vancouver with the entire world watching. Martin and Ferbey share much in common. Both hail from Edmonton – even playing together briefly in the mid-90s. Both have won more than their share of provincial, national, international and World Curling Tour titles. And both come to the Roar of the Rings with a burning drive to compete for gold in 2010 and a clear understanding of the significance of the event. “I really do believe the Trials are going to be the biggest event ever,” Martin has predicted. “Being held in Rexall Place and the Edmonton teams involved… it’s the perfect makeup for a great event.” 4
“One of us is older...” “...And one of us is smarter.” Ferbey also understands the sense of excitement building around the upcoming showdown to determine Canada’s men’s and women’s representatives in Vancouver for 2010 in the biggest sports event of all. “Just qualifying for the Trials, you have people coming up and saying ‘you can win, you can win….I’m going to be watching you’… there’s a lot of pressure.” As for the much-publicized feud both have come to put it in perspective. “When you have two teams like that in the game it makes for a good rivalry,” Martin has stated. “That’s what we have going and it’s probably helped both our teams over the past years because of it.” “Our rivalry has gotten a little less intense,” says Ferbey. “Is it still important for us to beat Kevin Martin? Of course… but I think we’ve both matured to the point where curling’s not the end of the world.” Whether this season marks the end of the competitive road for two of the most prominent warriors in the history of the roaring game, neither is prepared to answer that yet. Should age be a factor, Martin notes, “one of us is older than the other.” Ferbey’s response? “And one of us is smarter than the other.” Is Martin vs Ferbey one of the great rivalries in sport? Yes, according to Kevin Koe – a fellow Edmontonian joining them in the Roar of the Rings. “I think they get along a little better than they used to, but it’s great for the sport. The curling world has embraced Internet technology – and nowhere is that more evident than this year’s Season of Champions. It all began with the introduction of the curling.ca website, providing curling fans access to a new source of information on everything relating to developments in the sport. The next move was the launch of seasonofchampions.ca – a dedicated site featuring every championship throughout the season. Now fans can go online for up-to-date event news, ticket information – and they can actually purchase tickets with a click of a button. This year the sport’s Internet presence is expanding further with the development of Season of Champions TV and AtThePatch.ca.
Season of Champions TV debuted October 7th with a live webcast from Edmonton featuring seven of the first eight qualifiers for the Roar of the Rings. The full rebroadcast is available now at seasonofchampions.ca. Season of Champions TV will be on the scene during the championship season – starting with the Roar in December. AtThePatch.ca is a dedicated site providing online visitors with a taste of the Keith’s Patch experience, along with up-dates on the entertainment lineups scheduled for each event.

up close and personal In most sports fans cheer from the stands, watch on television or track scores online. Opportunities to meet the athletes, or even see them up close, are extremely rare. Well, curling isn’t most sports! In our game it’s personal. Competitors and fans share a unique relationship. There’s no special pass to get near the stars – a ticket to the 2009 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings is all you need. What makes curling so different? “I think fans can relate to curlers because we are everyday people,” says Jennifer Jones, one of eight women’s qualifiers for the Canadian Curling Trials. “We have families, we have kids, we have careers and we curl because we love it and have a passion for it.” It’s a classic case of mutual admiration. “We feel like they’re friends,” adds Jones. “They feel like they’re part of our lives and they get to understand what we’re thinking on the ice… that’s unique to curling and what I think sets us apart from other sports.” You can share a more personal side of the Roar of the Rings competitors, past champions and other luminaries of the game at the Up Close and Personal interview sessions in the Oh Canada Lounge. Training for the Trials Once considered a leisurely game, curling has undergone a dramatic transition. With so much more at stake – including a shot at a gold medal in 2010 in Vancouver – today’s curlers are taking a much more serious approach to all aspects of the game. And that includes practice and training. Preparation for the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings requires countless hours of on-ice practice, as the athletes hone their games to the point where the critical shots are second nature. On the women’s side four of the qualifiers for the Canadian Curling Trials recently discussed their practice regimens. Jennifer Jones, Shannon Kleibrink, Cheryl Bernard and Stefanie Lawton agree that it requires a daily average of at least an hour of on-ice practice. And that’s on top of a full competitive schedule. The physical aspects of the game have also become much more pronounced leading to more strenuous training regimens. “It’s a unique sport where the skip and third are chess players… kind of the math kids,” comments Kevin Martin. “And your front end are the brute strength and extreme cardio. When it comes to the front end, the amount of calories you use per hour is incredible! The heart rate going to 180 is one of the fastest of any sport in the world.” “You need a mix of youth and experience,” says Roar qualifier Kevin Koe. “You definitely need those young guys on the sweep… where it can make the difference in three or four shots over a game.”

The Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings offers a unique opportunity to Canada’s curling fans – the chance to see the country’s best men’s and women’s teams sharing the same stage in a pressure-packed environment. It’s really exciting.” Kevin Martin suggests that it offers something for everyone. “Some people prefer women’s curling over men’s… and vice-versa.” “From a fan’s perspective it’s got to be the best ever,” notes Randy Ferbey. “In one venue you see the best curlers in Canada over the past four years competing morning, afternoon and night… for the fans it’s unbelievable.”
